The Shitty Vegan Kitchen: Vegan Hacks and Snacks - Duration: 8:56.

[Bounce Ball begins playing]

Hello and welcome to the Shitty Vegan Kitchen. In this episode, we're going to be learning

different vegan hacks.

Alright, so one of the first things I'm looking at is Buzzfood's "Seventeen Cooking Hacks Every

Vegan Should Know".

First vegan hack, "You can create vegan buttermilk by adding vinegar to any non-dairy milk".

Okay.

So, I only have apple cider vinegar, so I hope that that works and I have some soy milk

here and a measuring cup because that's what's on the picture and a fork.

It's one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for one cup of non-dairy milk and then you

have to let it sit for five to ten minutes. So, I don't want to make that much because

I don't actually like -

I don't want to waste anything, so I'm just gonna put like that much milk, tiny bit, like

a splash or so. Oh, yeah, okay I'll add a little more milk. This is like very reminiscent

of the last video.

I'm going to just like stir that up. That's all stirred up

and I'm going to let it sit for the five to ten minutes, and then we can check on it.

So, another hack is using either flax or chia meal with water as an egg replacement. I don't

have flax meal. but I do have flax seeds, which I can try my best to grind up. I'm supposed

to get - I did actually measure this because I want to get it right. I have three tablespoons

of water and then one tablespoon of flax seeds, oh, and they're stuck all over. Gonna get

just a tiny bit more.

Okay, I don't have a mortar and pestle because I couldn't find it but I'm going to try to

use this spoon and this little cup. I know I'm not going to break this down into flax

meal, but if I could just like break them down slightly so that they'll have like a

similar

effect.

[chopping noises]

Well, it's sort of working. Well, it is what it is.

Alright, so I'm mixing the lightly pounded-grounded flax. Oh, also let this stand for five to

ten minutes. And while it is standing, we are going to check on our vegan buttermilk.

It smells a lot like apple cider vinegar. I'm going to actually give you a little taste

test. Oh, that's very vinegary.

It's kind of like a really watery yogurt. I - I think this could work. I think this

could easily work, and it doesn't taste like poison so that's a good sign.

Okay, so another thing I consider to be a vegan hack is an easy vegan snack hack. It

is banana, some kind of seed or nut.

I have sunflower seeds, non-dairy milk - I have soy. You open up your banana. This is

a really good comfort food, I find, like when you're craving something, I usually like to

eat this at night when I really want like a late night snack.

Feels kind of healthier but it's also like very, there's just something - I had this

when I was a kid, so there's something just very like comforting about it. Banana is in

the bowl. You put as much milk as you want, depending on how like watery you want it to

be or how thick you want it to be.

And then you throw in your sunflower seeds.

Woo.

And then you gotta mush it all up. That's right, I'm making mushed banana. A lot of

people think that this is baby food, but it's everybody food. Babies don't have to have

the monopoly on mushed bananas and mushed foods in general, okay? Babies can share.

You also do this with a frozen banana if you want it to be cold and kind of more like ice-cream.

[Hums]

And then you have mushed banana. It's good because you've got fruit and protein all in

one snack. Cool vegan hack snack.

So, I'm going to see how long my flax seeds have done. It would have been a lot better

to use flax meal, I recognize, but even so, the texture of the water has gotten bit like

sticky, like it's got that - it's not quite eggy but it's like going there.

Depending on what you want when you're baking, like if you're okay with just having straight

up flax seeds in it, I think that this is probably fine, but if you don't want to actually

you know encounter flax seeds when you're eating it,

then definitely get the ground kind, but I know that - I think - I think I've tried this

using whole flax seeds that I've just kind of punched a little bit.

I've tried this before and I think that depending on the recipe it can work, as you do you get

that same kind of texture. So, Buzzfood recommends an app called, "Is it Vegan?" where you scan

the bar codes of different items and it tells you whether or not it's vegetarian, vegan,

or neither of those things. So, I downloaded it on my phone, and I have things in front

of me right now that I can scan.

First thing that I'm going to scan is the crackers. There we go.

It got it. Oh, unknown product, ingredient list not available. Okay, so it doesn't know,

so good - good way to start. The next thing that we're going to do is Oreos, and I know

that Oreos are vegan because I've heard it a million times that they're vegan, and I've

looked at the ingredients, and this app better know what they are.

Duh duh duh duh duh, duh duh duh duh. Duh, duh, duh.

Okay, definitely vegetarian. One vegetarian ingredient, ten vegan ingredients. Oh, yeah,

I told it to only consider sugar vegetarian rather than vegan

just, I just made that choice, it asked me whether I wanted to do that.

So, if you consider sugar to be not vegan, then Oreos are not vegan. If you consider

sugar to be vegan,

then Oreos are vegan.

It worked for Oreos. Oreos passed the test.

I'm going to scan these - these guys, they are sesame seed and quinoa brown race crackers.

Oh, it got it. It got it! Unknown product. This isn't very helpful so far, no offence

[crash onto the floor] but it's not.

Bagels. Are bagels vegan? Unknown product! What?

Okay, now we're gonna do this margarine. Pretty sure, unless they specify, most margarines

are not vegan. Unknown product. [laughs]

Okay, this is like Becel, or Becel, or however you say it. Kay, like it gives you the option

to add it, and they'll add it to their database, but, I don't know, that's like - it seems

to not know a lot more than it does know.

See if it knows the chai tea, if it doesn't know the chai tea, I'm giving up on this app

and uninstalling it immediately. So, it knows that it is Tetley chai tea, uh two vegan ingredients,

tea and natural spice, so it's vegan. As I would expect from chai.

It seems like it works well for major brand name stuff but if you buy like no-name stuff

from your grocery store, or like from smaller companies, it's probably not going to recognize

it, so that's like not super helpful.

Another easy vegan hack snack is kale chips. Take your kale, dump your kale. Now the kale

actually reduces in size quite a bit when you cook it, so it might look like you have

like a ton of kale on your tray, but it's going to get like a lot smaller. Apparently

with kale too, you really shouldn't eat it raw, or you shouldn't eat it like, you can

eat it raw - oh gosh - you can eat it raw in a uh smoothie or something like if it's

been like mulched up, or you can um just cook it a little bit, or steam it, or bake it,

as I'm about to do, because it's a lot easier for you to digest that way.

So, normally, I would put a little bit of oil. We just ran out of oil because I keep

making kale chips. Unless. Unless I go to the dark side. We do have this Pam. [spraying

noise]

Okay, so I just used some spray-on oil, I don't know if that was a bad thing to do,

but I made that call.

Gonna use salt. Lots and lots of pepper because [grinding noise] I like things with pepper.

Basil. And now it's time for thyme.

Put them in the oven. Now, it's really easy to burn these guys, so I usually put on a

timer for about five minutes, check on them, um they're usually not cooked by then, but

then I'll do like another three minutes, so eight to ten minutes in the oven, um I have

the oven set to 365, which isn't too hot.

Yeah, they cook really fast and they burn really easily, so you don't wanna burn them,

cause then that's disappointing.

Okay, so here's our buttermilk. Kind of like just a thicker version of soy milk. Gonna

spin it around.

Here is our flax seed, egg replacement. You can see it's kinda like bloop bloop bloop.

Here's our disgusting-looking but very yummy banana mush. Oh, yeah.

And our kale chips are done. As you can see, they're kind of crunchy and the whole thing

is just a lot smaller, and they make for delicious chips.

Yay, whoo, yay!

Thank-you so much for watching. If you have any suggestions for different vegan foods

or recipes you'd like me to try in another video, please leave them in the comments below.

Also, feel free to share any of the vegan hacks that you might have. If you watched

my last video, you might have noticed that I finally come up with my outtro catchphrase,

which is, wherever you are in life, I hope that you are learning as much as you can.

Thanks again for watching, and bye.

Can I reach? Oh, it's so far away. Okay, goodb-

Skoolie Build : Chapter 3 - Seat Removal And An Interview With A Six Year Old - Duration: 6:19.

Hello everyone and welcome to The Hippie Geeks!

Our bus has graciously let us know that her name is Sol!

Lets take a look at the outside of our beautiful lady, as we have not formally introduced her

yet.

Outside she is mechanically sound, her paint is just a little rough and she has a couple

of spots with surface rust that we will be taking care of.

You can see where the school district sprayed out the flashers, and we plan on replacing

those with flood lights at some point.

This side of the bus is the worst, and even that isnt really too bad.

Lets move inside, as we have been able to get some work done in there.

Our bus is for the most part mechanically sound.

We will have the transmission fixed next month, and for a worst case scenario on the alignment

we were quoted $400 which we will probably have done in the next couple of weeks.

I forgot to mention it in the last video, but during the drive home from Coos Bay we

picked up a pretty nasty chip in the drivers side windshield.

I have no interest in replacing it as they run around $800, so we tracked down a local

place to get it fixed up before it developed into a crack.

We wound up at Willamette Valley Glass, and they were awesome to work with.

The price was great, the customer service was amazing, and most importantly you can't

even tell that the glass was ever chipped.

They are another business that I can recommend if you need some help and are in the area.

With the mechanical issues sorted, it is time get started on the inside of our bus.

This year we are focused on getting the bus to a point where we aren't worried about her

breaking down on us.

We will not have enough left over to really dig into a full remodel, but we do want to

use it for camping this year.

To do that, we will be leaving in five of the existing school bus seats, one for each

of the passengers so that everyone has plenty of space to themselves.

In the back, we will be putting sturdy bunks for everyone's beds.

A double bunk on both sides of the bus in the back for the kids, and a bed for us.

The rest of the space will be taken up by our existing camp gear.

Before I started tearing things out, I wanted to get some basic measurements of the space

we have.

I work as an architectural drafter, so I have the tools and the ability to model the entire

bus in 3D before we ever start on the full remodel.

The first order of business was to remove the padded panels that are between the front

seats and the front of the bus.

They really close off the seating area, and we wanted them out.

While I was working on that, Lindsay decided to remove some of the stickers that the school

district had applied to the front of the bus.

It was stinky work with some Goof Off and a scraper, but she made quick work of it as

I removed the padded panels.

Once those were out, it was time to work on the seats we will be getting rid of.

We lucked out, as our bus was already equipped to haul three wheelchairs so many of the seats

were already out.

I only needed to remove four seats to get to the number we needed.

I started out by trying to unbolt them, but of course nothing in life is ever that easy

so I wound up taking the angle grinder to most of the bolts to get them removed.

It was a bit of work, but they were finally all popped out and the seats were set in the

rear of the bus.

Once the seats were out, it was time to remove the seat belts.

We are planning to add seat belts to not only whatever seating we build in the bus, but

also to the bunks so that if the kids want to hang out back there while we are driving,

they will be able to do so legally and safely.

In our bus, the belts were pretty easy to remove.

There is a metal guard plate that helps to keep them from getting twisted, and you need

to pull that to be able to get them out.

I also had to loosen the bottom cushion of the seat, and then remove the bolt attaching

the seat belt to the seat frame.

After that you can just pull them out.

If your bus comes with seat belts like ours did, I highly recommend removing them from

the seats before you get rid of them, you never know when you will be able to use one

in the future, and they aren't cheap.

After pulling them all, this is the pile I was left with.

I will put them away for now, hopefully somewhere I can remember later.

Looking around the bus, it is nice to see even these little pieces of progress.

It is so easy to get overwhelmed with the enormity of the task ahead of us remodeling

the bus, but it is nice to be able to look at any project, however small, and know that

it is getting us closer to our goal.

With the seats out of the bus, we moved on to a couple of other projects.

As we will not be doing a full remodel yet, we wanted some way to easily block off the

windows while we are camping.

We had the idea of picking up a couple os $7 painters tarps and hold them up with some

magnetic clips.

We need to pick up a few more clips, but even with as few as we had it was being held up

just fine.

This should give us the privacy we want, without breaking the bank.

Here is a quick look at the temporary stereo setup.

I wired it into the existing constant and switched power, but we wanted to use some

4x8 speakers that we had instead of the existing ones.

For now we are just letting them attach to the dash with their magnets, and we are using

some electrical tape and wire loom to keep the wiring cleaned up.

At this point, Noah hopped up into the bus, and I figured it was a good time to ask him

what he likes about the bus.

James:Hey Noah, wanna be in the video?

Noah:Sure.

James:Noah, what is your favorite part about the bus?

Noah:That is has ginormous wheels.

James:You love the big wheels?

Noah:Yes.

James:What else do you like?

Noah:I also like how um, the windows can open like other kinds of school buses.

James:That's pretty awesome, what else do you like?

Noah:I like how it has a ... I like how it can go really fast.

James:That is also pretty awesome.

What else?

Noah:I also like that the roof is really hard.

So it can be protected from rain.

James:Awesome.

Is there anything else you like?

Noah:It's also really good that we have stereo so we can hear music.

James:I do like that.

What else?

Noah:It's really good also that you have seatbelts because always have seatbelts in buses.

James:Why?

Noah:It's because so people don't like hit their heads on the ground.

James:Ooooh.

That's a good thing.

Is there anything else that you like?

Noah:Nope.

James:That's it?

Noah:Yep.

James:All right.

Do you want to show everybody how to use the seatbelt?

Noah:No.

James:No?

Ok.

Noah:Can I see the video?

I love the thoughts that come out of his mouth when he answers questions off of the top of

his head like that.

Bus wise, that is as far as we have gotten with things.

Up next is removing the wheelchair lift, and starting to get some bunks put in here to

get ready for camping.

If this is your first time here on The Hippie Geeks it would be wonderful to have you subscribe!

"Hanamai Tsukuyomi Tan" Music by Hoskey Lyrics by Yukie Dong (Their petals sway...)

"Hanamai Tsukuyomi Tan" Music by Hoskey Lyrics by Yukie Dong

Motions tracing the crescent moon, dances the sword

Of the girl with the peach-colored hair

Like scattering petals of crimson flowers

Are sprays of blood

The edge of her sword, purified by the moonlight

Within a nefarious castle of the moonlit night

The lone girl

Slays a demon before her

A string of fate severed, of unity once broken

Her smile, evanescent

"I vow my promise to you shall be fulfilled, someday"

Lotuses of crimson in bloom

A hundred flowers in motion, dances the sword

Like scattering petals of crimson flowers

Blooming in their glory

Even if time passes

I long to travel through time to find you

Her lips, a quiver

My promise... For you... Never forgotten

Delicate cherry blossoms

Their blooming flowers disperse

Comes a sorrowful memory of my own despair

As the swaying petals fall

Delicate cherry blossoms

Their blooming flowers disperse

I swore myself to find you, your smile

In the emptyness of the hazy moon, a dance

Where Are The Women In Computing? | Planet Money | NPR - Duration: 3:08.

Computer science today is a male-dominated field.

We know this.

I've been meeting these women -- women whose names we should know too --

badass computing pioneers --

women who are now in their 70s and 80s

but who programmed some of the first digital computers

back in the days when software was written in machine language -- in binary.

So how did women go from being the center of the computing world

-- the pioneers of the industry --

to being sidelined?

I think the answer lies somewhere in this graph.

It's a graph of the percentage of women studying computer science.

And it compares those numbers to the numbers of women studying

medicine and law and physical sciences

-- and you know the number of women in all these fields are all going up --

but then, something big happens

-- something that changes the course of computer science.

And what's amazing about that is you can actually put your finger on the moment where this changed.

It was 1984.

There was no grand conspiracy in computer science that we uncovered.

There was no sign on the door that said "girls keep out."

In 1984 you couldn't succeed in a computer science program without having had a home computer.

And this bled into the workforce.

Even if you weren't studying computer science but you wanted to work on it,

you needed the experience of using one, of playing with one.

Early home computers popped up in the places that were already the world of boys.

[Commercial: "This morning, Brian Scott made a career decision.

"He decided to be an astronaut.

"His first giant step: learning to use an Apple."

Jane Margolis is an education researcher who's now at UCLA.

And she has a theory about this.

Take this one student Jane interviewed named Lily:

She was the one who was really into computers in high school.

But even though she was the one who was really into computers,

the computer was placed in her brother's room.

Once you have something like this happening, it reinforces itself.

Computers are for boys. They are boy toys that boys use to do boy things.

And this became a narrative, this story we told ourselves.

Margolis had some idea about how this had happened.

But she wanted to figure out how to stop the clock -- how to reverse this --

how to find a way to get women back in.

Margolis did her research with a guy named Allan Fisher,

who was the dean of computer science at Carnegie Mellon at the time.

To give girls a chance to make up for what they missed

in those years when boys were messing around with computers in their bedrooms,

Carnegie Mellon added an intro course for students who didn't have a lot of informal computer science experience.

They started paying a lot more attention to teaching.

And it worked!

By 2000, 42 percent of the computer science students at Carnegie Mellon were women.

And the dropout rate for men and women was basically the same.
