Welcome back to Psych-Minded. I'm your host Kalley Marie. To continue on with
our October spooky psychology series we are going to be talking about an actual
psychiatric diagnosis where people believe they are being transformed into
a werewolf. Thank you for joining me today on Psych-Minded. If you are
returning thank you so much for subscribing. If you haven't yet
subscribed please subscribe so you'll never miss a video on Mental Health and
psychology. If you're joining me this month, it's a very cool month to be
joining me because for October we have been doing spooky psychology videos for
every week in October. I'm so glad you're here so don't forget to subscribe.
There's a lot of cool things coming up in the future on this channel. Clinical
lycanthropy -- what is clinical lycanthropy? The official diagnosis is somebody
believes they're being transformed into an animal. They get the sensations that
their body is transforming. They may even take on physical behaviors such as
grunting or crawling and basically embody an animal. They may believe that
they have already transformed into an animal or that they are currently in the
process of metamorphosizing into one. The most common animal that is found with
this diagnosis is actually a werewolf. The name comes from the Greek word
lycanthropy and just like lycanthropy by itself strictly means that someone
believes that they are transforming into a werewolf. The clinical diagnosis could
include any animal. So they haven't just found werewolves with this diagnosis --
they have found that people think they're transforming into bees or birds
or dogs. It just so happens that werewolf happens to be the most popular.
So when I was doing my research for this video I thought it tied in perfectly
with October and Halloween because we do see this a lot in movies. There is a
historical and even a psychological basis in the transformation into a
werewolf. So this diagnosis is super rare. Out of
56 cases that were studied in the mid-1800s by a doctor named Dr. John
Dirk only 13 cases actually fit the criteria for clinical lycanthropy. There
are a lot of other theories as to what this diagnosis could possibly mean and
we're gonna go into those. So apart from the cases that have been found -- the 13,
maybe 30 cases in historical psychology that have been
found to actually be a clinical lycanthropy, what are the explanations?
For other people, are there other reasons why somebody might believe they're being
transformed into an animal or a werewolf. The number one theory is that
clinical lycanthropy is some sort of co-occurring mental disorders. So some
psychologists believe that it's a combination of certain illnesses that
make it seem and make the person feel as though they are transforming into an
animal. For example schizophrenia can cause some pretty realistic delusions
and hallucinations depending on the type. It's thought that perhaps maybe
clinical lycanthropy is actually a form of schizophrenia, where these delusions
and hallucinations are making the person believe that they are metamorphosizing.
There are also some doctors that believe it's neurologically based. So that maybe
the signals in the brain and in the spine are sending sensations out to the
nerves that make the person feel as though maybe they are growing fur or
they have tingling sensations that are not normal that they might perceive as
being animalistic. So it could be the wiring in the brain. Another mental
illness that it is speculated to be related to is called body dysmorphia
disorder. Body dysmorphia disorder is where a person becomes fixated on one
particular part of their body, whether or not it is actually flawed and whether or
not it actually exists. It ends up being this preoccupation with feeling and
sensation and the way one looks and body dysmorphia disorder is a little bit
different for everybody but it is thought that maybe that has a tie-in to
this. If someone is a little bit more obsessive and preoccupied with something
they may be able to imagine that they are actually transforming into some sort
of animal. So clinical lycanthropy or the feeling that someone is being
transformed into an animal, could also be confused with something called species
dysphoria. Before I did my research for this video I had never heard of this
disorder and it made a lot of sense to me.
Species dysphoria is the feeling that you are in the wrong body but also the
wrong species entirely. With gender dysphoria, an individual believes that
they are in the wrong gender and so species dysphoria is a person believing
that they are actually in the wrong species. Depending on the severity of
this kind, this could manifest in a couple
different ways. It's possible that some of the cases throughout history
that have been thought to be clinical lycanthropy could actually be some sort
of species dysphoria. I thought this would be wonderful to cover today it was
right along the theme of Halloween and things that we do see in media but I
also wanted to give you guys a little bit of history on a really rare illness
and something that we don't talk about often. Thank you so much for joining me
today! Have you ever heard of clinical lycanthropy before this video? If so
please drop a comment below don't forget to subscribe to this channel for more
