Today I want to talk to you a bit about Sara Dietschy. She makes tech videos but she
also kind of makes vlogs and the way that she combines those two forms the
unique style that I want to break down in this video. So let's start out simple.
She shoots most of her videos with a Sony a7something and the typical Joby
Gorillapod and rode videomic setup. The lens she uses the most often is a
Sony 16-35 millimeter f/4. It's a wide-angle lens so it's good for vlogging and very
versatile for other types of shots, but in addition she also uses a
Sony 70-200mm f/4 and a 35mm F 2.8 occasionally. She's not one of those
youtubers who's always carrying around their ridiculous camera setup so she
also uses a Sony rx100. It's a point-and-shoot camera so it's good for
having a smaller lighter on the go setup. She films b-roll of just about
everything. No matter what she's talking about, you're not just gonna be watching
a boring talking head video, there's always additional footage to support it.
She also collaborates with other youtubers and filmmakers in just about
every single video. Whether they're the subject of the video or just helping
her film, there's always someone else in front of or behind the camera or both.
And this just allows her to get much better footage and also to have footage
of herself in her own videos. To me one of the most prominent trademarks of her
filming style is motion. Whether it's the camera moving or something in front of
the camera moving there's always very large motion in the frame. One of the
wastes she achieves this large motion on camera is by incorporating timelapses
into her videos, but she also makes quite frequent use of slow motion to exemplify
those smaller faster movements. Shooting time lapses and filming in slow motion
gives her a lot of opportunities in editing. You'll notice quick cuts and
speed ramps everywhere in her videos. She does use LUTs and color grade her
footage but it's not anything crazy or over-the-top, just a subtle grade on the
clips to enhance the look of the footage. Another editing technique
that you'll see used quite frequently in Sarah Dietschy's videos is motion graphics,
particularly text animations. The use of orange, yellow, and pink text and graphics
matches her channel's "peachy" branding and her animation style often matches her
editing style, for example this flickery effect. She doesn't use sound design very
often and when she does it's usually for a very specific purpose, but she does use
this upbeat hip-hop or chillhop type music in almost all of her videos.
Consistently using that same style of music throughout her videos gives them a
very upbeat and positive vibe, and the quick percussive instrumentals really match
that fast-paced jumpy editing style. Overall I think her style of filming and
editing with the large motion and the fast paced editing really complements
the settings of her videos. Whether she's at a large tech convention or just
downtown New York City the setting is oftentimes very loud and fast-paced.
And this filming and editing style really complements that. So
sure, Sara Dietschy has a very unique style of filming and editing but I don't
think that's what makes her videos memorable. As I mentioned at the
beginning of this video, she's making tech videos right now but she also used
to make daily vlogs and I feel like that daily vlog style is definitely bleeding
into her tech videos and forming something very unique. She's essentially
making tech videos in a vlog style and she's doing it in such a way that she
can seamlessly integrate products, collaborations, and even sponsorships
into her videos without it having to feel forced or unnatural. The other great
thing about the way that she discusses technology and products is that she
doesn't dwell on the specs. There's so much more to technology than megapixels
and processors. These are devices that have
impact on your day-to-day life. Vlogging is a way to document your daily life and
by incorporating technology reviews and products into that style she's able to
show you exactly how these products affect your life.
So that is why I think that Sara Dietschy is making some of the most unique and memorable tech videos available right
now. Anyways I hope you enjoyed watching this video or learned something from it
and if you did, do feel free to show your support by leaving a like on the
video or even subscribing to my channel. I post two new videos about filmmaking
every single week. Also a few days ago I posted a brand new cinematic vlog type
video so if you haven't seen that yet feel free to check it out. But that is
all for today's video, keep creating, and I'll see you in the next one.
oh and for any like hardcore Dietschy fans watching this video I promise I didn't
steal like the keep creating outro thing, I've been doing that for a while
but just remember that sometimes sharing is caring so don't attack me in the
comments. aight bye
