Waching daily Apr 23 2018

There was a day when painting was new and the people that became good at it

were the ones that were painting it's amazing to me how many people have

opinions about Facebook or Instagram or LinkedIn or making videos or doing this

kind of podcast and getting people to listen to it a whole lot of people with

opinions who've never done it and so I believe the great way to be great at

anything is to be a practitioner you know people ask me all the

time I make the analogy you know you can read about push-ups but if you want the

results that push-ups give you you have to do the push-ups and I just think a

lot of people with business entrepreneurship and specifically being

a social media content creator or a modern media digital creator read a lot

talk a lot to pontificate a lot and don't do a lot the way I figured out how

to have my podcast the way I figured out my youtube show the way I figured out

everything I do is by doing and you're gonna get some bumps and you're gonna

make some mistakes I think most people don't do because they're worried about

what other people think

I think we're all flawed and that's the beauty

of who you are, and instead of trying to make yourself perfect in every area it's

so much easier when you accept the things that you're terrible at or

that are your weaknesses or that are the things about your wiring, look if I were

diabetic I would take insulin I happen to be somebody that's wired for anxiety

no big deal so figure out how to instead of fighting

those things actually trick it because the truth is that you're never gonna

feel ready to make these changes you're never gonna feel like doing them but you

can always make a decision that's always in your control staying with somebody

that treats you like garbage is a decision, staying at a job that you

hate is a decision staying in the body that you are not proud of is a decision

is it going to be easy no it's not gonna be easy to change

it's simple, do a Google search and then use the five-second rule to force

yourself to do that stuff change comes down to five second

decisions and this is why the five-second rule is important for

everybody to know it's your job to push yourself and I don't care if you're

Dr. Martin Luther King jr. or your Michelangelo or your lin-manuel Miranda

who wrote Hamilton you will struggle with self-doubt and everybody that you

admire everybody and the list is the same period Oh Oprah Winfrey and I want

to be like you know Tom and I want to be like you know Branson and I want to be

like jay-z and I want like everybody's list has a Bill Gates and do you know

what those people do they do not have the habit of hesitating they trust themselves

We're surrounded today by people being satisfied with mediocre and for me

as soon as I realised that I could believe in myself and I had a supporting

crew beside me and around me that it opened up a lot of the doors and the

moment I used someone else's standard of excellence that was just enough to get

me moving and then you need to put that person aside or look past that person

and create or do you create your own lane and so for me you know once I

stopped looking at what everybody else was doing and then truly believed in

what I could do that you know combining it with all those character traits that

I talked about before that that's when human potential is truly

truly can be found and experienced

Over a few weeks of difficult training my seal class

which started with 150 men was down to just 42, there are now six boat

crews of seven men each I was in the boat with the tall guys but the best

boat crew we had was made up a little guys the Munchkin crew we called them

No one was over five foot five the Munchkin boat crew had one American Indian one

African American one Polish American one Greek American one Italian American and

two tough kids from the Midwest they out paddled out ran and out swam all the

other boat crews the big men and the other boat crews will always make

good-natured fun of the tiny little flippers the munchkins put on their tiny

little feet prior to every swim but somehow these little guys from every

corner of the nation in the world always had the last laugh swimming faster than

everyone and reaching the shore long before the rest of us

Seal training was a great equalizer nothing mattered but your will to

succeed not your color not your ethnic background not your education not your

social status if you want to change the world measure a person by the size of

their heart not by the size of their flippers, thriving is really the states

beyond surviving and succeeding but what is exciting about the concept of

thriving is that you can be thriving even in the most extreme and challenging

circumstances so it's not as people think that first of all you resolve all

your problems you become financially successful and then you thrive there is

a place in us in which we are thriving independently of our circumstances and

that is really the key about thriving it's not dependent on how our business

is doing on whether we got that next promotion on whether our boyfriend

asked us to marry them or all the things that we normally identify successful

we're growing up in a facebook Instagram world in other words we're good at

putting filters on things we're good at showing people that life is amazing even

though I'm depressed right and so everybody sounds tough and everybody

sounds like they got it all figure it out and the reality is there's very

little toughness and most people don't have it figured out and so when the

more senior people say well what should we do, they sound like this is what you got to do

they have no clue so you have an entire generation growing up with lower

self-esteem than previous generations right through no fault of their own

right they were dealt a bad hand right now let's add in technology we know that

engagement with social media and our cell phones releases a chemical called

dopamine that's why when you get a text feels good so you know we've all had it

when you're feeling a little bit down or feeling a bit lonely and so you send out

ten texts to ten friends you know hi hi hi hi hi cuz it feels good when you get

a response right, it's why we count the likes

it's why we go back ten times to see if and if it's going

my Instagram is growing slower, did I do something wrong do they not like me anymore

right the trauma for young kids to be

unfriended right because we know when you get it you get a hit of dopamine

which feels good it's why we like it it's why we keep going back

Dopamine is the exact same chemical that makes us feel good when we smoke when we drink

and when we gamble in other words it's highly highly addictive right we have

age restrictions on smoking gambling and alcohol and we have no age restrictions

on social media and cellphones which is the equivalent of opening up the liquor

cabinet and saying to our teenagers hey by the way this adolescence thing if it

gets you down, but that's basically what's happening that's basically what's

happening right that's basically what happened you have an entire generation

that has access to an addictive numbing chemical called dopamine through

social media and cellphones as they're going through the high stress of

adolescence why is this important almost every alcoholic discovered

alcohol when they were teenagers when we're very very young the only approval

we need is the approval of our parents and as we go through adolescence we make

this transition where we now need the approval of our peers very frustrating

for our parents very important for us that allows us to acculturate outside of

our immediate families into the broader tribe but it's a highly highly stressful

and anxious period of our lives and we're supposed to learn to rely on our

friends some people quite by accident discover alcohol and numbing effects of

dopamine help them cope with the stresses and anxieties of adolescence

unfortunately that becomes hardwired in their brains

and for the rest of their lives when they suffer significant stress they will

not turn to a person they will turn to the bottle, social stress financial

stress career stress that's pretty much the primary reasons why ant alcoholic drinks

what's happening is because we're allowing unfettered access to these

dopamine producing devices and media basically it's becoming hardwired and

what we're seeing is as they grow older they too many kids don't know how to

form deep meaningful relationships their words not mine

they will admit that many of their friendships are superficial they will

admit that their friends that they don't count on their friends they don't rely

on their friends they have fun with their friends but they also know that

their friends will cancel on them if something better comes along deep

meaningful relationships are not there because they never practice the skill set

and worse they don't have the coping mechanisms to deal with stress so when

significant stress starts to show up in their lives they're not turning to a

person they're turning to a device they're turning to social media they're

turning to these things which offer temporary relief we know the science is

clear we know that people who spend more time on Facebook suffer higher rates of

depression than people spend less time on Facebook alcohol is not bad too much

alcohol is bad gambling is fun too much gambling is dangerous right

there's nothing wrong with social media and cell phones it's the imbalance right

if you're sitting at dinner with your friends and you're texting somebody

who's not there that's a problem that's an addiction if you're sitting in a

meeting with people you're supposed to be listening to and speaking and you put

your phone on the table face up or face down I don't care

that sends a subconscious message to the room that you're just not that

important right that's what happens and the fact that you cannot put it away

it's because you are addicted right if you wake up and you check your phone

before you say good morning to your girlfriend boyfriend or spouse you have

an addiction and like all addiction in time it'll destroy relationships it'll

cost time and it'll cost money and it'll make your life worse

so for me the first step is just opening yourself up

to new experiences and new role models because

most of us can't see ourselves in people so then we try and fit ourselves into

the boxes that we do see and I mean there's this beautiful

quote that I've been saying it everywhere and I wish I wrote it but I didn't

so it's by a philosopher and writer named Cooley

and he said that

today I'm not what I think I am I'm not what you

think I am I am what I think you think I am I

Just let that blow your mind for a while it's so powerful I know what I think I am

I'm not what you think I am I am what I think you think I am so we live in

this perception of a perception of ourselves

hence my identity is made by what my parents think I should be my identity is

made up by what my college or university thinks I should achieve while you're

living in that bubble and that echo chamber getting to what you really want

to do is impossible because maybe that just doesn't fit and I think so many

people feel that way today that they don't fit into the current education

system they don't fit with the three or four or five careers that you're taught

exist so that process of self excavation and actualization first requires being

exposed you can't be what you can't see if I never meet a billionaire I wouldn't

want to be one because I don't know what that feels like I don't know what it

looks like I don't know what it takes and I think that's the biggest

challenge of our society that we're not exposed so that's the first step being

exposed to unique experiences and role models second step is finding that

experiencial role model that you're passionate about and exactly like you

said taking it seriously shadow them, network with them spend

time with them observe them even from afar it takes that observation being

addicted to observing that person's lifestyle and then the third step is

growing yes or no does that work for me not everyone who's gonna go out from the

camera monk is gonna feel like the way I did and that's cool but not everyone is

gonna go and follow and shadow a billionaire and go that's exactly the lifestyle I want

they may want the result but do they want the hard work that goes with it

and so for me that's the third step it's observing focusing shadowing

getting as close to the process of that individual and then going yes or no do I

want that process, not do I want the result so you have a

generation growing up with lower self-esteem that doesn't have the coping

mechanisms to deal with stress right now you adding a sense of impatience

right they've grown up in a world of instant gratification you want to buy

something you go on Amazon it arrives the next day you want to watch a movie

log on and watch your movie you don't check movie times you want to watch your

TV show binge you don't even have to wait week to week to week right

I know people who skip seasons just so they can binge at the end of the season

right instant gratification you want to go on a date you don't even have to

learn how to be like heyy!!

you don't even have to learn and practice that skill you

don't have to be the uncomfortable Say yes when you mean no, say no when you mean yes

swipe right bang

I'm a stud right

you don't have to learn the social coping mechanisms right

everything you want you can have instantaneous everything you want

instant gratification except job satisfaction and strength of

relationships there ain't no app for that they are

slow meandering uncomfortable messy processes and so I keep meeting these

wonderful fantastic idealistic hard-working smart kids that just

graduated school they're in their entry-level job I sit down with them

when I go how's it going they go think I'm gonna quit I'm like why

they're like i'm not making an impact like you've been here eight months

it's as if they're standing at the foot of a mountain and they have this abstract

concept called impact that they want to have in the world which is the summit

what they don't see is the mountain I don't care if you go up the mountain quickly

or slowly but there's still a mountain and so what this young generation needs

to learn is patience that some things that really really matter like love or

job fulfillment joy love of life self-confidence a skill set any of these

things all of these things take time sometimes you can expedite pieces of it

but the overall journey is arduous and long and difficult and if you don't ask

for help and learn that skill set you will fall off the mountain or you will

the worst case scenario the worst case scenario and we're already seeing it the

worst case scenario is we're seeing increase in suicide rates we're seeing

an increase in this generation we're seeing increase in accidental deaths due

to drug overdoses we're seeing more and more kids drop out of school or take

leaves of absence due to depression unheard of this is really bad

the best case scenario, those are all bad cases right

the best case scenario is you'll have an entire population growing up and going

through life and just never really finding joy

they'll never really find deep deep fulfilment in work they'll just

just walk through, how's your job it's fine

same as yesterday, how's relationship it's fine like that's that's the

best-case scenario which leads me to the the fourth point which is environment

which is we're taking this amazing group of young fantastic kids who were just dealt

a bad hand it's no fault of their own and we put them in corporate

environments that care more about the numbers than they do about the kids they

care more about the short-term gains than the long-term life of this young

human being we care more about the year than the lifetime right and so we are

putting them in corporate environments that aren't helping them build their

confidence that aren't helping them learn the skills of cooperation that

aren't helping them overcome the challenges of a digital world and

finding more balance that isn't helping them overcome the need to have instant

gratification and teach them the joys the impact in the fulfilment you get

from working hard on something for a long time that cannot be done in a

month or even in a year and so we're thrusting them into corporate

environments and the worst part about it is they think it's them they blame themselves

They think it's them who can't deal and so it makes it all worse

it's not I'm here to tell them it's not them it's the corporations it's

the corporate environments it's the total lack of good leadership in our

world today that is making them feel the way they did they were dealt a bad hand

I hate to say but it's the company's responsibility sucks to be you

like we have no choice right this is what we got and I wish that society and

their parents did a better job they didn't so we're gonna we're getting them

in our companies and we now have to pick up the slack we have to work extra hard

to figure out the ways that we build their confidence we have to work extra

hard to find ways to teach them the social skills that they're missing out on

there should be no cell phones

in conference rooms none, zero and I don't mean the kind of like sitting outside

waiting to text I mean like when you're sitting and waiting for a meeting to

start nobody goes this is what we'll do we all sit here and wait for the meeting

to start Meeting starting okay we start the meeting no that's not how

relationships are formed remember we talked about it's the little things

relationships are formed this way we're waiting for

meeting to start we go how's your dad i heard he was in hospital oh he's really

good thanks for asking he's actually at home now, oh i'm really glad

it was really amazing I know it was really scary for me that's how you form

relationships hey did you ever get that report, oh my god no I didn't

I totally forgot, can I help you out, really

that's how trust forms trust doesn't form at an event in a day even bad times

don't form trust immediately it's the slow steady consistency and we have to

create mechanisms where we allow for those little innocuous interactions to

happen but when we allow cell phones in conference rooms we just okay I have the

meeting and then my favorite is like when there's a cell phone there you go

like this you go, it rings and go I'm not gonna answer that mr. magnanimous

when you're out for dinner with your friends like I do this with my

friends when we're going out for dinner and we're leaving together we'll leave

our cell phones at home who are we calling maybe one of us will bring a

phone in case we need to call an uber or take a picture of our meal

we'll take one phone and so it's like an alcoholic the reason you take the

alcohol out of the house is because we cannot trust our willpower

we're just not strong enough but when you remove the temptation it actually

makes it a lot easier and so when you just say don't check your phone people

literally will go like this and somebody would go to the bathroom and what's the

first thing we do, "Check the Phone" because I wouldn't want to look around the restaurant for a

minute and a half you know but if you don't have the phone you just kind of

enjoy the world and that's where ideas happen

the constant constant constant engagement is not where you have

innovation and ideas ideas happen when our mind's wandering you see something

and you go I think i can do that, that's called innovation

right but we're taking away all those little moments right

None of us none of us should charge our phones by our beds we

should be charging our phones in the living rooms right remove the temptation

you wake up in the middle of night cuz you can't sleep you won't check your phone

which makes it worse but if it's in the living room its relaxed it's fine oh

yeah but it's my alarm clock

buy an alarm clock, they cost $8

so my hope would be that we begin to live life as an incredible

mystery and treasure and that therefore no matter what happens we can approach

each day that way and for me the key to that is approaching each day in a

fresh way it's like without carrying yesterday or last year or old

resentments or angers of course this is much harder to achieve than to talk

about but if we have that as a goal then it affects very much the decisions we make

A little help here!

Sonny!

I'm on the way, Tag.

Miles, you there?

I'm reading you. Take a left up ahead. That'll bring you straight to him.

*Laughs*

Hey, you hear that grinding metal sound? That's not a good sound!

Comin' right up! Hang in there.

Sure. Take your time. No rush.

Get ready to jump.

I've been ready for 10 minutes--

Now!

Yeah! I told you that would work!

This is never going to work.

Well, like it or not, it's our only shot.

We go down, we go down swinging.

Now all I have to do is convince them.

Yeah, don't mess that up.

A comfort as always Miles.

Alright. We're all here like you asked.

What's up?

And why are we all in my room?

Is this room secure?

Of course it's secure.

That's Meelo-speak for "Come in. Make yourself at home."

I found out some things last night-- and it's gonna sound crazy but you have to believe me.

You are 3 of the best drivers in the world.

But unless Kings says so, none of you will ever win a single race.

The RIMBA Grand Prix is rigged, and it always has been.

As we move into the final phase of the season I must congratulate you all.

Each of you has performed admirably.

You understand that for the RGP to work, there needs to be a place for everyone,

and everyone in their place.

We each play our roles.

Some are brutes.

Others are winners.

And some remain... a mystery.

So you're saying this is all some grand conspiracy?

Would King really be a part of all this?

I've known King for a long time.

I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with it.

And what about Tamira? She wouldn't cheat.

A month ago she was struggling to pay for spare parts.

Now she's got sponsors lined up.

So now you're saying the sponsors are involved?

Sponsors love winners.

You control the race, you control the winner.

You control the winner...

...you control the sponsors. You control the sponsors...

...you control everything.

I've had my suspicions but... nothing like this.

King always makes sure the right racer wins at the right time.

This isn't a sport anymore.

It's a puppet show. And King's pulling the strings.

I can hear the voices bubbling up in your heads.

Voices that whisper things like "cheat" and "liar."

Ignore them. You're better than that.

You see the RGP for what it is. Opportunity to change your lives for the better.

You can't leave that to chance. That would be foolish.

Here at the RGP, we're in control.

You have chosen to put your trust in me and I will not fail you.

Just do what is asked of you and everything you desire will be yours.

So, why are you telling us?

Because Miles and I are going to take them on.

We're going to bring King's little empire crashing down around him.

And we could use some help.

If the sponsors are happy, then King is happy.

And if King is happy, then you're all happy.

So my final words of advice are simple: keep King happy.

No worries, mate. You can count on us.

So you're suggesting the 5 of us take down one of the richest and most powerful businessmen in the world.

Could be fun.

Considering you're all doomed without my help... why not?

Excellent! Operation Tag-Team is a go!

-Oy. -Interesting.

That's it. I'm out.

Dude, we are not calling it that.

Krom and Wrecks are the muscle.

We deal with them, the odds get more even.

Doesn't matter how even things get if Tamira and Axle get a clear shot to the finish line.

So we have to deal with King's whole team all at once.

The one thing we've got going for us is that King doesn't know about Sonny, Meika and Meelo.

He just thinks it's you and me.

That's weird... Becks and Beaks are on.

You know anything about this?

Welcome back race fans to this special edition of the Becks and Beaks show.

We're here with an exclusive announcement.

Exclusive!

And maybe even a surprise or 2.

Firstly, it's confirmed that the Dragonfly Swamp will be the site of the next RGP race.

It'll be a tough and grueling off-road course for our racers this week.

Our racers will have to go down these bumpy dirt roads straight into the heart of Dragonfly Swamp.

Here, our racers will have to cut their way through this thick, jungle maze

and somehow find the path to the finish line.

Finish!

And that's not all.

Here with our surprise announcement is the man himself, King!

Thanks guys! Now everyone knows our racers are capable of legendary individual achievement.

But how will they fare when forced to work together?

For one race only, our racers will be split into 2 teams.

Every member of a team must cross the finish line in order to gain points.

Wow, that's quite a curve you're throwing.

We like to keep things interesting.

So how were the teams chosen?

Oh, it's completely random.

As you know Cuckoo and Ooaa were injured in the last race so they won't be participating this week.

The rest of the racers were divided by lottery as follows.

Axle, Tamira, Krom and Wrecks are on one team.

Tag, Sonny, Meika and Meelo are on the other.

So there you have it folks.

2 teams, winners take all, losers get--

Zero!

Precisely!

Random selection my foot!

King knows.

Of course King knows. But how? That's the question.

So what do we do? Back off?

No.

King's calling us out on live TV because he thinks he controls all the angles.

He doesn't see us as a threat.

So I say we prove to him that we are.

I say we get on that track, win the race and leave his team choking on our dust.

You mean mud.

It's a swamp. So technically... more mud than dust.

Glad we got that sorted out. And here I was worried for a second.

You've gone too far this time.

No such thing, old friend.

Then take your best shot. And we'll take ours.

I admire your confidence. Misplaced as it is.

I look forward to teaching you otherwise.

And here I thought it was all for love of the game.

Oh, Miles. Always so high and mighty.

Tell me, how much does Tag know about your role in his father's "accident"?

The official report reads "driver error" but we both know better, don't we?

And Miles?

You have no idea how far I'm willing to go.

I believe this is yours.

Nice bug. Good design.

But you're way out of your league, old man.

Communicators.

Completely separate from the RGP network so King won't be able to listen in.

Fantastic.

Tag! I've got the track layout.

Be right there.

Nice work, Meelo.

Miles?

Miles!

Umm, what?

You okay?

I'm fine. Just... nervous about the race.

That makes 2 of us.

Hey, Meelo needs a hand. Could you--

On it.

Tag.

Nothing. Forget it.

You sure you're okay?

Fine. Just the prospect of working with Meelo. Terrifying.

I'm right here. I can hear you.

Sonny needs to bring up the rear. If I'm in front that means--

No. It's too dangerous, Meika.

Everything about this is too dangerous. That's what makes it fun.

I'm just trying to figure out how to give us a boost.

Just an extra second of speed could make the difference here.

These are... good.

Try not to sound so surprised when you say that.

Unlike most drivers, I think you actually might have more between your ears than just tiny rocks.

Thank you... I think.

This could work.

Have you thought about connecting to the manifold?

That's brilliant!

I guess you're more than just a crazy old man with rage issues.

See? It's not so funny when someone else does it, is it?

No matter how we slice it, we still end up with the same problem.

Tamira and Axle are too fast. Krom and Wrecks are too tough.

But what if...

Tag?

That's it. Tag team!

Not this again.

Did we break him?

No, no, no. Don't you see?

We can't take them on individually. So we don't.

We do what we're supposed to do. Work as a team.

We shift positions. Rotate in and out as needed.

We play... tag.

And that's the plan. Congratulations Tamira.

You get your first RGP win this season.

Anything to add?

No, it's fine.

Uh, Mr. King?

Yes, Wrecks?

I don't know about this.

I mean, playing rough is one thing but this--

Oh loosen up. We got this, boss.

No, no Krom. Wrecks's feelings are understandable.

But Tag needs to learn his lesson.

It's regrettable but for the greater good.

Are we clear?

Crystal.

What a display of teamwork from Tag and Sonny.

I haven't seen something like this since...

Well I've never seen anything like this!

Nothing!

Here's how things stand now.

Tamira and Axle are in the lead having pulled ahead

while Krom and Wrecks tried to slow down the competition.

Obviously that didn't work.

It looks like Tag and the rest of his team are catching up.

Yeaah! I told you that would work!

There's a lot of track left to go. Don't get cocky.

Have a little faith, Miles.

Is he always like this?

This is actually one his sunnier days.

That's so sad.

I'm actually with Miles on this one.

Thank you Meelo.

At least there's one professional on this team.

Okay. I don't know when you 2 started getting along, but I don't like it one bit.

Axle. Tamira. Take the next right.

Turn right?

That's solid jungle.

Actually, it's an unmarked path that cuts through to the finish line.

But thanks for the input.

The fog's pretty thick here. Watch yourselves.

Guys, we got a problem.

Track's out.

Where's the bridge?

Miles, is there any way around this?

No need.

Watch and learn.

Coming guys?

Meelo, I could kiss you!

That goes for all of us!

Would not go that far.

My my, a definite "A" for effort.

But now it's getting irritating.

Krom. Wrecks. Are you in position?

Yes sir.

Do it.

There they are!

I don't see Krom or Wrecks anywhere.

We don't even have to overtake them.

When the four of us cross the finish line together, we win.

I think those 2 might have something to say about it.

Guys, behind us!

Well, well. Look who's catching up.

So let's deal with them.

Meelo, Sonny, catch up with Tamira and Axle.

Try to slow them down. Meika, care to join me?

I thought you'd never ask.

You ready?

I got your back.

Meika. Anytime now.

Firing... now!

It's not working. Miles, what's going on?

I don't know. System reads 5 by 5.

Guys!

Guys, I need--

Tag!

Tag, answer me!

Huh?

Are you okay?!

I'm fine. Just take one of them out!

That's the only shot we've got left.

Well, this isn't good.

If these 4 make it over the finish line-- Wait, something's not right.

We're in position, sir.

Proceed.

Argh!

I'm coming Sonny.

Argh!

Take him off the track.

Sir, we've already won. Can't we just--

Just do it!

I got this!

Axle! Tee him up.

Oww... my head.

Huh?

Sonny! --Sonny's down!

Miles! I heard a crash. What happened?

Miles? Talk to me! What's going on?

Talk to me! Somebody answer me! Miles!

You're going to be fine, Sonny.

You hear me? You're going to be fine.

Sorry ma'am. Medical personnel only.

It... it shouldn't have been him.

I know.

What a finish to the Sandbox Off-Road Extravaganza.

It's Sonny pulling off a last-minute miracle win.

Win!

Good point Beaks.

The last few weeks have seen 4 racers leaping up the ranks: Sonny, Meika, Meelo and Tag.

What do you think? Is it just coincidence or are we seeing the beginnings of a new alliance here.

Beginnings!

Bold words, Beaks.

Can this new alliance survive the Jungle Jim Invitational?

Join us next week to find out. It's sure to be a barn burner!

But you didn't win!

That wasn't the deal.

I just said YOU wouldn't win.

I'm going to need to go the judges on this one.

Hmm. I'll allow it.

I'm with her.

Don't be like that. I think you look very nice.

Really?

*Giggles*

No, you look ridiculous, babe.

I hate you all.

We know.

Come on, Meelo.

We all know you probably had something much worse planned for me if I lost.

You have no idea.

But, it's over now. So let's put it behind us.

We will. Starting now.

*Laughs*

Okay, starting now.

Wait. Didn't we agree it'd be for a whole week--

Tag. Mr. King would like to see you now.

Can it wait?

So... right now then.

I know what you're doing.

And that cold, laser ice queen stare doesn't phase me one bit.

But let's go see Mr. King now.

This is completely unacceptable.

Axle.

I won't stand for this.

You stand for what I tell you to stand.

That's how this works.

*Cough*

Tag. Glad you could make it. If you'll excuse us, Axle.

You like all these?

Prototypes for our "Get Tagged" campaign.

The get what campaign?

Marketing's working on the name.

I just wanted to congratulate you on all the success you've had lately.

Research tells me you're the most popular rookie we've had in a decade.

Really? Wow.

And here at RIMBA, we reward success.

There's a group of racers we like to pay special attention to.

Sort of the best of the best.

We make sure they're stocked with spare parts.

Give them good positioning on the track.

Basically make sure they're living up to their potential.

What do you say, Tag? You wanna join my team?

I'm not sure but, uh, I'm willing to listen.

That filthy, 2-faced-- King said all of this? Right to your face?!

I knew it. He's turned RIMBA into a scam. It's one big con.

He's corrupted this entire sport, turned good racers into cheats and now he wants us to join him.

I wouldn't go that far--

I would have loved to have been there.

To have seen the look on his face when you turned him down.

You did turn him down, Tag?

I said I'd think about it.

Tag!

Just listen. It's a good deal. I mean, it's an amazing deal.

It's cheating!

It's not cheating!

King would just give us some extra money so we can maintain the car and we'd get preferential

treatment on the track and occasionally have to do favours for-- okay, it's cheating.

We'd be set for life, Miles. You and me.

We'd never have to go back to that broken-down garage in that broken-down neighborhood.

We'd be rich and famous and...

Why, thank you Meelo.

This is insulting.

Excuse me. Less talking from the help please.

Arrgh! I hate this uniform!

Hey, that cost money!

Woah. What about the deal?

I hate the deal!

It was your idea! What was it-- one week of humiliation?

Tag?

What? Yeah. One week.

But, you know, forget about it. It's okay, Meelo.

I knew there was a reason I always liked him.

"Always liked him." Are you serious?

I like everybody.

That's why I have a reputation for sweetness and light.

You hated Tag!

You hated us too when we joined up.

I did not!

What did he say to us on our first day?

"I'm going to beat you both like a jungle drum."

Jungle drum!

I came really fast to that turn--

And there was that car, and it was so fast and--

No.

The answer is--

--No!

So you... don't want pizza?

Sorry. There's someplace I've gotta be.

I still don't like him.

Tag, my boy, good to see you. Shall we get down to brass tacks?

Now, as part of my team you would need to--

Mr. King.

I've thought things through. And your offer is very generous.

But I'm going to have to say no.

May I ask why?

I understand this is a business and it's about making money, but to me it's a sport I love.

And it means too much to me to cheat.

Whatever happens, win or lose, I want it to be honest.

You don't seem to understand--

I do understand--

Do not interrupt me again!

I don't make this offer to just anyone.

And once the offer is made, no one turns me down.

I told you about the benefits of joining up.

I did not, however, mention the consequences of doing otherwise.

Are you threatening me?

Of course not. People like me don't need to threaten.

If you'll excuse me, I've got a race to win.

It's a setback.

Nothing more.

Really?

He'll come around. You did.

Yes sir.

It's time our young friend realized who's in charge around here.

No matter what, Tag does not finish the race tomorrow.

Yes sir.

Everything is under control.

Welcome back to the Jungle Jim Invitational.

So far, it's been Tag and Axle all the way.

Axle, who's been on a bit of a cold streak lately,

hasn't finished higher than 3rd in the last 4 races,

while Tag, the rookie, is on a hot streak; coming off a win and a 2nd place finish.

Both men not giving an inch. What do you think, Beaks?

Can the veteran pull off a much needed victory?

Both!

Way to commit, buddy.

Tag needs to somehow get out of this or it's lights out for the rookie.

Come on, come on, come on!

Krom.

Pull back.

Miles, are you seeing this?

Mouth. Gift horse. Stop looking.

Now get back in the race!

And there goes Tag with the Thunder Pounce.

I had him, King!

I just want to see if she can follow orders.

Woah!

Tamira's looking to make her own mark on this race.

Tamira, not wasting any time, goes into Shadow Drift mode and takes the lead!

Stop playing games, Tamira. Finish him off.

Oh no!

Oh no! Aaarghhhh!

Tag! Tag, you okay? Talk to me.

Sure, let's go with okay.

A close call for Tag.

Looks like he's not finishing this race but things could have gone much, much worse.

And it looks like Axle has just crossed the finish line with Tamira right behind him for 2nd place.

What's the matter? Can't even look me in the eye?

So all those times you were telling me that I didn't have what it took, is this what you meant?

That I don't have it in me to be a coward and a cheat?

You don't understand.

I'm sorry. Did King's pet pussy cat say something?

You don't understand!

I understand more than you think.

King!

Get your hands off of me!

King!

It's okay boys. Let him go.

Tough race today.

So this is how it's going to be?

You get mad so you get your goons to do your dirty work?

Mad? Tag I don't give you enough thought to be mad at you.

You are just a tiny cog in the machine that is the RIMBA Grand Prix.

I can use you, or I can just as easily replace you.

It's your choice.

Join my team, or I'll make sure you never finish another race for the rest of the season.

Which, incidentally, means you don't qualify for next year.

And soon, you'll just be another broken down ex-racer

who looks like somebody who used to be famous.

I'm going to go on Becks and Beaks. Exclusive interview.

Blow the whistle on everything you've done.

You're just an upstart rookie from the slums.

I'm King, the kindly old grandfather of the game.

Who do you think they'll believe?

Losing isn't the worst thing that can happen.

It's dangerous out there on the track.

People get hurt. Just ask Miles.

Kids nowadays.

So what do we do now?

King's not wrong.

He's got the money, the power and he's coming for us.

I'm not giving in.

Then neither am I.

Things are going to get really bad from this point out.

We're going to need help.

I know.

Can you trust them?

We're about to find out.

Tag, what happened out there today?

I thought you were a goner on that bridge.

Guys...

we need to talk.

That's how he's beating you.

Good tip.

Thanks Meelo.

Despite your pathetic attempts to help me out, I... at least, appreciate the thought.

No one's ever stood up for me before.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

I trust this will prove... useful.

Is that--

Every scrap of footage from every one of Axle's races for the last 5 years?

Yes, it is.

I'll get the popcorn.

Of course, she believed me.

Because that's what I do.

Like that whole business when Tag was attacked.

If people actually knew we have no idea who attacked him,

the damage to the RGP's reputation would be unimaginable.

People believe what I tell them to believe.

That's why you hired me.

There's room for one more on the team.

Welcome to the Brain Coffee Podcast, where Doctors Eric Leuthardt and Albert Kim unlock

life's little mysteries about health, wellness, entertainment, technology and how the brain

makes sense of it all.

Sit back, relax and open up your mind.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Well, David, thanks for joining us at Brain Coffee.

Dr. Albert Kim: Thank you very much, yeah.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: It's usually just the two of us king of

yammering away.

But again, it's a real pleasure to basically have you here given your busy schedule and

all the research that you do.

So thanks very much.

Dr. Albert Kim: Yeah, thank you.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: This is such a nice local place.

This is awesome.

Dr. Albert Kim: It is a good place.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Well definitely, you know, the kolaches.

Don't forget to get a kolache before you go.

Dr. Albert Kim: They're good here.

They're filling.

So why don't we, no please.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: You're obviously a expert, you know, really

one of the world-renowned experts in Alzheimer's.

At the highest level, could you give the briefest summary of kind of, you know, where you think

we are today when we think about Alzheimer's?

Dr. Albert Kim: Yeah, the lay of the land.

I think that would be useful.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: You know, I think there's been sort of a

revolution in our understanding about Alzheimer's in the last 20 years, especially the last

10.

We used to think of it as when people began to develop memory loss and other changes,

that that was the disease.

And of course, those are the manifestations of the disease, but it turns out, I think

the biggest thing which is really important for developing treatments, is that the disease

starts in the brain about 20 years before the symptoms start.

Dr. Albert Kim: Wow.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: And because of that, I mean, that, and we

can now detect those changes as they're occurring with different tests.

And So I think it's setting the stage where now there are actually trials of new treatments

in people that are normal, cognitively normal, who have the manifestations of the disease

in the brain, so that we can actually try to delay the disease or prevent it.

And that, that's really huge.

Now there's nothing yet that we have that's approved, but I think that's where really

things are moving.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: So what are the things that you can see 20

years before anything clinical happens?

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: The first things we can see at least by some

imaging techniques and by looking at the spinal fluid, is that amyloid.

This protein that normally is made by all of us, which is floating around.

It starts to clump up.

And you can see that beginning about 20 years before symptoms.

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: It starts to build up.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Now this amyloid protein, is it, I'm again,

you know more about this than I do, but amyloid is really kind of almost like the output of

like neurons being busy, right?

Like, so as neurons are active, they produce amyloid naturally, right?

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: They produce it naturally, except it's in

a state where it's just freely soluble, meaning it's like dissolving sugar in your

coffee.

It dissolves, right?

But when the disease starts, it comes out of solution and clumps up.

And so it's a different conformation of—

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: It's totally; same sequence, but a different

conformation.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Very interesting.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: My causal way of thinking about it, I kind

of think of it as neuron poop.

You know what I mean?

Like, you know, and basically that like, basically your neurons poop.

They poop out the amyloid.

And just, you know, for whatever reason, you can't flush the toilet anymore.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: And then the toilet gets stuck and you can't

clear it out.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Exactly.

It gets kind of stinky.

Dr. Albert Kim: But the poop is different, you're saying.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Right, the poop changing.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: Right, right.

Dr. Albert Kim: It's not that normal poop.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: Right, right, that's right.

It's a little different.

Dr. Albert Kim: Do you see this in other disorders?

This stuff glomming up the brain?

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: The same amyloid protein builds up in Alzheimer's

disease.

But it also accumulates in a related condition where it builds up in the blood vessels.

Amyloid angiopathy.

Dr. Albert Kim: Right, right, right.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: And that is a, you guys see in your practices.

I mean, it causes hemorrhages.

(CROSS-TALK)

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: But there are other amyloids, other sequences

of proteins that form what we call an amyloid structure, that also affect brain.

They're less common.

And, of course, this occurs, amyloidosis occurs systemically, this systemic amyloidosis.

And that is where things build up in the heart or the kidney, right?

And that, those are pretty common.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: That's interesting.

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: Sometimes in the nerve.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Is there a relationship between amyloid and

depression?

Because I've recently heard that people are starting to treat Alzheimer's with antidepressant

drugs.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: There's sort of two things with depression.

One is that a fair number of people will begin to develop depression as their first manifestation

of disease.

Dr. Albert Kim: Oh, I see.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: That's one thing.

But, the other thing that's been found by people at Wash U actually, is that some antidepressants

lower the production of amyloid in the brain.

Dr. Albert Kim: Oh, that's interesting.

So it might, it might get at the cause of it as well, to some extent.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: Correct, right.

So one of the main treatments being developed are things that inhibit the production of

amyloid in a very specific way.

What turns out, some antidepressants do the same thing.

Not as strong as a specific inhibitor, but.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Oh, that's really interesting.

Now, but again, amyloid is, you know, again, I think we've been totally interrupting

him.

We should probably let the expert speak.

Dr. Albert Kim: Oh, yeah, oh no, apologize.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: But you know, amyloid is I guess, one part

of the protein story, right?

Like you know, I guess there's also Tau.

And everybody loves to talk about Tau as it relates to sports injuries and stuff like

that.

Dr. Albert Kim: Right, right, CTE.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: One way, I've heard a lot of people give

the analogy that amyloid kind of is the, is the gun of Alzheimer's disease.

It starts the whole thing.

And that Tau is the bullet that actually is causing the damage.

And I think there's a lot of, there's strong evidence that that's the case.

Now that we have neuroimaging that you can see Tau accumulating, in the last two, three

years, we've been able to see that as, wherever Tau is building up the poop of the brain.

Another kind of poop.

Wherever Tau is accumulating, that's where the symptoms are.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Uh-huh.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: So if it starts in the part of the brain that

controls memory, you get memory loss.

As it spreads to other areas that affect language, then you get language abnormalities.

It's really, really compelling.

Dr. Albert Kim: Wow.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: And the brain shrinks in the areas that Tau

accumulates.

So it really is the damaging molecule of the disease.

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

It's the most, well, what's the relationship between the beta amyloid and the Tau then?

How do they communicate with each other?

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: So there's two things.

One is that, we know from lots of studies, that amyloid causes the Tau pathology to get

a lot worse.

It drives it.

What we don't know is, how it does that.

So a lot of researchers are now trying to figure out how is amyloid interacting with

Tau.

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Maybe even a bigger blue sky question is,

let's say we can reduce beta amyloid, once the damage is done, is it reversible?

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: No one knows.

I hope, I hope it is, but I think it's much more realistic to think if you hit it before

the damage is done, that that's where you're really going to have a big impact.

This is like, I think of a lot like atherosclerosis.

Huge decreases in heart attacks and strokes because now our choles-, we can lower our

cholesterol, we can control our blood pressure.

And we have markers.

You know, you measure your cholesterol.

If it's too high, you get on a statin or you exercise more or you do other things.

Same thing I think will be for this.

I don't think, you know, we're going to probably have to diagnose it before you're

symptomatic, and start getting on the treatments that, you know, prevent the build-up from

getting worse.

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

This is just my sci-fi mind going into overdrive.

You know, there's these researchers, again, in the brain-computer interface space making

what are called hippocampal chips.

Have you heard about these things?

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: No, no, no I haven't heard of those.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: So at USC, they now have a replacement for

a mouse hippocampus, where basically, quite literally, you put this, you put the wires

and they remove a portion of the hippocampus.

They put wires in one side and wires in the other side.

And they have the signals go to this chip.

And then basically, it allows for restoration of memories for that—

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: Oh, wow.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: For that mouse.

Dr. Albert Kim: Oh, that's interesting.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: It's this guy, Ted Berger.

And he really does some amazing stuff.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: That's a cool idea.

Because you'd think higher order processing is not through the hippocampus.

That's just, it's just a conduit to allow things like memory to happen, other things.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: That's right, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: So if you could replace that conduit.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt: Yeah, so there is; and they have these mouse

demonstrations that it's possible.

So that's why I was just going to just--

Dr. Albert Kim: That's interesting.

But the hippocampus is one of the parts of the brain earliest affected, one of the earliest

affected.

Dr. David Michael Holtzman: It's one of the earlier affected areas.

But one of the things I always like to, when I see patients who have, are developing Alzheimer's

disease, memory is not the only thing affected.

So it is certainly prominent early, but it's not the only thing.

Even early on, you'll almost always see executive disfunction.

So trouble would be like, multitasking issues.

But yeah, no, it is certainly a prominent early, early finding.

Dr. Albert Kim: I see.

Today, we've got a special guest with us in the studio.

Ladies and gentlemen...

Tag!

Uh... hi.

Hi!

Riveting television, folks.

But Tag, congratulations are in order.

I hear you scored your first endorsement.

Uh-- what?

Endorsement!

Let's roll it!

Go!

Yee-Haw!

Jump Jump! Power Drink!

What the--

Back to Tag in a minute-- but first, a word from our sponsors.

Be right back.

It wasn't that bad.

Are you kidding me?

It was so bad that badness itself pales in comparison to the bad of that ad.

Why are you rhyming?

Because it was that bad!

I'm supposed to be a professional racer,

not a jumped up cartoon!

It was one dumb ad on an even dumber show.

I bet no one even noticed.

*Everyone laughing*

Well, that was predictable.

*Laughing*

*Giggling*

Sit down, cowboy!

Where'd Miles go?

Away from here. He's not a big fan of, uh-- well, people.

And how's fame and fortune treating you?

I had nothing to do with that.

Of course not. It's part of your RGP contract.

You signed away your likeness rights.

That means,

you are now a copyrighted character owned in perpetuity by the RIMBA Grand Prix:

heck, you might even be on a cereal box soon.

That's how the game is played, pal.

Of course. No one is more upset about this than I am.

Unacceptable.

Most definitely.

Which is why I plan to investigate this incident thoroughly.

Did Tag's attacker show up on the surveillance cameras?

Um, no.

We don't have cameras in the garages. Privacy protocols.

So what you're saying Mr. King,

is that you don't know what happened, and you don't know who's responsible.

What I'm saying is I will find out who attacked Tag, and he will be dealt with.

On that you have my word.

For what it's worth.

If you would all excuse me, I need to speak privately with Chief Miles.

Come on, old friend.

Surely you can't be blaming me for this.

I'm not blaming anybody, King.

But something stinks around here.

The Ripper's fine, Miles.

Just trying to get his attention.

Well, it worked. Wait... why is this a good thing?

Because I'm making a point, Miles.

Not real. Not real.

Okay, that's real!

Welcome to my bad side!

So you think Krom was the one who attacked you?

He's a likely suspect.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a race to get back to.

And here I thought you forgot.

Wait a minute.

I came in. Tag was on the ground.

And next to him was...

Was...

It was a Kurgen wrench.

Tag! Tag, can you hear me?

Tag! Slow down!

Slow down?

Yes! The attack wasn't about you. That was just a distraction.

You're not making any sense!

They sabotaged the Ripper, Tag. The car is rigged!

He knocked you out with the Kurgen wrench.

That's used for just one thing, the coolant system.

If it's damaged, at a certain speed the engine will overheat and--

And what?

Well, explode.

How fast can I push it?

No more than 80.

Hold on. I'm figuring out how you can fix this.

Me? I just drive. You do all the tech stuff.

Unless you want to get out and push, I think it's time to expand your skill set.

Okay. Right beneath your left foot is a panel. You see it?

Yeah.

Open it.

Now, you need to disconnect the breakers from the coolant controls.

Miles, pretend you're talking to a 6 year old.

Pull out the green and black wires.

Do not, I repeat, do not disconnect any of the other wires. You hear me?

*Laughs*

Speed! Watch your speed!

I know!

You did it! Coolant is back online!

Woohoo!

Huh?

Everything's fine, Miles. Looks like the worst is over.

Okay... shutting up now.

Tag, check your fuel.

Wrecks must have punctured the fuel tank.

You're leaving a trail of fuel behind you.

So?

A trail of fuel? Next to the really hot pools of lava?

Lava, definitely real.

What are you doing? Bail out!

Not yet. I got an idea.

Miles? I'm okay. How'd we do?

7th place.

Beats dying.

It does at that.

Took a bit of a pounding today, didn't you?

Nothing we can't fix, Mr. King.

Good to hear.

Oh, we found out who attacked you.

Really?

One of our janitors has a bit of a gambling problem.

Put all his money on Tag pulling out of the race.

He's been dealt with, so that's over.

That's good to know. Thank you.

Well, well Mad Miles.

Looks like you owe Meelo a big "I'm sorry."

Flowers are good for that, I hear.

I'll get right on that.

Right after you apologize to Krom.

It didn't work. I couldn't get rid of him.

Yeah. Looks like Tag's here to stay.

Welcome to the Brain Coffee Podcast, where Doctors Eric Leuthardt and Albert Kim unlock

life's little mysteries about health, wellness, entertainment, technology and how the brain

makes sense of it all.

Sit back, relax and open up your mind.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt You said you gave your daughter how much for

the Tooth Fairy?

Dr. Albert Kim Oh, yeah.

So second tooth in two weeks came out and she put it under her pillow.

She has to wash it.

And if I don't fall asleep and forget, the put a like a dollar for each tooth.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt A dollar?

That's not bad.

Is that the going rate?

Actually, my daughter hasn't lost any teeth yet, so…

Dr. Albert Kim I see.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt So she believes in the tooth fairy.

Dr. Albert Kim She does.

It's funny.

She gives multiple lines of evidence as to why he or she must exist.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Oh, interest-, what is the evidence?

Dr. Albert Kim Like for instance, she doesn't, she looks

at the handwriting and the notes of the tooth fairy, you know, the tooth fairy.

And she doesn't think that either myself or her mom can write like that.

There's no way that, some kind of like writing-based logic.

And then also the pictures that are in the notes.

She doesn't think that either of us could draw those.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt My daughter's much more dubious.

Now she hasn't dealt with the tooth fairy, but with Santa, I think she believes in Santa,

but I'm not so sure, because we were just having a conversation last night and she said,

you know, well, Daddy, where'd you hide all the presents?

I was like well, Santa brings them.

She's like, Daddy, where do you hide all the presents?

I was kind of dancing around it.

Dr. Albert Kim Precocious.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Maybe a little bit.

But I guess the question is, I think there's actually a fundamental interesting developmental

element.

Like believing in something bigger.

Is there actually a neuroscience to that?

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, I mean, that's really interesting.

Maybe it's development of your world view.

Maybe it's development of morality.

I was actually thinking.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think humans are hard wired to believe in

stuff beyond the physical world they experience.

You know?

And again, whether it's religion, whether it's Santa, whether it's.

And again, it's not diminishing any of those or saying they're fictitious.

They're an important part of kind of how we engage with our world to have a larger

view beyond just the physical stuff that we interact with.

Dr. Albert Kim Why is it at a certain point, you know, certainly

by the time kids are usually teens that these constructs disappear?

Why, you know?

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think you take on more mature larger world.

Maybe that's where kind of like things such as ethics, such as vision for kind of things

that could be take on a larger role.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, that's true.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt For instance, imagine if we as humans, were

just purely concrete.

We'd still be like banging rocks together.

You know what I mean?

Dr. Albert Kim Right, we wouldn't get together and build

things with larger meaning.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Because we couldn't have a vision for them.

So I think there's something intrinsic.

Even though we see it kind of as cute and endearing, like our daughters like Santa Claus

or the Tooth Fairy, and we like to promote those; and sometimes people say, well, should

we?

We're lying to them.

Is that: but actually, I think it's a part of kind of like larger world view beyond your

physical reality that actually promotes kind of big picture thinking.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, I agree, I agree.

I mean, I do think though that there's an element of morality, at least in the Santa

part, too.

You know, naughty and nice.

They think, at least the developmental psychologists, they think kids morality develops somewhere

around two or three, which is usually when like a second child shows up.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Right, right, which is good.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, so that's sort of the reason they

give for morality starting then.

At two or three you're physically able to hurt them without knowing.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Right, right, right.

Dr. Albert Kim And so morality kicks in.

I think, so the Santa view of the world also helps them to develop that and maybe you need

to see the simple good and bad view to develop that sense also, early on.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think that certainly for kids, things tend

to be more black and white and binary.

And then as we get older, it becomes much more nuanced.

And when we become adults, everything's gray these day, you know.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, right, right.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think the other thing that's interesting

is that a lot of motifs for how we see kind of the larger world really does transcend

culture.

There's a, there's an anthropologist, his name's Joseph Campbell.

And he talks about how kind of if you look at, for instance, religious icons or religious

motifs or mythology, that there's a lot of similarities between a lot of different

religions and a lot of different cultures.

You know, whether it be ranging from resurrection type of motifs that we see in Christianity

and a lot of other ones.

Or kind of there's like mother motifs; I can't even remember all of them.

But for instance, that he cites "Star Wars" as being a really important one, and that's

why it's kind of fundamental and that in some senses it taps into some of these, a

lot of these motifs that we have seen throughout history.

Like the old wise man in Yoda, right?

Dr. Albert Kim Right, right.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt The young man searching for meaning, which

is Luke Skywalker.

You know, the father/son conflicts between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

And like these motifs run deep, whether it's our DNA or our mind or our culture, but they

definitely run deep.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, no, I agree.

I actually think the commonality of it, that probably suggests some kind of structural

basis.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Absolutely.

Dr. Albert Kim I mean, the way our brains are developed,

the way human brains are developed, that leads to this commonality and these things that

you're talking about.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I absolutely think that's right.

I absolutely think that's right.

Dr. Albert Kim That's probably true.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt And that we are kind of predisposed to having

kind of certain penchants for belief systems or structures of it.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, I agree, I agree.

But just like from a practical standpoint, like back to Santa, I was just talking to

mine, I was asking her if she believed in Santa the other day and before she answered,

I said, you know what?

Actually, it's probably in your benefit if you just say, whether or not you do, whether

or not he exists, if you keep on saying he does.

Two presents, you know, instead of just one.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt That actually makes me think of Pascal's

Wager.

Pascal's Wager, again, he was a French philosopher, and he basically said, hey look, regardless

of whether you believe or don't believe in a god, it's in your best interest to

believe anyway.

Dr. Albert Kim Right.

You don't lose out if you believe in it.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt You don't lose out.

But if you don't believe, you know, like, and you're wrong, then you're hosed.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah.

So our kids should take Pascal's Wager in terms of Santa.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt So they're basically taking Pascal's Wager

when it comes to Santa.

If the time for winning really is your bag...

He's still singing that? -Then the dude you need to root for, his name is Tag!

We have a problem.

Huh?

No! No problems. Not today.

Come on Miles, we just won our first race.

I've got this shiny trophy here.

Can't you just relax for one minute and enjoy it?

We're out of money.

What do we need money for?

Parts. Spare parts. New parts.

Replacement parts... so your car can, I don't know, work!

Would it be wrong of me to hope that some of these parts are invisible?

We got the standard repair kit when we signed with RIMBA.

We've burned through that and most of our signing bonus.

In 3 races? What happened?

Okay... my bad.

And to top if all off...

I didn't know they handed out trophies for individual races.

Funny story this.

Please tell me you didn't just spend what little money we do have on making a fake trophy for yourself.

Not just for me. For us.

Tag!

Miles... relax.

It's a tough business, isn't it Tamira? Especially for an independent-minded girl like yourself.

If I recall our previous phone conversation correctly, you weren't very enthusiastic about my offer.

Think about it. You'll never have to worry about money or parts.

Never debase yourself hawking some product for pennies.

No more begging.

Just the freedom to drive.

I'd like that, Mr. King.

Excellent. Just remember, you work for me now.

Welcome back race fans to the 5th race of the RIMBA Grand Prix.

And this one's a doozy.

Doozy!

Today's race starts at the top of the mountain named Blizzard's Bite. Which pretty much says it all really.

Miss Dira has more.

Our racers will have to speed down this narrow, uneven path

that has been carved out of the very rocks of Blizzard's Bite.

This is probably the most challenging course we've seen so far this season.

The trick here isn't winning the race, it's surviving it!

Word is that every team has been working round the clock

getting their cars ready to survive in these harsh conditions.

Will their work pay off?

Just join us in just a few moments to find out.

I've got it!

Over here!

We need to go now.

5 minutes!

You've got 2.

Race begins in one minute. Last call for the Ripper. -Get in!

That's it! Go! Go! Go!

Better late than never, I guess.

As you can see, all of the cars have been modified and retrofitted to race in these almost whiteout conditions.

And there goes the Ark, making it's way down to the stadium where it will meet all the racers at the finish line.

And we're off!

A bit of a slow start as the drivers get acclimated to these icy conditions.

Yowza! All systems go, Miles. She's running like a dream.

Just watch your steering. You're going to have to drift around the sharper turns.

Tag!

I'm fine. Just missed it.

Now he decides to hurry up.

What a move from Tag!

Looks like he's still carrying some momentum from his last race.

My sources are telling me that the driver's are unhurt

but Sonny, Ooaa and Cuckoo are right at the back of the pack.

Effectively, they're out of the race.

What a jump! As things stand, Axle is still in the lead.

Tag, last week's winner, is currently in the middle of the pack

with Tamira, Meika, Krom and Wrecks bringing up the rear.

This is not good.

Later for you, little girl!

I'm going to regret this.

*Honk*

Smart move, little lizard.

Dumb move, croc.

Axle's not messing about.

It's a rematch folks. Tag or Axle for the win.

And it looks like Axle has something to prove.

Hey Miles, remember that race with the Bash Brothers?

No. No. Bad idea. Bad idea!

Woohoo!

I just got her back together!

I see it! 2 in a row, baby. 2 in a row!

Unbelievable!

Axle has just pulled off a last minute win at Blizzard's Bite.

Looks like the old lion has just showed the cub who's king of the jungle.

No matter what I tried I couldn't beat him.

Axle's too good. He's better than me.

This time. But remember, there's another race next week.

So we gear up, get it together and beat him next time. And the time after that.

The RIMBA Grand Prix is a whole season. Not just one race.

And our season's not over yet.

Looks like my newfound optimism is catching on.

Of course if you keep losing races, the season's not going to go so well.

And there it is.

Thank you. Your friend, whether you like it or not. Meika.

Why not?

Hmm!

Brain Coffee Video Podcast Episode 8 – Mindfulness - Duration: 8:10.

Welcome to the Brain Coffee Podcast, where Doctors Eric Leuthardt and Albert Kim unlock

life's little mysteries about health, wellness, entertainment, technology and how the brain

makes sense of it all.

Sit back, relax and open up your mind.

Dr. Albert Kim I just saw a patient the other day.

And I was so struck by how the entire family, I mean, this happens so often.

You've seen this, too.

How the whole family gets together, rallies behind the patient and helps the patient see

through their treatments.

You know, even helps them take walks every day.

And you know, I wonder if just physical strength, physical resilience, mental resilience, that

helps.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt It's an interesting constellation.

'Cause so often, these patients want to have some level of control.

You know, the question they always ask me is, can I change my diet to help fight this

tumor (?) ?

Dr. Albert Kim What do you say to that, by the way?

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I say well-balanced, nutritious diet is the

way to go.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, I do, too.

I say don't, not a lot of sugar drinks either.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dr. Albert Kim You know, the PET scan is a sugar scan basically.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt That's right, that's right, yeah, yeah,

that's right.

And so I think people really want to have a sense of what factors can they control and

one of the things I think you see when a patient is confronted by a brain tumor is that it

really kind of strips away all the superficial stuff and you can see people as they are.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, that's true.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt And I think that you see a lot of variability

in how people cope kind of with something nobody ever wants to be told, that you have

a brain tumor.

Dr. Albert Kim I actually have some thoughts on this too.

What are the components of coping well and I think ultimately, does coping well also

help you overcome the disease?

I guess those are two different things we should talk about,

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Yeah, I don't know about overcoming the

disease, but you know, I certainly see kind of a certain group of people who I think do

pretty well relative to the disease that they have.

And I think it has a lot to do with stress coping mechanisms.

And you mentioned it, you mentioned it earlier.

That for instance, in mice, if people get steroids, it can potentially make the tumor

worse.

And I think that we know, in the setting of stress, our cortisol levels go up and that

that inhibits our immune system.

And I think that your immune system is really critical for how you fight these tumors.

So if people who have good coping skills, and again, that can be a number of different

things.

That can be good family.

Some people have really strong faith-based orientation that they find meaning in their

disease and meaning behind it.

Or maybe it's meditation.

But people who can manage their stress, it seems to me at least on average, do better

with some of these really dire malignant brain tumors.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, I agree, I agree.

I guess even, even down to them making it to the treatments, right?

Dr. Eric Leuthardt That's right.

Dr. Albert Kim Because if they're not physically able to

face that treatment that day, you know, they're never going to get to it.

So I think in a practical sense, and also maybe more in a sort of more emotional spiritual

sense, I think it helps these people.

But absolutely, family is just so important.

Actually, it's amazing.

I don't see that many patients in whom the family doesn't sort of rally behind them

when this, brain tumors strike.

It's actually quite optimistic

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think that's right, I think that's right.

It really does pull people together.

And for us, it's kind of the privilege and the honor in these dark moments to kind of

help guide people through this.

Dr. Albert Kim Right, right.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think that really is, because you really

see kind of I think, really what is a beautiful cohesion of people coming together.

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, absolutely.

We mentioned family structure, we mentioned, you mentioned the spiritual side of things

helping you cope.

Exercise?

I think some—

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I have to think exercise.

Because I've had some patients who are really exceptional athletes.

You know, for instance, who are triathlon runners who seem to do pretty well.

Dr. Albert Kim Right, right.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt When you think about our last brain works,

that was based on a patient who was a triathlete.

And he's doing unbelievably well.

Dr. Albert Kim No, you're right.

I remember one patient, he, even on the chemotherapy he was doing like five miles a day, which

is, I can't even, I can't even do two miles a day.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Right, right, right, right, right.

Dr. Albert Kim No, I certainly think it helps out.

You know actually, and it's not only on the patient side.

This is just an interesting aside.

You know, they talk about doctors having a substantial amount of burnout.

I, I mean me personally and I think what I see from you, I mean, we love our job.

I don't really feel it that much.

But I can understand that in other doctors.

And the only thing that seems to reliably suppress that burnout in doctors in exercise

also.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Yeah, that's right, that's right.

You know it's interesting, like what does, can cause you to burn out?

Actually, I think it has less to do with patients.

It actually has to go with all the stuff all around it.

Because there's been a lot of studies that show the amount of clicks or the amount of

like times you have to interact with a computer leads to more burnout than actually the patient

interaction.

Dr. Albert Kim Oh, I can believe that, I can believe that.

So we have the family, spirituality.

We have exercise.

I mean, another thing I might think about is meaning, joy, purpose.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I was going to maybe add to that meditation.

You know, like mindfulness.

I think that; so for instance, I know that there's, and again, I don't know that

this has been tested in brain tumors, but I know that mindfulness has been looked at

for depression and Alzheimer's.

And it seems to have, certainly for depression, has a beneficial effect.

Dr. Albert Kim So mindfulness meaning like I'm thinking

about what I'm thinking or feeling right now.

That's the idea behind it?

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Yes, so mindfulness is kind of a more I guess

maybe secular or more kind of scientific term for what a lot of people refer to as meditation.

Dr. Albert Kim Oh, OK.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt You know, where basically you go into a state,

a calm presence.

You don't ruminate about ideas.

There's a number of different methods that you can do to achieve mindfulness.

Some people kind of think about different parts of their body in a series, so they really

become present to the moment.

And it seems to reduce a lot of brooding, ruminations, which are associated with, which

are associated with stress.

And that affects again, cortisol going up and down.

And so they reduce their cortisol levels, and that seems to be helpful for people kind

of who are elderly and be somewhat preventative for cognitive decline and helps in depression.

Dr. Albert Kim That makes sense.

My parents are actually Buddhist, so I heard a lot about meditation growing up.

But I--

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Did you parents meditate?

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, yeah.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt That's interesting.

Dr. Albert Kim The breathing, and so it sounds a lot like

this mindfulness.

It's a really about the breathing first.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt Yeah, you focus on body elements, that's

right.

Dr. Albert Kim And then not judging what thoughts or emotions

come into your head, but just letting them sort of come in and out.

It's almost like a biofeedback--

Dr. Eric Leuthardt That's exactly what it is.

Dr. Albert Kim Kind of thing.

And so maybe that's how you decrease your stress levels.

That's interesting.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt And those type of activities are shown to

be associated with physiologic changes in your brain beyond just cortisol.

For instance, again, going back to a brain computer interface type of stuff, we know,

for instance, that mindfulness is associated with a theta rhythm.

And theta rhythms are associated with frontal lobe and hippocampus.

And basically those areas that you see an increase in theta rhythms.

So it seems to be better in training your frontal lobe and your hippocampus for I think

general integration of information.

Dr. Albert Kim I see, I see.

So all of these things have to be brought together.

Patient has more grit, patient does better.

I should probably have more transparent, frank conversations about these aspects.

I mean, I'm always talking about just treatments and things like that and next visit.

And as I think about it, we have these conversations all the time.

This is a great thing to bring up with patients as well just in the visits.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I actually, 'cause it's one of the things

that they control.

I think and so often in these situations where you feel like completely out of control because

you've been given a diagnosis that's really threatening everything, by giving them things

that they can kind of have a tangible grasp on; but when I have to do awake surgeries,

I actually will send them to mindfulness training.

Because I find that they basically wake, for a part of the surgery when they have to wake

up where we can do brain mapping, they tend to wake up much calmer and they do much better

and they need less anesthesia.

Dr. Albert Kim Oh, wow, that's interesting.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt But I think your point of like, hey, let's

talk about this on a regular basis, is actually a really good one

Dr. Albert Kim Yeah, I think I'm going to start doing it.

Dr. Eric Leuthardt I think that's right.

Sabrina Claudio Issues Second Apology For Racist Tweets - [SEE DETAILS VIDEO] - Duration: 4:19.

Sabrina Claudio Issues Second Apology For Racist Tweets

Sabrina Claudio issues a more detailed apology for her past tweets.

Earlier this week, it came to light that Sabrina Claudio was the owner of a Twitter account responsible for sending out posts

deemed being as derogatory against black women. Naturally, Twitter did its thing and the Miami-bred singer

songwriter was forced to reckon with the demeaning comments she had made back in 2012 prior to establishing her career.

While she was slow to act, she eventually put out a brief apology on Twitter under her official account, deleting the old one.

Most critics weren't too pleased with Claudio's apology and Friday, she took to Instagram to deliver on a lengthier post, issuing a second statement on the situation.

"Im sorry for not saying something sooner. Im sorry for the short, straight to the point apology I posted on Twitter," she wrote.

"Ive made many mistakes in my life. Many that have happened when I was young, lost and did not know who I was as an individual. Ones that have no excuse.

Time doesnt matter, whether it was six years ago or two minutes ago. It was still wrong. The words I used then are not who I was or who I am today."

She went on to add her condemnation of discrimination and the tearing down of other women, suggesting that her music is created in direct contrast to such things.

"Yes, I made ignorant comments that I regret. But to make this clear, I never had an account dedicated to taking down women.

It breaks my heart knowing that this rumor has been created and is being spread out

Discrimination in any form no matter who its directed to is not acceptable.

My music is dedicated to empowering women...empowering all people for that matter. Its what I represent.

Its what I'm proud of most. I am so different than what Im being painted out to be. But its my fault that you all feel the way you do.

I am willing to prove to you who I really am."

Recently, she dropped off two new singles, including the Khalid-assisted "Don't Let Me Down."

Soon enough, though, this controversy managed to eclipse it all. Read her full statement down below.
