So a lot of my family and friends have been asking me lately,
"What are those image descriptions that you put on your photo?"
"Why do you keep putting image descriptions?"
"What are those image descriptions for?"
And I know a lot of you have been wondering the same.
So I'm going to explain what image descriptions are
and how you can use them.
First thing, image descriptions are an accessibility tool.
They're for many people with different types of disabilities.
For example people who are blind, people with other
vision impairments, people with ADHD.
Color blindness, etc.
Basically anyone who needs help viewing a photo,
or processing what's in a photo,
image descriptions benefit them.
Image descriptions are used by people who have screen readers.
Or any other way that would read written text.
There's many kinds.
But to make it simple, what a screen reader does
is it reads the text that's provided.
But if a photo pops up and it doesn't have any type
of image description, then the photo is useless.
The screen reader can't describe the photo without
that description.
Now there's different ways to provide image descriptions.
One way is putting brackets like this.
And then you add the description of the photo.
Like what I do on Instagram.
Another way is seeing if the social media platform
you're using has an accessibility feature.
Twitter has one for their photos.
To activate it, if you go to the settings and you
scroll to "Accessibility" turn on the use for image descriptions.
Now when you go to post a photo
you'll notice you can add a description.
This doesn't affect the word count for your caption.
Then when you're ready to post
The picture will have the description.
You won't be able to see it, but it's there.
And those who use a screen reader will now have
access to your photo tweets.
Cool right?
Now for my image descriptions, I tend to
stay in the third person.
And I highlight what I view as important in the photo.
My descriptions vary, but I always stay in third person.
A lot of people do their image descriptions in first person.
It's just up to you.
Image descriptions are easy, and very helpful.
They make the internet more accessible for disabled users.
So post your amazing photos and make sure that
everyone has access to view them.
We all want to see that beautiful face of yours.
So add the descriptions!
