Chief Manuelito signed a treaty that allowed the Navajo people to return to the four sacred mountains.
One of his terms was that the Navajo people would be guaranteed an education.
And he felt that if they were provided with that opportunity that it would enrich the tribe,
enrich the people so that they would be able to prepare for future generations
I love everything about my culture. I love Shiprock. I love the rock. I just love the history.
After graduating, just the city wasn't meant for me. Just the size of the city.
It wasn't something that was my calling. I decided to return to New Mexico.
I wanted to provide students with that opportunity to stay in a place that they love
and embraced in their culture, but still have access to quality education.
They are really getting teachers into leadership positions.
Because we are the people that are in the classrooms they know that we are
really the people who are responsible for really making the difference.
And so I got to meet these teachers that were coming from all across the country and they would talk about what they liked about New Mexico.
They love the diversity and the cultures, the outdoors, the monuments, the hikes, the mountains.
They really enjoyed the people. Families are very welcoming.
You come in, we introduce you, you're part of our family. We'll have you stay. We'll cook for you.
We'll make sure you are taken care of. And I think that that's what I hear a lot. It feels like home.
Our future generations. They are the people that are going to save us.
They going to be the people that are going to change the world.
It is our jobs to be able to give them those opportunities and to take that leadership on.
And not have to leave New Mexico to go and pursue other things, but instead they can start on their own here.
