In this example, we're given that a soap film of thickness, point zero zero 1 1 millimeter

appears dark, when seen by reflected light of wavelength 58 hundred angstrom.

we're required to find, what is the refractive index of soap solution if it is between 1

point 2 and 1 point 5. here we know well, that in case of a thin film, having thickness

t and refractive index mu. when it is seen in the reflected light, the path difference

in the 2 lights are taken as 2 mu t minus lambda by 2, because the wave which is reflected

from the top surface, suffers a phase difference of pi, or a path difference of lambda by 2.

and the wave which is reflected from the bottom surface travels an excess path 2 mu t, which

is equivalent in air.

so here we can write path difference, in the 2 waves, constituting, the reflected light,

is, this delta we write as 2 mu t minus lambda by 2. and here we're given that it appears

dark, that means in the reflected light 2 waves are, having destructive interference,

so this path difference must be 2 n minus 1, lambda by 2, that is for destructive interference

to take place.

in this situation if we further simplify, we get 2 mu t is equal to, n lambda. and the

value of refractive index is, n lambda by, 2 t. if we substitute the values it is n multiplied

by, wavelength is 58 hundred, multiplied by 10 to power minus 10 divided by, twice of,

thickness of film is 1 point 1 into, 10 to power minus 6 meter.

so in this situation we can write it as, 1 point 1, multiplied by 10 to power minus 6

meter.

so on simplifying this value, here we get the value of mu is equal to, zero point 2

6 3 n, where the value of n is equal to, 1, 2, 3 and so on integers. and in this situation

we're given that, mu is less than 1 point 5, and it is more than 1 point 2. then in

this situation we can use, for n is equal to 5 if we calculate the value, mu we get

as, 1 point 3 1 8, that'll be the answer to this problem.
