Hello everyone! I am Gigi Miu!
In this video series I will teach you how to make music PV using MikuMikuDance (MMD) and other softwares.
As you may know MMD was created to facilitate the production promotional videos for Hatsune Miku and other Vocaloid characters.
The idea of starting a MMD series games from a conversation with someone i met online,
who was asking for advices on how to use MMD,
I think her name should be Fire, if I remember correctly,
so I thought that if this topic could have been helpful for Fire, could have been helpful for other people as well.
I also thought that these video would have complemented well with the lessons I am doing on how to make Vocaloid music.
So, following both courses you can become a well-rounded producer!!
The first lesson is, of course, where to get the required software.
The first one is VPVP, the website of the creator of MikuMikuDance
VPVP stands for Vocaloid Promotion Video Project.
So the name reflects the origin of the software itself, which was made to facilitate producers when creating Vocaloid content,
since at that time there was a huge request for a software like this one.
Ah, forgot to say that you can find the link of this website in the video description.
So, from this website you can download MMD.
There are several version depending if your system is 32 or 64 bit. Pick the one which matches your pc specs.
Unluckily there is no Mac version, and as you know, I have a Mac...
so I will use a software called Parallel Desktop to emulate a Windows inside my Mac.
So, if you have a Mac like me, you could use Parallel Desktop as a workaround.
So, what you will see now it's my emulated Windows.
The fact that it is an emulation may give me some problems, but hopefully everything will go smooth during these lessons...
One of the issues I will have is the inability to install certain programs like MikuMikuMotion,
but hopefully by the time we will get there with the lessons I will hopefully manage to get a fully functional pc.
You are free to make fun of me that I don't have a pc in my home.
Are you making fun of me?
I give you 10 more seconds to make fun of me... it's 2017 and I don't have a pc...
So, after downloading the file from VPVP website unzip it.
One of the benefits of MMD, is that it doesn't require any installation.
Even if the software itself doesn't require any installation
you will need few libraries to make the software run.
Libraries like Direct X or Visual C++. Links for downloading them are in the readme file.
Let me show you where the link are located into the readme file...
ooops... wrong readme file...
that's the correct one!
These links are at the beginning of the read me file.
Since these libraries may be already installed in your pc, just try to start the program first and if it's not starting go download them.
Let me show you how to download them just for the sake of explanation.
All these libraries are downloadable from Microsoft website, so they are perfectly safe to install.
There are 3 libraries that needs to be installed so let me show you them all.
Start with Microdsoft Visual C++
Both versions, 2005 and 2008.
And then let's go to the third library...
...sorry for the wait...
...and the last one is Direct X!
So, double-check if you have these libraries installed, otherwise go download them.
Even if the readme is in japanese, the links are at the very beginning of the file you can't miss them.
You may need to restart your pc after installing these libraries.
Oddly enough, as I was saying earlier, MMD instead doesn't require any installation at all.
So, let's double click the icon and let's start the software.
First of all, let me reset it to it's default state, cause the one you are seeing now it's not its default state.
Please wait few seconds, I am restoring it...
...sorry for the wait!
When you start the software you should see this screen.
Thanks god, the software is in english and japanese.
If for some reason when your MMD starts you are seeing it in japanese,
you can revert it to english from the top menu.
The command is under the HELP menu.
So if the software is in japanese, just go to help menu and switch to english there.
So, we have finished with the required software for now.
Let me briefly introduce you MMD interface.
The main interface is divided in 3 parts.
The one on the right here is the timeline.
If you don't know what a timeline is, it's a visual representation of the passing time.
But to understand better what I mean, you need to understand the concept of frame.
It may sound boring distressing on what is a frame, but to fully utilize a 3d animation program, you need to understand few basic concepts first.
So, let's start our discussion on frames.
You probably have studied at school the invention of the cinema by Lumiere brothers,
and you probably know already that a movie is a sequence if still images reproduced really fast.
This applies in cinema, television and of course in 3D videos as well.
Which can be as slow as 25-30 still images per seconds, but, of course can be higher than that.
So, our brain processes these still images as a sequence, hence generating the impression of movement.
So frame is the term we use to refer to these kind of still images.
So, let's get back on our timeline now.
So, the numbers you see here are the tubers of the frames, starting progressively from 0.
Assuming we are using 30 frames per second (fps), as the name says, every 30 frames is one second.
So, keep in mind this basic concept when messing around with the timeline.
So, in the timeline, we will find and edit "time-related" events in our video. Sounds complicate, i know, but it's easy after you play around with it.
I know you have more westerns, but for now, let's keep it simple. The timeline is the place in which you control the time.
Please also note that in these lessons we will work using 30fps settings.
So, let's move to the next part of the interface.
I guess you are wandering what these huge withe area does.
If the timeline is the area to control the "time", in this white area we control our 3D "space".
While time was hard to explain, space is really simple to explain, because we can visually see it. Let me load a model of Hatsune Miku.
Let me search for the file...
the model i will show you now is made by REMaple.
Ok it has loaded now.
As you see, in this area of the interface we can "see" and "move" our 3D space.
Not only this, but this also serves to preview what our video will look like.
I am sure you want to start already to peek under Miku's skirt...
but please focus for a little bit more! We are about to end our lesson in few minutes.
So, we will make our video operating on this "space" making edits through "time" by altering "properties" of these 3D models.
Properties can be edited in the last part of the interface, which is here at the bottom.
If by any chance you have also followed my "How to make Vocaloid Music" lessons, we could recap everything in this simple way.
The timeline would be our "sequencer",
each of the 3D models we use in the video would be an instrument of the "rack",
but again this comparison is useful only for people who watched my other video lessons.
Anyway the 3 keywords you have to remember are, "time", "space" and "property".
Seems complex but you will get the concept better in the incoming lessons.
Thats's all for today's lesson.
Contrarily to music lessons, the MMD lessons are every two weeks.
Honestly I will do my best to bring the course on a weekly basis, but for a while we will have to stick to a lesson every 2 weeks.
Thank you so much for watching and if you have questions or requests, please write it in the comments! See you!
