ENERGY EDUCATION SHORT VIDEO 1 - Duration: 5:10.

College of the Desert, Palm Desert, is one of the 113 community colleges among the California Community College system.

College of the Desert has taken the leading role in developing the state's first Zero Net Energy Technology educational program.

The statewide goal is specified within California's Long Term Strategic Plan.

But how do we get there? Does it really take a "village" of people?

It takes more than a village.

It takes an educated village,

and a village willing to communicate.

It takes team work,

and in the end, one person's work

reflects on the work of all the others.

We must ... work as a team.

There are plenty of other players,

and these are not new trades,

but we can no longer deliver the same product that we have been.

There are new levels of expectations,

and the common link is education and understanding.

We must work smarter, not harder.

So, what's the problem?

Here is an example of an HVAC design which clearly is off track.

The "Total System Loads"

indicate a system sized to meet about 4 tons of air conditioning

and a 39,846 Btu furnace.

Instead, the designer specified two 5 ton systems,

for nearly 10 tons of air conditioning,

and a furnace capacity nearly four times greater than what is truly needed.

This is not a unique instance. I find HVAC oversizing to be a common issue. Do you think education would help this designer?

Duct leakage. Here is a common installation defect.

The installer said that the painter put the registers up

before he got there,

so it wasn't his problem.

These cracks

between the drywall and the boot,

which is up in the attic,

allows for hot attic air to leak between the

house and the attic.

Here's a Quality Insulation Installation job gone wrong

We call that Quality Insulation Installation, or QII.

I won't go into details, but insulation SHOULD be

a smooth, flat surface-- no voids, lumps, cracks, or gaps.

This isn't pretty.

Would education have helped this installer?

I think so.

What's wrong with this wall?

Same job. The wall actually looks pretty clean at first sight.

However, this is a 2x4 wall with the 2x laid flat.

That leaves a 1.5" cavity for 3.5" of insulation.

The insulation will be compressed when the drywall is hung.

So, this will decrease the insulation R-value by 50%.
