My dad was a wheat and corn grain cattle
farmer and I grew up on the farm and
later on in my life I realized that I
wanted to do some baking with my own
grain. I started growing hard bread whole
wheat of the Western kind of stuff, I
guess it was back then, and grinding of
frying it up into flour for my own
bread. I've been doing that now for about 25
years. As far as the business goes, I
retired from teaching high school about
26 years and a third ago and I decided I
really wanted to get certified and try
to do a second career in organic flours
and so on. And then it turned out we had
to do value added and to get to make
enough money to get by because we are fairly
small, so we started baking. Now I'd already
been baking all of our
pastries cookies and so forth so it
kind of an easy slide right into them. I guess
it just started...I started cooking with a
few of my buddies and I really like to
cook so when my dad retired I went home
to visit and we started baking some
bread together and I just fell in love
with baking and I knew that I wanted to
spend some time baking and creating some
baked good so we started making cookies
and muffins and bagels and all sorts of
stuff and from then on it just kind of
snowballed into this organic, you know,
cookie or baked goods company. I guess
the company was established in 2015. That
was the first year we started doing
farmers markets in Western Michigan,
Muskegon, Mason County area so I guess
the company officially started in year
of 2015. We received overwhelming
feedback from the market in the Mason
County area to be honest with you...really,
really positive feedback and also too
I spend half the year in California and
we started producing goods under the
cottage food law out there as well and
we got really good feedback in both
markets and that's when I really knew
that we had something really special
because we were on two different parts
of the nation and both demographic groups
were just blown away with what we had to
offer.
The experiences I see that there are
mentors involved and so it would be nice
to hear their suggestions and so forth,
but we have rented a building in the
town of Ludington that needs a lot of
work, a lot of cleanup and we're
determined to have a certified organic
kitchen. Our next step is getting our
vegan protein cookie line out there to
the public for retail sale so people can
find that their local establishments,
local grocery stores, and purchase it off
the shelf. We want to start producing
this on a larger scale rather than just
baking in our home kitchen and in our
personal areas you know we want to get
our certified kitchen going and really
get our products out there. That's where
we want it. That's our very next step. We
just really want to get into mass
production really...packaging, production
and the whole works and getting to the
point where we can actually
hire people from the community to come
in and work make a positive influence. We
believe that organics is good for
people. If you live healthy, you treat
the ground well, and it will treat you
well and so we're hoping to build
ourselves into something much bigger so
that we can benefit so the people can
benefit.

Nonprofit Collaboration - Duration: 3:16.
Hi everybody, hey it's Craig Freshley here.
I'm in the conference room of something called the Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative.
And I want to talk a little bit about collaboration.
There's a couple different types.
One kind of collaboration is where I might get together with somebody else because it's
good for me and it's good for them.
Let's say I need to buy something, they need to buy something, let's combine our order
and get a bulk discount.
Or I need to go someplace, that person needs to go someplace, let's ride together and
save some money.
But there's another kind of collaboration where our collaborating helps me, it helps
you, and it also helps some greater good: the community.
It's not just a win-win.
It's a win-win-win.
And that's what the Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative is all about.
This is an organization that's made up of 30 different organizations in the region and
the whole purpose of this central organization is to help other nonprofits help their communities.
Now, collaboration, for it to work well, needs a couple key ingredients.
First is a common goal.
There has to be something in it for each organization.
Otherwise they won't put forth the effort.
Second, there has to be some trust that if I do my part you're going to do your part.
Third, there has to be some sort of organization that actually focuses on the collaboration.
Maybe it's loaned horsepower from one of the collaborators or maybe it's a neutral
facilitator.
The Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative has a staff person that does nothing else for
20 hours a week other than make that collaborative work.
When you've got these ingredients, you have a good chance of making a win for each of
the collaborating partners and for the community as a whole.
Look, it's easy to keep my head down and just do my work.
It's harder to keep my head up and be looking for opportunities.
It's even harder to set my own work aside to work on a joint project with you or somebody
else.
But when you do that and when it's done right, you have a chance of not only making
things better for yourself but also better for your partner and also better for the community
as a whole.
