Hi everyone! My name is Dr. Maria Schellhase and it is my pleasure to serve as
your facilitator for this course. We will be
spending the next 16 weeks together and
although that sounds like a really long
time to some of you, I guarantee that
that time is going to fly by. For those
of you who have had classes with me in the
past,
well you're probably doing a dance right
now because you already know where to
find things within our classroom. That's
right all of my courses are structured
similarly. Meaning it really doesn't
matter whether you're in my Management
212 class, Business 107, Business 108, Management 283 and the list goes
on and on.
Yes, the content is different but where
you find things in Canvas and how its
structured as a class is definitely the
same. Now those of you who are taking my
course for the first time, this video
will definitely come in handy because
I'm going to just show you where a
couple of really important things are
within our classroom and by doing this
hopefully I'm saving you some time. So
let's go ahead and get started. Today
we're going to talk about our course
homepage, the module and announcement
folder, we're also going to be touching
upon our grade book. These are really
important items within our course
classroom. Also we're going to be talking
about our lab and remember the lab is
absolutely required and mandatory for
this course. Without the course lab you
will not pass the course. So getting
registered as soon as possible is
essential to your success. We'll also be
talking about the parameters for the lab
here in a moment. Finally we're going to touch upon the
rules of engagement and what I mean by
that is how we're going to be
communicating and where you are going to
find some announcements from me and
important things that you really need to
review so that you ensure your success
in this class. The course homepage is like a
one-stop-shop. Yep, that's right!
Lots of really great information lives
on our course homepage. Now I'm going to
show it to you here in a minute but i
just wanted to provide a short list of
what you'll find there. That's where
you're going to find a copy of the
syllabus that you can then print out. It's in a PDF attachment so you
shouldn't have any trouble printing out
the course syllabus. And by the way,
students who do this are more successful
than those students who don't. So print
out the course syllabus review it
know it refer to it often bring it with
you wherever you go. Whatever it takes!
You definitely want to do that because
it'll help you succeed. Also available is of course a syllabus
video so definitely take some time to
review those. You also find a get
inspired video some information in
regards to lab links which we'll talk
about here in a moment a tutorial link
and some information in regards to how
you would contact me. So as I mentioned
all of my courses are structured
similarly and this is just the main
graphic that you will see on our course
homepage. As you can see this is where
your syllabus items are the get inspired
video and these are the two links I was
talking about earlier.
Now, some of my courses use the
McGraw-Hill Connect lab while others may
use the Pearson MyBcomm/MyMarketing Lab. Make
no mistake about it. It really doesn't
matter which lab that your course is using. You will always have a link that takes
you directly to the spot that you need
in order to get registered for the lab
and they will have another link that
will get you directly into that lab in
order to complete course assignments. Once you're registered, you really don't
need this link any more focus more on
the quick link that will take you
directly into the lab to complete
assignments. Now throughout the course as
I mentioned I will be providing
tutorials. These tutorials help the new
students those of you who've had my
courses in the past you should be
experts at this by now but certainly
there might be a new one that I might
post and so this
is a quick link that will take you into
the modules folder and into the
tutorials file. Finally as i mentioned my contact
information is posted right here. It's
also posted in the course syllabus and
there really is no excuse to asking
questions asking for clarification or
just asking for assistance. That's why I'm here I'm here to mentor
you I'm here as your advocate so
definitely let me know if you need
assistance. If you need me right away the
cell phone is the way to go. However if your question is general in
nature I'm going to show you here in
just a few moments where you're going to
post those general questions. Your
modules folder is perhaps the most
important folder other than of course
the announcements and the grade book. This
is where your tutorials live this is
where a full list of assignments will
also live with full instructions on each
of those assignments as well as a
detailing of how many points you can
earn from that particular assignment and
when each assignment is due. If
powerpoint presentations and Chapter summaries are available you'll
also find these within the modules
folder. If you need templates to complete
assignments that will also be included
within your modules folder. So let's go
ahead and take a look at the modules
folder in more detail. As you can see
this is your left hand tool bar. The
modules folder is directly below the
Home tab. You just need to left click on
that in order to then see your modules
folder expanded. As I said your tutorials
will always be at the top and you can
expand or kind of condense those
folders and that goes for every week
that is posted thereafter. This is where
all of your assignments will be as well
as your points earned and you can see
pretty quickly
how many points are available as well as
when the assignment is due and if you
left click for example, on any of these
assignments that will provide a very
detailed instructions for you on that
particular assignment
and it will also provide a video if one
is necessary and in some cases it will
also show you a grading rubric. I do
suggest that you review your grading
rubric before getting started on the
assignment itself. So let's see here the
discussion questions will not show you a
grading rubric but the other assignments
will. For example the lab assignments
let's talk about the lab assignments
here for a moment as I mentioned you do
need 80% or higher to earn
full credit. You can work ahead in the
lab. If you miss assignment you can go
back and redo the assignment as long as
it is before the last day of class. If
you score lower than 80% you
will receive points but you will only
receive points for the
percentage of points that you received
correct. So the lower the percentage of
course and lower the score. Also please
keep in mind as I mentioned previously
it may take me a few days to get the
points logged into the lab. So here's
just an example of a grading rubric for
a lab that will tell you each of the
components that you need to complete in
order to successfully complete the full
assignment.
Yes, each component is graded separately. In regards to announcements
yes i will be posting announcements each
week and I'm going to show you that in
just a moment. But really this is going
to be our primary source of
communication especially for my online
courses. For my hybrid courses yes we
will be meeting once a week. However keep
in mind things happen between the times
that we meet and so it's really
important for all students to be
checking the announcements folder at a
minimum one time each week. Here you will
find your general question thread the
check in thread for the online courses
a weekly assignment recap which will
then dive into each week specifically
and provide details on that particular
week that will talk about the
deliverables for that week
and will provide any specific tips that
you might need in order to complete the
assignment successfully and get through
that weak feeling really good about
yourself . I'll also be posting things that are
going on around CSN as well as any
particular job opportunities that might
be on the horizon or anything that i
might think that you need to know. If
there are technical difficulties for
example within the lab, always look in Canvas because i will be posting an
announcement there. This is just an
example of one of my courses but as I
mentioned previously most of my courses
are structured similarly. So you always
see a welcome to class so please read
that . Your general question thread will
be posted each week and depending on the
week that were in I'm asking that all
general questions be posted here. You
just left click on the link and make
sure that your question is falling
between those dates there then you're
going to select reply and click in the
box here and start typing your question. As soon as you're done typing you just
click on post reply and that will post
your question to our forum. I will
respond within 24 hours but as I
mentioned in the post if you need me
immediately the best mode to reach me is
cell phone. Also in the announcements
folder for all you online folks out
there is a check in thread. And because
we're not meeting during the week I do
ask that you check in a minimum of one
time each week so again you would
left-click make sure that your check-in
falls between the dates mentioned
select reply and then check into our
forum. This tells me that you're engaged
in class that you're reading your
announcements and that you're in the
game. If I don't see assignments being
completed and I don't see that you
posted to that check in thread I'm going
to come hunting for you. So it's
definitely worth your while to take the
few minutes out of your day to do that. Also information about how to get
registered for the lab or anything else
that's important to you in regards to
our course in particular will be posted
within this announcements folder. Finally it's really important to check
your grade book often. This is where I
will be providing your feedback and
uploading the points from the lab into
the canvas grade book. In order to know
where you stand in class you need to
check that grade book. Keep in mind it may
take me a few days to get the points
from the lab and enter them into Canvas. However have no fear it will happen. Make sure you read my feedback and make
sure that you're checking that grade
book as often as you can. This will keep you aware of where you
stand in class and that way there
won't be any surprises in regards to
your final grade when we hit that 16th
week. Please keep in mind that in regards
to communication Canvas really trump's
all. All you'll be doing in your course lab
is completing assignments. Any questions
anything that you might need from me
needs to be posted in Canvas. I'd like to
welcome you to class again. Please
understand that as I mentioned before
I'm your advocate. I will be very
involved in this course and hopefully
responsive to your needs to help you to
succeed.
Make no mistake about it. I'm here for
you every step of the way. However I
can't do it alone.
I really need you to take some of the
responsibility in completing your
assignments
and speaking up when you need assistance
or just need clarification or have
questions. With that being said, if you do I ask you to do, I guarantee that you
will leave class just knowing more about
this particular subject and you will be
able to apply what you learned in
regards to concepts and topics both
professionally and personally welcome to
class let's have some fun.
