LITTLE BIT.

HOW CAN I TAKE A TRADITION AND

KIND OF PUT A SPIN O IT.

SO FLOWERS AND FANCIES HAS

BRIDESMAIDS BOUQUET, BUT LET'S

MAKE IT WEARABLE FLORAL.

SO POTENTIALLY IN JEWELRY OR

YOU HAVE THEM IN DIFFERENT PARTS

OF THE BODY.

STATEMENT PIECE.

OMAR: I WAS GOING TO WEAR THAT,

WHICH IS GREAT.

THERE ARE FEATHERS.

IT'S UNIQUE AND FUN.

A LITTLE LESS OF A STATEMENT,

NECKLACE BUT STILL BEAUTIFUL.

LET THE TWO BIG BLOOMS TAKE THE

SHOW.

THEY JUST WORK REALLY WELL.

THE NICE THING IS WHEN THE

DANCING START AND THE RECEPTION

IS GOING, THEY'RE STILL WEARING

THEIR JEWELRY.

IT'S NOT LIKE ON A BOUQUET ON

THE TABLE OR SOMETHING.

OMAR: I LIKE THAT.

>> IT'S A NEAT TREND AND I THINK

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO BRIDES

AND GROOMS KIND OF MIXING IT UP

A LITTLE BIT.

OMAR: ONE OF THE THINGS I SHOULD

SAY, A QUICK SHOUT-OUT.

ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS FROM HOME

IS GETTING MARRIED, CAMERON

HAYE.

TO HIS FIANCE, FRANCI TAKE

NOTE OF THIS LOOK.

THE FIRST THING THAT STRIKES ME

IS FLOWERS, SPRING, THE

BEGINNING OF THE SEASON.

>> FLORAL IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST

PARTS OF YOUR DESIGN.

YOU CAN DO SO MUCH WITH FLORAL

AND SPRING IS AN AMAZING TIME,

OBVIOUSLY.

ALL THE FLOWERS ARE AT OUR

DISPOSAL AS FAR AS WHICHEVER

KIND WE WANT.

IT'S A GREAT TIME FOR IT.

OMAR: I LIKE IT.

>> ALSO IF YOU HAVE ANY BRIDES

AND GROOMS GETTING MARRIED, THEY

CLEAN.

REPORTER: SUPER CLEAN AND

ALLERGEN-FREE.

JENNIFER: WAYS TO HELP KIDS DEAL

PWITH ALLERGIES IS DR. ASHANTY

WOODS BACK AGAIN.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS PARENTS CAN

DO?

>> FIRST, RECOGNIZE IF, IN FACT,

YOUR CHILD HAS ALLERGIES.

ALLERGIES AND COLDS, THE

SYMPTOMS CAN MIMIC ONEANOTHER.

IF YOUR CHILD IS GETTING RUNNY

NOSE, SNEEZY, ITCHY EYES AND

THRO AT THE SAME TIME EACH

YEAR, IT'S MOST LIKELY

ALLERGIE

AVOIDANCE OF ALLERGENS IS

IMPORTANT.

IF YOUR CHILD IS GOING TO PLAY,

DO IT MAYBE LATER IN THE DAY.

KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED.

IF YOUR CHILD HAS BEEN OUTSIDE

PLAYING ALL DAY LONG, THEY

SHOULD TAKE A SHOWER AND WASH

THEIR HAIR BEFORE THEY GO TO

SLEEP.

JENNIFER: YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT

YOUR CHILD IS ALLERGIC TO AND

WHAT KIND OF MEDICATIONS YOU

NEED.

>> GOALS SHOULD BE LONG-ACTING,

NON-SEDATING MEDICINES.

LIKE CLARITIN AND ZYRTEC.

THEY CAN ALSO GET A NASAL SPRAY

CALLED FLOWNASE, WHICH ARE

PRETTY EFFECTIVE.

JENNIFER: WHEN SHOULD YOU

CONSIDER ALLERGY SHOTS.

>> AFTER A PARENT HAS PLAYED BY

THE RULES.

YOU'VE TRIED AVOIDANCE AND THE

OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS.

THAT'S WHEN YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR

PEDIATRICIAN TO DISCUSS ALLERGY

SHOTS

JENNIFER: HOW DO YOU EASE YOUR

CHILD INTO THE TESTS FOR

ALLERGIES?

THAT CAN BE SCARY.

>> IT CAN BE KIND OF SCARY.

LETTING YOUR CHILD KNOW WE'RE

TRYING TO GET RELIEF FOR THEM

BUT AS FAR AS A FIVE, SIX, SEVEN

YEAR OLD, GOOD LUCK.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE UNHAPPY WITH

THE TESTING, PERHAPS, AND

CERTAINLY WITH THE ALLERGY

SHOTS.

BUT IT'S SHORT-TERM AND THEN THE

GOAL OF RIDDING THEM OF THE

SYMPTOMS, THE GOALS CERTAINLY

OUTWEIGH THE RISKS.

JENNIFER: I LIKE THE HONE

DELIVERY TECHNIQUE.

>> THAT'S CORRECT.

THE NASAL SPRAY, IT MEANS ANGLE

IT TOWARD THE EAR OF THE SAME

SIDE OF THE NOSTRIL.

IF YOU PUT THE SPRAY IN THE NOSE

AND JUST SPRAY, YOU CAN CAUSE A

NOSE BLEED OR YOU HAVE A VERY

UNCOMFORTABLE CHILD WHO, AGAIN,

WILL BE CRYING.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

-- THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

WE KNOW THE KIDS ARE DYING TO

GET OUTSIDE TODAY NOW THAT THE

WEATHER IS NICER.

IT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO

REMEMBER THAT WHEN THEY TAKE TO

THE STREETS OR DRIVEWAY, THEY

NEED THE PROPER EQUIPMENT.

THEY NEED HELMETS, NEED CAP,

ELBOW PADS.

ANYTIME YOU GET A BICYCLE OR A

TRICYCLE OR A SCOOTER, THEY NEED

TO HAVE THAT EQUIPMENT.

JENNIFER: THIS IS SOMETHING MY

-- WE DID NOT HAVE WHY WAS

GROWING UP.

IT IS A HOVERING STRICKLER.

>> IT IS A REALLY NEAT

EXTENSION.

THE WATER FORCES IT TO GO UP

ABOVE YOU, AND IT'S PRICKLES

DOWN UPON YOU.

-- IT SPRINKLES DOWN UPON YOU.

JENNIFER: I LOVE IT.

>> BOARDGAMES ARE ALWAYS GREAT.

MAKE SURE YOU PICK THE RIGHT AGE

PRODUCTS FOR THE AGE OF YOUR

CHILD.

I HAVE SOME THAT ARE GOOD FOR

THE YOUNGER KIDS, AND SOME THAT

ARE BETTER FOR THE OLDER KIDS.

IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO READ

THE AGE GRADE ON THE PACKAGE.

IT IS NOT JUST ADVICE.

IT IS NOT ABOUT HOW SMART THE

CHILD IS.

IT IS BASED ON THE BELISLE

MENTAL ABILITIES -- ELEMENTAL --

DEVELOPMENTAL ABILITIES OF THE

CHILD.

FOR KIDS UNDER THREE YEARS OLD,

SMALL PARTS ARE A BIG CONCERN.

THIS IS A SMALL PARTS TESTER.

IT REALLY APPLIES TO ANYTHING IN

THE HOME.

IF IT FITS INSIDE THERE, IT IS

TOO SMALL FOR A CHILD UNDER

THREE.

YOU CAN ALSO FIND THESE IN THE

BABY PROOFING SEGMENTS OF

STORES.

BALLOONS CAN POSE A SERIOUS

HAZARD TO CHILDREN.

THEY CAN BE A CHOKING HAZARD

WHEN THEY BREAK.

LITTLE PIECES CAN BE FOUND

AROUND THE HOUSE, AND YOUNGER

SIBLINGS MAY FIND THAT.

YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE

ALL SCOOPED UP AND KEPT AWAY

FROM THE OTHER CHILDREN.

HERE WE HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF SOME

YOUNGER -- PRODUCTS FOR YOUNGER

KIDS.

THIS IS ANOTHER CLASSIC, OUTDOOR

TOY FOR KIDS AGES TWO TO FIVE.

AGAIN, IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO

LOOK AT THOSE AGE GRADES ON THE

PRODUCTS.

Video: The cost of aging - Duration: 2:38.

-- 64 ON

THURSDAY WITH ANOTHER CHANCE FOR

SHOWERS.

TEMPERATURES DOWN INTO THE 50'S

ON FRIDAY.

OMAR: ACCORDING TO THE U.S.

CENSUS, THE NUMBER OF AMERICANS

OVER 65 WILL ALMOST DOUBLE BY

THE YEAR 2050.

BUT WHAT IS THE COST OF AGING?

OUR FINANCIAL EXPERT ERIC

BROTMAN IS HERE TO EXPLAIN.

SO ERIC, WHAT IS THE COST OF

LIVING?

>> IT IS A WHOLE LOT HIGHER THAN

PEOPLE RECOGNIZE.

THE COST OF MEDICAL CARE IS

HIGHER THAN PEOPLE REALIZE.

THE INFLATION RATE FOR SENIORS

IS HIGHER THAN IT AFFECTS ANY

OTHER AMERICANS.

OMAR: SINCE I'M IN MY 20'S, WHAT

IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT I

AM LOOKING LIKE FINANCIALLY AS

COMPARED TO SOMEONE TWICE OR

THREE TIMES MY AGE?

>> SOMEONE WHO IS TWICE OR THREE

TIMES HER AGE, THEY HAVE TO

THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEIR

EARNING CAPACITY HAS GONE DOWN,

AND THAT THE THINGS SENIOR SPEND

THE MOST MONEY ON OUR NOT THE

SAME THINGS WE SPEND MONEY ON.

IF THEY ARE NOT HEALTHY, THEY

SPEND MORE MONEY ON MEDICAL CARE

WHICH IS MORE EXPENSIVE THEN

BREAD AND MILK.

YOU ALSO HAVE EDUCATION FOR

GRANDKIDS.

IF YOU ARE IN A POSITION TO DO

SO, GRANDPARENTS OFTEN WANT TO

DO THAT, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE IN

THEIR DETRIMENT TO DO SO.

OMAR: SO, YOU WANT TO MAKE WISE

LIVING DECISIONS.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS PEOPLE CAN

DO TO PREPARE THEMSELVES?

>> I THINK SOME OF IT IS SMART

ABOUT -- IS ABOUT USING SMART

DECISIONS WHEN IT COMES TO

SOCIAL SECURITY.

I THINK IT MAKES SENSE IF YOU

ARE A NERD COUPLE AND RELYING ON

TWO INCOMES THAT YOU MAKE SURE

-- IF YOU ARE A MARRIED COUPLE

AND RELYING ON TWO INCOMES, YOU

WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THAT

SAVINGS GOING AWAY -- HE PUT

AWAY SOMEWHERE.

OMAR: SAY SOMEONE IS WATCHING

RIGHT NOW AND REALIZES THEY HAVE

BEEN MAKING SOME MISTAKES OR

HAVE NOT BEEN THINKING ABOUT IT,

ARE THERE THINGS THEY CAN DO

LATER ON IN LIFE TO SLOW DOWN

SOME OF THESE AFFECTS?

>> IF YOU HAVE ALREADY COLLECTED

SOCIAL SECURITY OR YOUR PENSION,

THAT SHIP HAS SAILED.

YOU CAN STILL MAKE DECISIONS

ABOUT HOUSING.

DO YOU STAY IN YOUR HOME, DO YOU

DOWNSIZE, YOU LOOK AT IT REVERSE

Nonprofit Collaboration - Duration: 3:16.

Hi everybody, hey it's Craig Freshley here.

I'm in the conference room of something called the Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative.

And I want to talk a little bit about collaboration.

There's a couple different types.

One kind of collaboration is where I might get together with somebody else because it's

good for me and it's good for them.

Let's say I need to buy something, they need to buy something, let's combine our order

and get a bulk discount.

Or I need to go someplace, that person needs to go someplace, let's ride together and

save some money.

But there's another kind of collaboration where our collaborating helps me, it helps

you, and it also helps some greater good: the community.

It's not just a win-win.

It's a win-win-win.

And that's what the Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative is all about.

This is an organization that's made up of 30 different organizations in the region and

the whole purpose of this central organization is to help other nonprofits help their communities.

Now, collaboration, for it to work well, needs a couple key ingredients.

First is a common goal.

There has to be something in it for each organization.

Otherwise they won't put forth the effort.

Second, there has to be some trust that if I do my part you're going to do your part.

Third, there has to be some sort of organization that actually focuses on the collaboration.

Maybe it's loaned horsepower from one of the collaborators or maybe it's a neutral

facilitator.

The Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative has a staff person that does nothing else for

20 hours a week other than make that collaborative work.

When you've got these ingredients, you have a good chance of making a win for each of

the collaborating partners and for the community as a whole.

Look, it's easy to keep my head down and just do my work.

It's harder to keep my head up and be looking for opportunities.

It's even harder to set my own work aside to work on a joint project with you or somebody

else.

But when you do that and when it's done right, you have a chance of not only making

things better for yourself but also better for your partner and also better for the community

as a whole.

Thanks for listening everybody!

Contest Finalist Video | Food Innovation Challenge (Wiser Divider) | Jones and Thomas - Decatur, IL - Duration: 3:18.

I'm from Marshalltown, Iowa...grew up there.

The last ten years I've been in retail

businesses. The first one I bought it was

already established and then I resold

that one. And the second one is a frozen

yogurt shop that we made into a full

restaurant and that one we started from

ground up. It was basically problem

solving that got me started in

developing new flavors with solving a

problem of dividing the bowl. It was a

customer request so that's kind of

what's led into it. Eighty percent of the

bowls that are sold are the 16-ounce

bowls in yogurt shop and ice cream shop,

and there was only a Paper divider that

was going to cost me about five cents

a piece and is very wasteful. A little

more environmentally friendly way of

dividing the bowl, and it's more

accommodating to the bowl, and they're

wanting it and they're paying for it so

it's kind of a win-win for everybody. We

started making them at our store, and we

couldn't keep them stocked up quick

enough so that was a good sign, but it

was also a problem with the same time so

we would develop more flavors than just

the original that we have out now. But we

have monster and chocolate and peanut

butter and the more that we put out the

more people were like, "How should I

divide the bowl, rather than if I should"

so it became part of the process rather

than an option.

What we're trying to do is we're trying

to get this flat condensed piece and

I've learning a lot along the way

on the method of making because it's

completely different than what we've

done at the store. It can supply me with

just tying up all the loose ends that I

need. I need it perfected right now. We're

just having a slight problem with the

recipe with it running through the oven.

It's good, but it's not perfect, and we

need that base recipe perfected so we

can branch out and do more flavors. I

would also like to get into other types

of dividers that I know that would work

because I've tested the market and I

really need the facilities at ADM and

the knowledge behind it to make it work.

With the recipe, we're shooting for a 12-

month shelf life and we need it a

certain density so we don't have

problems with shipping and things like

that. So we would like to accommodate

with a sugar free option and granola

dividers and we have really high hopes

for this because they keep selling. The

more options we put out there at the

more orders working. I think it's kind of

going to be hand in hand with ice cream.

Again, when all of the self-serve shops

opened up whether it's gelato or ice

cream or frozen yogurt, they kind of lost

the ice cream cone and that's kind of

what ice cream was built around. It was a

happy marriage, and there's no cone in

many places anymore, and that's why I

designed my edible dividers with the

cone patterns. It was kind of nostalgic

the cone found its way back to the

industry again. I really think that it's

going to be more of a staple in these in

these facilities, they're going to just

pick it up divide it up and then go on

their life.

Finalist Video | Food Innovation Challenge (Think.Eat.Live.) | Jones and Thomas - Decatur, IL - Duration: 4:45.

I'm Dan Tegel, and this is Karen

Staebler and we're the founders of Think.

Eat.Live. We live in St. Louis, and

after a number of years where we both

had a series of corporate jobs with big

companies as actually organizational

psychologists, no food industry background

whatsoever, but we are inside helping

companies change. And then we found a

passion around how could we help the

food industry change and that's how we

got started at this. And so we've been in

business for about two years now. We

provide a healthy gluten-free sunflower

and baking mixes. We basically invented a

new flour made from sunflower seeds so

our goal's pretty lofty. We want to change

the food industry and provide

gluten-free baking mix options that are

both healthy and really delicious. When

we launched two years ago, we spent some

time, you know, doing product development

and package development and then we

entered into some a couple of the larger

retailers in St. Louis...Schnucks and then

Dierbergs and Lucky's Market. As our

kind of retail front to introduce, you

know, the public to our idea so what

we've got today are we have several

baking mixes, pancakes, muffins, brownies,

power bars, and then we also sell our

flour called sunflour. And so all those

mixes are formulated where you get a

third of your protein and fiber for the

day and they have like half the carbs of

anything else. They keep people full. We

have doctors carrying it in their

offices, we have St. Louis University, you

know, wanting their students to have it,

and we're also doing some online sales.

And this is, for us it feels like, this

was kind of the starting point. It was easy to

get baking mix,

but now we have people asking can you

give us frozen pizza, can you do bread

and we do anything made of flour. We can

make a sunflower seed flour, but it will

be healthy for you, and that's where

we're hoping it goes for the future.

We're very excited about the mentorship

opportunity. We're not food industry

experts. We didn't grow up in this. We're

extremely resourceful individuals to have,

you know, a problem to solve that we're

very passionate about, but there are

limits to that, and so really being able

to talk and get some guidance from

people who have kind of cut their teeth

in it is one thing I think. The other is

we're at the point in our business where

we can continue to grow incrementally,

we're self-funded and we've been lucky

that we've been able to do it that way

so far, but we are at the point where we

need funding, and so you know it's been

very appealing to us that there's some

help there in both cash as well as

services. I think the other part of it is

we really wanted some some concentrated

effort to really fine-tune our business

plan, and this is a perfect opportunity

to do that. We're doing it with input,

with a little bit of ability to look

retrospectively, where we've been before

we get too far, and so it's just a really

nice time in our business, and I mean

we're both viewing. This is a catalyst to

really leverage our idea even more. We

want to change the food industry and

really revolutionize the way people eat

by giving them foods that they love.

Going gluten-free doesn't mean you have

to eat stuff that tastes like cardboard,

and it doesn't mean you have to give up

all baked goods to eat a healthy high

protein, you know balanced diet, and so we

just want people to have stuff that they

love and not worry about it, but do it in

a thoughtful way where they're actually

using food as medicine, instead of, you

know, putting stuff in that either takes

away from their health or, you know,

doesn't really add to it very much. You

know the U.S. is eating more and more,

you know, carbohydrate-rich foods,

and we're getting heavier by the year as

a country and we really want to reverse

that trend, and we feel by having a new

flour that actually has the right

balance of protein and fiber that we can

actually help, you know, improve the

health of the country, and so that's

really what our goal is.
