Information Communication Technology Video Series Introduction - Duration: 6:02.

Hi, my name is Darrel Vickers, I'm from Washington, Missouri.

My name is Gretchen Maune and I'm from Blue Springs, Missouri.

This is Keeper. He is my guide dog.

I am Shelly Shetley.

My name is Darren D.a.r.r.e.n.

My name is Mary Secora S.e.c.o.r.a.

My name is April Mason Donovan

There's several. Of course, you know, I use my iPhone, that's real popular as well as an iPad

and my computer is adaptive as well. Primarily, I use video relay service for

my telecommunications. I have a specific designated video relay phone in my office.

There are also apps that are really good benefit to me as well

as a deaf person. Or a person with the hearing loss. I was born deaf.

I am right now, the only thing I have left

as far as eyesight is some light perception. So I have to use technology.

The technology I use the most are screen readers. On iPhones they call it

VoiceOver. On Android they call it TalkBack. But mainly everything that you

would see on the screen, the computer reads that out loud to me

in a nice computer-generated voice.

My disability I was classified as having Cerebral Palsy

at the age of 2 due to a car accident.

Up until 2, I was normal 2 year old. And the assistive technology that I use:

I mostly use Dragon Dictate the professional version.

Whether for work or personal, I can go

online and find something that I was not sure existed, compare prices, buy it, and it

is on my doorstep in 2 days. If you step back and think about it, this guy

that has a surviving muscle, and that muscle is triggering a switch and those

switch triggers are making things happen!

Access to the Internet is so important

for people with disabilities, whether they're blind or have another disability.

Having the Internet makes it so that we can access whatever we need.

Maybe sometimes it's hard for me to just go pay a bill as well, or write a check,

or stop by city hall to pay my electric bill. But because of the

Internet I can pay that online.

So, if there's no captioning on those videos I don't understand what's going on.

It goes right past me. It's hard to lip read.

Customer satisfaction surveys are one example.

For me this can be a quick easy task or it can be a long arduous task.

It all depends on the online survey instrument being used.

If the web application has been designed with keyboard navigation

in mind, all is good for me. If not, I go to more effort to use mouse control.

And if the web application has mouse over menus, or small button targets,

this customer satisfaction begins to plummet.

I think one of the things that adaptive equipment, assistive devices,

accessibility, it's been a real equalizer for people with disabilities.

They can do things that everybody else is doing, yet they can remain independent!

So, being able to navigate with a keyboard

and making sure that all controls on that site, on that form, whatever you

might be doing, can be navigated using so, I use Tab I use the Arrow Keys I use a

to activate a link I'm going to use Enter or Return. And so one thing I think some

designers can do is go through and take the "keyboard challenge" if you will and just see,

is my site , can I do what I need to on the site without using the mouse?

Accessible design matters!

Accessible design matters!

Accessible Design Matters 100%! Let's do it!

Upbeat Music.
