Last year, some students from another class
were bullying one of our class mates all year
One time the bullies tried to hit him
so he hid in the bathroom and locked the door
From there he called his mother, but she was working and did not pick up
His father was away on a trip and could not help him
So he wrote messages to his classmates with the hope that
one of them could tell the teacher.
But they were in class with their mobile phones turned off
In the end, his grandmother called the high school concerned by his messages
After several hours, he was found hiding in the bathroom
He was scared and trembling with fear...
It was a terrible experience for him!
Bullying in our schools is a social problem
that affects 1 in every 4 pupils in Spain
according to official data from Estudio Cisneros 10
So that we are able to talk about bullying in schools
it should be categorized by 3 traits
intention to cause harm
repetition over time and imbalance of power
It is behaviour of harassment, intimidation and physical and or psychological abuse
by one or more culprits against their victim
It is important to distinguish it from other
acts or isolated incidents which are conflicts that form part of everyday life
and should be treated differently.
Victims tend to develop feelings of anguish, anxiety and fear
This decreases their self-esteem and self-control
All of this can result in absence from school
and, in the worst of cases, end up with a suicide attempt
Our school consists of two different buildings
each one has various floors
with multiple work spaces between classrooms
laboratories, offices and common areas
The incidents of bullying that can arise on the playground, for instance
worry us very little
Given that there are numerous witnesses that can warn teachers
and they can be stopped in the act
On the other hand, the situations in which
the bullies stalk or follow their victims, and take advantage of the opportunities
to be alone with them to cause them harm are particularly worrying
Because of this problem, we have considered the development
of our application "Student Care"
This app keeps students and teachers connected
so that teachers are informed
in real time of any aggression that is in progress
at any given moment
We set out to make an app that, above all
was easy and quick to use
You simply need to indicate where you are in the school
choosing a building, floor and room
And if, at any given moment, you suffer or even witness a case of bullying
you press an alarm button or simply shake your mobile
Instantly, all the teachers who are connected to the app will receive
a warning with your location
so that they can go there to help you
The app records the conversation automatically on the device
for the entire duration of the incident
As these recordings are done with the consent of the victim
they can be used as evidence in the judicial process
that could result from these incidents
To develop a prototype of the app, we have used "App Inventor"
and for the distributed communications system, a "Firebase" server
Besides, the buildings structure is defined
through labels inside the server "FireBase"
this way, the app itself can be used
in several educational centers without the need to be modified.
In conclusion, "Student Care" contributes to the avoidance
of bullying in our schools
