Otaku No Video also known as "Geek's Video" is an OVA with 2 episodes that was released
in 1991.
Each of these episodes are around 48 Minutes long and the studio behind this OVA is Studio
Gainax.
Otaku No Video is somewhat based on the real story of how Gainax was founded.
By doing so, it is addressing multiple aspects of different groups of otakus.
Back in the 80s and 90s, animation studios used to release a lot more OVA's then they
do today.
As home videos became more and more popular, new animators and directors were able to try
their luck in OVA's, while more experienced people worked on longer shows.
One of the most interesting things about OVA's was, that you could go completely crazy with it
It could be about anything and there were no restrictions when it came to animation
and content.
Otaku No Video took advantage of that.
Mixing together anmation and real life interviews, we get an interesting contrast by experiencing
the story through animation, and then getting more background information from real interviews.
Otaku No Video is an orignal work from Gainax and apparently shows the origin of Gainax
and how the studio came to existence.
Not literally, but you get to understand who the people are, how they think like and how
these minds ended up working on anime.
Before getting deeper into it, the term otaku is often used to describe people who are obsessed
with anime and manga, and while this is not wrong, this is not the only meaning it has.
You can be an otaku of everything.
Be it music, movies or any kind of other interests.
Otaku does not mean that they are talking about anime or manga.
This OVA is giving you a good insight into the Otaku culture, and shows their lifestyle,
opinions and also how they are viewed by other people.
The combination of animated scenes and real life scenes, is giving us a good impression
on how people become otakus and how it influences their life.
In the animated segment, we are following a character called Ken, who seems to be a
pretty normal guy.
He is shown having a rather negative opinion about otakus and is not able to understand
their fascination for what they love.
This changes, when he slowly gets into it himself.
You are seeing how his personality is changing and how he is starting to have a different
lifestyle.
This also has an impact on the way people view him.
Suddenly people's opinion about Ken becomes a lot more negative, and while this OVA is
being very extreme, it's definitely believable.
It shows both the ugly and the good side of starting to get addicted to a certain fandom.
It's interesting to see this development, because this shows how ignorance, or the lack
of understanding for something, is often the source of being so judgemental.
The lack of understanding of why someone would be into something, that you don't understand
is often leading to situation, where people are viewing this very interest, as something
weird.
Of course, everyone should be able to decide themselves on how much time and energy they
want to put into their hobby and interest, but the interesting part here is, how different
these interests are viewed by the public.
Before being an otaku, Ken used to play tennis, a sport and interest where no one had any
problems.
It's considered as something "normal", whatever "normal" means.
But once you start watching anime, you are weird.
Why ? This is a really good question, that can lead to lenghty discussions.
The point is, there are interests and hobbies that are socially accepted and things which
are not.
Being an ideal person, is something society want you to be, they want you to fit everywhere,
be it at work or with your family.
As much as individualism is encouraged, the moment you actually express your feelings,
people can turn on you.
They think you are different.
In this case, they consider Otakus to be losers.
No wonder, that people can be so different when they are alone at home.
Here they can be the person they want to be.
They can put their mask away, which they have to put on outside, to fit with the world,
and finally be themselves.
As much as the OVA is trying to be a Parody and show us extreme cases of otakus, it is
also very self aware and knows that it is not far from the reality.
Both the fact that, that Otakus are not accepted, but also that Otakus are weirdos.
Or are they ?
Here we get to the real life scenes of this OVA.
The interviewer is asking questions, that almost feel mocking, but when you go through
these question, you start to realize that these type of questions are exactly what people
think about otakus.
These are stereotypes that exist.
That being said, every Otaku is different, depending on their interest.
Thanks to statistics and different viewpoints, you realize how different all these people
are and how they feel about certain topics.
The whole interview is called the "Portrait of an Otaku" and that's a very fitting title
to what you are seeing.
People talk about how much their interest has changed them.
These are not just hobbies, that they like to spend their freetime on, these are lifestyles
that they chose to follow.
It's truly fascinating.
A Portrait of an Otaku is the perfect way of describing this OVA in general.
This anime is giving you a story and viewpoints, that you will not see in any other project
If you are interested in the Otaku culture, I can definitely suggest you, to give this
a shot.
