Dear Ministry of Health there is a pressing concern about E-Cigarette
now there are various reasons for why someone initially starts smoking it
could be because it makes him look cool or it relaxes them or something else but
that is not why we're here today we are here because it is irrefutable that
smoking is bad for your health and despite this it is common to see young
adults today smoking in subway stations in parks and even outside schools
according to CDC if smoking continues at the current rate among the youth in this
country 5.6 million of today's Americans younger than 18 will die from smoke
related illness think about that for a second. this is
extremely concerning especially because there is a steady increase in use of
electronic cigarettes among middle and high school students electronic
cigarettes are better known as e-cigarettes, are devices that typically deliver
nicotine flavorings and other additives to users through an inhaled aerosol
these devices are rapidly emerging trend and are especially popular among youth
and young adults taking this into account there is a significant need for
state and federal government involvement we need an intervention now before this
gets worse smoking can affect various organs as
tobacco is a known cause of about 25 diseases including but not limited to
lung cancer cardiovascular disease cerebrovascular disease and tumors
such as tumor of the mouth larynx esophagus lip and bladder so what steps
can we take? most studies have shown that raising cigarettes prices through increased
taxes is a highly effective measure for reducing smoking among youth young
adults and persons of low socioeconomic status at the same time reading the
tobacco sales minimum age to 21 years across the United States would
contribute to a substantial reduction in the prevalence of new tobacco use and
dependency by limiting access research has highlighted
the susceptibility of the young adult brain to rapid nicotine addiction we can
prevent that by raising the restriction limit to 21 the federal government
should take necessary steps now to raise legal restriction age for all tobacco
products including e-cigarettes to 21 the state government should work with
the federal government and take steps to implement specialized taxes for e-cigarettes.
the increase in taxes and the age restriction will lower prevalence of
e-cigarettes among youth the resulting decrease in prevalence of smoking will
lead to a decrease in smoke related chronic diseases such as heart attacks
research shows that decrease in multiple chronic conditions per person will
result in a substantially lower health care cost so taking these steps now will
decrease the prevalence of smoking leading to lower morbidity and mortality
as well as health care costs so what are we waiting for
we need to act now!
