Hello ! Everything ok ? Today I'll try to speak Portuguese,
a language that I haven't had many opportunities to speak.
When I was in Portugual, I couldn't speak Portuguese
and I only had an opportunity
when some Portuguese friends of mine from Lisbon came to Rome
and I tried to speak Portuguese with them the whole time.
But my Portuguese was very basic back then.
What I did wrong when I decided to start learning Portuguese was to underestimate the difficulty of this language.
I already spoke Italian, my mother tongue, and Spanish
which are very similar language
so I thought that all I needed to do was to just listen to people speak in order to learn.
I searched for some podcast in Portuguese
and I found it online
and I used to listen to the episodes almost every day,
I was able to understand pretty much everything they said,
but I didn't pay too much attention to the differences between Spanish or Italian, for example, and Portuguese.
Normally, being exposed to a language, full immersion,
is one of the most effective techniques to learn,
but in this case, as I said before, I already spoke Italian and Spanish
which wasn't really an advantage in this case
and furthermore, Portuguese grammar is a lot more complex than Spanish grammar, for example.
The result was what linguists call "Language transfer",
that is an interference between similar languages.
When I tried to speak Portuguese with my friends from Lisbon, for example,
I used to "transfer" words or sentence structure from the Spanish language to the Portuguese language.
I remember that I was trying to tell them that the stores were closed (fechadas),
but I said that the stores were "cerradas".
"Cerrada" is clearly a Spanish word that I used in the Portuguese language
and I even pronounced it with a Portuguese accent.
So my mistake was to learn Portuguese in two phases but in the wrong order.
I began by being exposed to the language, by simply listening to the language
and I continued with grammar
and with a very important activity:
verifying what I had learned.
You can do this, for example, reproducing the conversations you've heard,
(in a written form or not) and then compare the result with the original text.
This way you can really notice the differences with the language that causes interference.
What I should have done instead was to begin from this phase
and then continue with the exposure to the language
which is what I'm currently doing with movies and Portugues TV shows
which can be easily found on YouTube.
