Hi and welcome to "The Spoonful," a weekly roundup of stories happening right here in
your community.
I'm community editor Rachel Minske.
And I'm Josh Towner, editorial intern at Southwest.
This week we're filming from Lakefront Park, right here in Prior Lake.
This will actually be the site of Lakefront Days, a big city-wide celebration coming to
Prior Lake later this week, Thursday through Saturday.
To start off your headlines, a standoff between police and a male believed to be suicidal
ended peacefully Thursday morning after a few hours of negotiations.
Someone called police with concerns about the man on Wednesday evening.
Police later found him in a car with a handgun in the parking lot of the Burnsville Costco.
Police eventually used less lethal tactics to coerce the man out of the vehicle and no
gunfire was exchanged.
Plymouth resident Stephanie Varone was slated to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" for
the Liberty on the Lake benefit concert, featuring headliner and country music star Tim McGraw
yesterday.
The event, which supports Folds of Honor and Helping Paws, was at Lake Minnetonka's Palmer
Pointe in Minnetrista.
Residents were invited to attend by boat, and Varone performed between local artist
Chris Hawkey and Tim McGraw himself.
Varone said she has always had an affinity for the anthem.
A 51-year-old Jordan man died Tuesday after his motorcycle crashed into a pickup truck
in Louisville Township.
According to State Patrol, Randy Darling was driving a Harley Davidson southbound on Highway
169 when a GMC Sierra pulled into the intersection at 150th Street West.
The two vehicles then collided.
Darling was the father of four children and had worked at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel as
a mechanic for the last 17 years.
He volunteered for the Jordan Fire Department and was a part of the Jordan Red Knights Motorcycle
Club.
Darling will be buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with military honors.
Eden Prairie-based grocery wholesaler Supervalu announced Thursday of last week that the company
will be acquired by United Natural Foods for $2.9 billion.
The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2018.
Supervalu's present grocery retail store chains include Cub Foods right here in the Twin Cities,
Shop 'N' Save in St. Louis, Shoppers in Washington D.C. and more.
In some good news, a video of a young boy playing catch over a fence with his canine
neighbor went viral on Facebook last week, but the video has a local tie — it was filmed
in Savage.
Savage resident Erin Richter captured the video of the toddler throwing the ball over
the fence to have it promptly returned by the neighbor's dog, Dozer.
Richter sent the video to the boy's father, who posted it to Facebook where it amassed
more than 8.5 million views in two days.
Richter said she is glad everyone loves a small moment from their "everyday life."
It's a super cute video and you can check that one out plus plenty of other local stories
on our website, swnewsmedia.com and don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram
and Twitter.
Thanks so much for tuning in this week and we'll see you next time.
OK.
Hi, ope.
Sorry, there are bugs.
Oh!
...community editor Rachel Minske.
Hang on, I got a burp coming.
Oh my God.
Sorry.
This week.
... uh.
That's probably a turtle.
Use your creative juices there.
I'm going to head to craft services for a second before another take.
