Alright. The time has come for you to hire a video editor. How do you do that? I
it's actually pretty easy. Like I mean, it take it take some work, it takes some
time. But I've I've been hiring people in the Philippines as video editors. And I
don't let that intimidate you because that's actually easier than you think too.
I'm going to show you how to do it, how to train them, what not. Where to find
them. -And some great places to stay in the Philippines. -That'd be cool. Okay, so I
first just want to jump in to let's say somebody is interested. You have a
position. You're hiring a video editor. -Why? -And how... -Because... And why would you
hire a video editor? Because you've grown beyond the scope of your own abilities
and time. -A video editing takes a lot of time. -Yeah. -If you're a YouTuber and
you're doing how the video editing, be realistic. How many hours each day do you
put into editing. If you've got a daily YouTube channel, it could be 5 to 8 hours
of editing a day. -Imagine that. Yeah, daily content. -So, imagine if you still made the
same amount of videos but you freed up that time. You had another person doing
the video editing. And I know... I know you're like... You consider yourself
Leonardo da Vinci here like, "It's an art and no one can do it as good as me." We'l...l
Maybe it will address that. But let's just say that you are ready to hire a
video editor. I've got some tips on how to have them apply. Now, because I hire
people in the Philippines, it's a different type of application process. I
don't sit with them face to face. I have them you know, I pull out my phone and I...
-Do you FaceTime with them or do you like...? -Not live. So, I'll chat with them on Voxer
which is live. But I never actually have a phone call or FaceTime. -Yeah, you just
send videos back and forth? -Right. So, I'm talking to them either on a webcam on my
my MacBook or I'll just make them a video and say, "Alright. I want you to
make an application video like this. Just talk to your phone. it doesn't have to be
professional lighting or whatever. I just I just want to hear you talk. And
and here's are a few questions for you. Why do you want to work for me?
What's your experience?" You know, so I have a list of things that I want them
to talk about. And I say, "Just make me a five-minute video."
And then I say, "And figure out how to get that video to me." You know, I want
to figure out or I want to know if they can figure things out. Because it's kind
of a challenging test for some of them. They're like, "Okay." And some of them
upload it to YouTube and send me a link. Other people find a way to upload it to
a thing and send me a download. -I would Think the YouTube link would be highly
appropriate. Given the nature of the job. I mean. -Yeah. -That would be a way I would
go. -So, but when I see those videos, I see the
attention. Some people put... Some people are really stressed about it. But
some like put a lot of thought. It's like how much so they really want
this job. And if I can tell, they actually took a lot of time to edit this video. I
don't require it, alright? But it allows me to see their personality. -Do you give
them a time? Like can you have this to me in the next half hour? You know, something
like that? So that if they do apply edits, you know what I mean? And they do
something cool that it's like how under the gun... -Because I'm
dealing with time zone differences, I haven't been too concerned about that.
But I do like quick turnaround. -Yeah. The people who respond. Because I'll
typically, you know, send out an email to 30 different applicants saying this is
how you apply. -Right. -Yeah I can get more specific on that. But then... So the ones...
-That's a topic for another video. The ones that respond to me the quickest, that's kudos
to them. It's like, "Okay, they are interested." And then if I reply back
asking more questions and they respond quickly it's like, "Okay, this really is..."
-Makes sense. Especially if it's 3 a.m. for them right then. You know what I mean?
Like... -Absolutely. -You might purposely be going, "I know it's a horrible time of day.
Let's see how responsive they are." -Yeah. It's like... I have to add 14 hours. So
right now, we're going into 9:00 in the morning, it's 11 pm in the Philippines. Depending on daylight
savings. That part messes me up. It's either 12 or 14. -Yeah, yeah. -But... -Yeah. -Okay,
next to the the video application, I obviously want to see samples of their
video editing work. Now, that obviously applies to any other position. You want
to see if their logo designers, you want to see logos that they've designed or if
they're writers, you want to see the stuff that they've written. -Portfolio. -But
yeah. You want to... And I always want to know like, "Okay, what was your role in
creating this video?" -Yeah. -Did you just... I don't know put some finishing touches
on it, did you actually go out and do the camerawork? -Yeah. I really want to know.
Did you do the after-effects or did you just buy those? Did you, you know... So I
want them to show me their portfolio and explain what their role was on each of
those. And you know, because we're not being face to face, people can
lie about their portfolio. They can just you know, but when I hire them, I
hire them to do you know the first project is a trial project. And I learned
right away if they can you know, do the test that I need them to.
Before giving them access to everything, I just give them access to one project.
-Yeah, make sense. -And say, "You're going to be paid for this and here's your
assignments." And I'm really flexible. I love being really lenient.
They're not going to do a perfect job the first time. -Right. -But when they
you know, I'm kind of getting a little bit beyond the answer this question. But
I like talking about this stuff. So, they'll they'll send back a video. And
I'll review it. And my goal is to find all the things that they did right and
let them know that I appreciate all of that. And then just give them instruction.
"Okay. For this part, we want to make the transitions a little bit more tight. Or
when you zoom in, let's make sure that we're obeying the rule of thirds." You
know, just different things like that. And then they'll go back. And what I love
about people in the Philippines, more than you don't find it here in the USA
as much. Anyway, anywhere that I've outsourced to as well.
They really want to please their employer. They're like... They're so
genuinely interested. And they love getting that praise and recognition. That
if you start with the praise, give them more instructions. They're like...
They just want to learn. They want to do their best.
-Yeah. You have them on... You know who you want. You've you've hired them, right?
What's the interchange of pay? How does that what does that look? -Yeah. Oh, one
side note that's really cool. You don't have to actually hire them as employees.
You can't. Because they're not US citizens. But that means I don't have to
pay benefits or with or withhold taxes. Or you know, worry about insurance. -So they're
independent contractors to you and in a different country. So, you don't even have
to like file... -There's no 1099. -Yeah. -So when I report it to my account
and give all this stuff, they just file it as a 1099. I kind of assumed.
Then you know, my staff in the Philippines, they're responsible to
follow the laws of the Philippines for filing their own taxes for their income. -Yeah. -So...
But logistically, I always get asked how do you pay them? -Yeah. -And right now, I use
PayPal. So, I'm going to talk about another tool that I'm actually going to
demonstrate on the screen called virtual assistant tool. That's where I find these
amazing Filipinos. There is a built-in tool that they offer. And I've used it
before. And there's some pros and cons to it. So, I'd recommend comparing
PayPal. Because with PayPal, it's so easy and convenient. But they do have
higher fees. And so, there is some advantages to using their virtual
assistant tools payment system. But there's some drawbacks that are like you
have to have them instead of their own debit card which takes time and then you
have to front front end money. So that there's money that you could just
transfer. So, it's... There's pros and cons to both. PayPal is really easy. -What's
their... What kind of percentage do they take? 3-4? -Lately, I think now they just charge
a flat fee of five bucks per... -Transfer? -Per transfer. And but there's also an
exchange rate. And so, I think with the virtual assistant tool, you get a better
exchange from US dollars to Filipino pesos. This is signed out to but... Over the
years that I've been outsourcing, the exchange rate from US dollar to Filipino
pesos has gotten better and better and better favoring the US dollar. So, it's
like even though I'm giving my stuff pay raises, their pay really hasn't gone up.
-Yeah. -Which was kind of cool. -That is. Well, yeah. -It was cool for them and me because
anyway... Because I can give them pay raises. Okay. So, this is the virtual assistant
tool that I use. And where I've been using it for 9 years and where I hire
all of my team in the Philippines. You come down here to the bottom, you come
here to the advanced skill search. That's what we want. This is the gold. And now
what you see here is there's all these different categories. So, if we're looking
to hire a video editor... Let's come in here to graphics and multimedia. And
there's video editing. Now, you can say I want to find somebody that is an expert
or is the best in the world. They're limited on how many 5 stars and 4 stars
they can rate themselves. And for all these categories. So, if somebody's rated
themselves as expert or best in the world as a
video you know, for video editing, that's something that they're pretty confident
in. You know and... If I... You know what? They should have a pretty good knowledge of
Photoshop. I can choose that. And you can come up here to English if you
want. And you know speaking or if they need to be a good English writing or
something. Or if there's any specific. This is more software development. What
I'll typically do is (Let me close English) I'll typically just do that when
I'm looking for a video editor. (Where was it?) -Yeah. So, I'll typically
just select those two things. Because then over here if I want to be you know,
want to be specific that they know how to do premiere then I can just add that
word. Now, a couple other things that I'll do is I'll put in here an ID proof score.
There's a system built-in that will check how real these people are. It
verifies it by their their Facebook account and if it's a real person with
real Facebook activity. It will verify it with their government ID.
Because some people will create multiple accounts saying, "Oh, I'm a video editor
and I'm a I'm a writer and I'm a cook." And yeah. And so. And it... anyway, that's
real helpful. And there's a couple other things. After I hit search resumes,
I can fine tune it even a little bit more. But check this out. Right now, it
shows that there's 560 different people that are video
editors. Now, another... Here's the couple tweaks. I like to just filter it down
those that have added a picture. And less active. You know, if they haven't updated
their profile here in a year, but I'm going to say a month or less on that... -Seems
fair. -And then that's it. So, i'll just narrow the
search. So, we're going to see if it narrows it down from 560. Yeah, it filtered out a
lot. So now, we're down to 189 which is pretty good. Okay, so let's take a look at
this guy. This is what's amazing about hiring people in the Philippines. One of
the amazing things. Okay, this guy is asking for 388 dollars a month for 40
hours a week. He's got a bachelor's degree and you know, I could go... You
know, in fact, let me open this in a new tab and let's go take a look. Gives you a
lot more details about about this guy. You can.... He's aged 21.
It talks about all the different skills he's rated himself at. He has... You can add
paragraphs and he hasn't really added paragraphs to each of these sections.
Just the very top when he did. His skill summary. But he says, you know, you read...
You can you can read through and see them and how good is this English. -Yeah.
-And really, if I want to contact, I'm just click that there. Yeah, there's tests
that they can take. I forgot what the acronym disc stands for. I probably would
tell me if I click on that. Okay. Dominance, influence... So, okay. That's like
a personality. -Yeah. -That's right. It's... You can if you're looking for somebody that
has certain personality characteristics that will have better in a position. So,
anyway, gives you a lot of information. And I can contact him right there. I just
hit that. Let me try it again. And it puts up a form right there. But
you can create email templates. So, I've got a lot of different positions that
I've that I've email people out. So, if I'm sending an email to 30 different
people, I can write at once and then just send it. And when they apply, I don't
have to come in... I can't come into here. But it will actually just reply right by
my email inbox. So, that's an amazing tool. You definitely got a... You've got to come
check this out. You can actually navigate around and do all these searches like
I've just done. Even with a free account. -You know really. You know technology like
this makes the world so small. You know even though these people are on the
other side of the world. You know you can find out literally anything and more
that you would want to find out even in a face-to-face interview. And you still
have the ability to do face to face interviews. Who'd you choose with
FaceTime and other... -And just to like, give you a sneak peek. This person's only
wanting to work 10 hours a week. Which I typically only hire people full times.
Because I want them to dedicate all their they're working energy to me. And
not be distracted with these employers. -Such an ego on this one. -It just works better
that way. See this guy is asking for 580. -For 30 hours.
When you're talking 40-hour workweek is that's typical for Filipinos? I mean, I
know it is in our society. -It seems to me. -Or forty is what they're used to. They're
pretty Americanized. -Yeah. As far as I understand. That's yeah. So, this guy's
asking for more. You know 776
a month. He's only got two years graphics design. So, I'm pretty confident
if I were to offer this guy, he would probably accept $400 a month. And then
we'd negotiate and probably settle at 500. You know something like that. So, somebody is only asking
for... The first person was only asking for 388. That's actually their hope.
Now, I considered a great great blessing. I'm not trying to whittle them
down to the smallest amount. I'm just trying to paint a picture of what's
possible. And really what they are hoping for and what's what's realistic. -And you
know, if you like to say. That is a very reasonable amount of money. Obviously for
us. Even if you were just a you know a one-person company, right? It's just you
and you're just getting going. And this is the first editor that you're hiring.
If you're at a point where you need an editor and you recognize the value of
one, to shell out 400 a month, to take off load all of that work and energy that
you can then take all of your energy. And put it into the business in other ways,
and not have to worry about you know, some of these tactical things that must
get done. But for 400 a month? -Yeah. Let me add with a thought on that. Because even
going back to the Leonardo da Vinci comment, if you are having a hard time
wrapping your head around, no one's going to be able to edit as good as me. You're
probably right. You're probably right. You know, it's going to be really hard to
find somebody who's going to be you know, have the same mindset as you or be able
to read your mind and edit at the same. But if you're going to spend 4 or
5 hundred dollars a month. And they they freed up 80% of your time or even
90% of your time and then you just went in and tweaked it here and there, oh it's
so worth it. It's so worth it to get your life back. -And he's speaking from experience by the
way. -Oh yeah, oh yeah. Absolutely. And all my many friends who experienced YouTube
burnout because they have a daily channel. And they head it into the you
know, they're editing untill 2 a.m. And then they they get up and they have to
start it all over again. Filming, editing, filming, editing. It's just like. -And even
if they enjoy it. Because a lot of people like it. Like I really like this part.
Still... -Have a friend, he was making $200,000 a month. And he quit. He quit his
YouTube channel because he was not able to spend time with his wife and kids.
Now, after he really did quit, he then hired somebody else to be the star of a
show and completely... But it like, it... channel shut down for a little while.
Because he had just like, "I can't continue this on."
-Sounds like a topic for another video. -Now, I have to throw something else out
there. I have a video editing team. And if you're interested in having me and my
team do some editing work for you, we don't typically do editing, but we do
full video production. So, if you're an influencer looking to really build a
huge following to a point to where you're making a seven-figure income,
about 12 to 18 months or just from YouTube, then I'm your guy to talk to you.
-Burn out. -So what are we talking about? "How to hire a YouTube editor?" Hopefully
you'll learn how to do that. And subscribe. Got a lot more great videos
coming your way.
