Stronger Communities Scholarship Video - Duration: 2:32.Hi everyone my name is Brianna Chandra and I am filming this at UCSD where I
live and have found my community. Going into college I was really scared
of finding the right people and the right friends. Little did I know God
had it all planned out; I just had to trust Him! Because I found my best friend
in my roommate and I found my suitemates to be some of my closest friends.
I think that the key to building stronger communities is that
foundation of trust and having that foundation of respect and open
communication is so important. You can't just have friendship and
have it last without having that first rock-solid foundation of "I trust
you" and "you trust me" and and we're able to move on past problems and things like
that because we respect each other enough to have communication and
let each other know when are having problems and things like that. Next
year as an RA I'm going to be able to facilitate that, which is so exciting
because I'm able to take everything that I've learned this year and
apply it to my residents next year and help them with
finding their place at the school (which can be really big and
scary) but helping them find family with their suitemates and with each
other. I'm going to do that by example by initiating
relationships, by being the first person to reach out and talk to them, and by being
their first friend so they feel like they have someone to count on. By
doing that, they can do that with their suitemates, and they can form their
own relationships as well based on what they've seen me do. I'm going to
apply everything that I learned this year, which is not being afraid to
be the first person to facilitate conversation, not being afraid to ask someone how they're doing and if
they're saying "I'm doing okay," "I'm doing good," just asking them
more and showing them that you actually care every day with your actions and not
just, "Oh have a good day!" but actually taking the time to sit down and
get to know them is a really great way to build a relationship, and
that's how community is formed-- being intentional and taking time to do that.
That's what I'm going to do as an RA. Helping them feel welcomed is a
really big passion that I have in my heart, so that is all going to go into
helping make stronger communities here at UCSD!
