March 8th, 2017 - did you know that this day is important to us Minnesota Deaf Community.
What's up with that day, anyway?
Lobby day!
What's that? What is it about?
You know the St. Paul Capitol? There is a building next to it.
State Office Building. During that day, many Minnesota district representative will convene at the building.
We will have our chance to meet our local district representative and inform them about bills, funding, and leglistaive actions
pertaining to the Deaf community. And ask them for the support.
You may want know about the bills, funding, and legislative actions. I'll tell you all about it.
1.) Education bill. This include few things.
Like the family Deaf mentor. This is a program by Lifetrack.
This is for the hearing parents with Deaf children. Communications, educational choices, and future options can become a challenge for the parents.
This program will send a Deaf person to mentor the family. The mentor will expose the parents to the languages available,
future options, etc. There is 30 - 40 families on the waiting list for a Deaf mentor.
That is too much. The waiting list should be shorter. They need to hire more Deaf mentors.
The education bill will help them to receive the funding for more Deaf mentors.
MSAD - the Deaf institute. I'm a MSAD alumni myself. Most of you are aware that MSAD have been through a lot of changes lately.
They want to hire more teachers. They also want to build a track field for the students to compete on during the springtime.
They need the funds to build the field and hire the teachers.
Also, the Twin Cities have ABE (Adult Basic Education) program.
They want to continue with providing education for Deaf adults in the Twin Cities area. We need to give them the support!
That sums up the education bill.
There is other things, such as the DHHSD. They serve the Deaf community in Minnesota.
They have many offices throughout the state. They want to continue serving the Deaf community. They need our support!
MNCDHH - they do the weekly vlogs about the legislative actions that impact the Deaf community and how we can help.
Do you want those vlogs to continue coming? Come to the lobby day and show our support!
The state government have their own websites. Are they fully accessible? No, they are not. We want to change that.
We want to make the websites are accessible for all.
I've told you about the family Deaf mentor program and the waiting list they have. The Vocational Rehabiliation also has one.
They do help high school student with the transition between high school and college. They also help with employment.
The VR's employment waiting list is too long. We want to shorten that so the Deaf folks can achieve employment promptly with the VR.
That's the goal. We need to support the funding for that so the Deaf employment can grow!
Lobby day is very important for the Deaf community in Minnesota.
Come and show that we are there as a community. This will help the representatives to see that we are here. That we are our own community. We have needs.
See you there!
