Good afternoon class, this is Ms. Dyess and today we will be discussing climates in different

regions of the world.

Specifically, climates in Alaska versus Pensacola Florida.

To get you thinking about the contrasting climates I want you to think about what you

may pack on a trip to Alaska versus Pensacola.

Here are some pictures to get you thinking about what you may pack for this trip.

Now that we have watched these videos clips we have a better idea of we may pack on a

trip to Alaska versus Pensacola.

Now I have this jacket right here and I think we can all agree that I would take this to

Alaska because of the cold temperatures and I have this sun dress right here and I think

we can all agree that we would take this on a trip to Pensacola and wear on the beach, probably.

Based on your decisions of what to pack to Pensacola versus Alaska you may have used

prior knowledge to observe these climatic differences between the two climates.

Primary climatic differences include contrast in temperatures and precipitation.

In this case, Pensacola being warm and Alaska being cold.

The precipitation differences being, Florida having rain and Alaska having snow.

To introduce climate, climate can be described as the weather patterns over a long period

of time in one regional area.

DO NOT confuse this with weather!

As weather is observed over short periods of time such as months or weeks.

As discussed before, temperature and average precipitation levels are very important aspects of climate.

Alaska is considered a polar climate whereas Florida is considered a tropical climate.

These two climates are based on their average temperature and precipitation levels.

Although these climates have weather patterns it is important to understand that each climate has seasons.

Earth's climates are part of a continuously changing atmosphere.

It is important to understand and not misinterpret that all climates have seasons.

Climate is observed over a longer period of time, as in years!

Climate can depend on many different things; such as latitude which is the distance North

or South of the equator.

Now I have a globe here and the equator is located right here and runs through the center

of the Earth, and North and South of this is what climate depends on.

Climate can also depend on elevation which is the distance above sea level, topography,

which is the shape of the land such as mountains or deserts, and distance from water helps

the air temperature from changing a lot over the land.

It can also depend on: global winds and ocean currents.

TO recap the information that we just covered about Earth's climates: climate are aspects

of Earth's atmosphere that can be observed over many years, compared to weather which

is observed over weeks or months.

Today we discussed two different climates and compared what we may pack on a trip to

each of them.

Polar versus tropical, Alaska versus Florida.
