Hello and welcome to a new episode of
Coffeetime where I discuss fun topics
with you over a cup of coffee. Today's
episode is going to be all about cameras.
Specifically: the best cameras to buy if
you are on a budget, which are also the
best cameras to buy if you're also just
starting out in photography. Any of the
cameras that I talk about in this
video I am going to link in the
description box below so that you can
check them out. If you have experiences
with these cameras and would like to
share them, I would love to read your
comments. If you're curious about
specific features that I don't cover in
this video, also feel free to ask me in
the comments below. For the two cameras
I'm going to recommend in this video,
one of them is a point-and-shoot that is
under one thousand dollars but shoots 4k
video. And the other one is a little bit
under fifteen hundred dollars and is an
interchangeable lens camera. A little
background on me...I am a professional
fine art travel photographer which means
that I shoot New York City photography
and travel photography as a full-time
career. I have been full-time for about
two years. I have one best-selling
photography book that came out in 2014
and a second photography book about
New York City in the snow that is coming out
at the end of this year. The first camera
that I am going to recommend is the Sony
RX100 V. I recommend this camera for
people who are just starting out in
photography as well as for people who
are looking for an amazing travel camera
and for people who are looking for a
camera that is under $1000
and will give them the best bang
for their buck. So as you can see it's so
tiny that it fits in the palm of my hand
and it's also really great for travel
situations where I shooting cityscapes
or I am in an unfamiliar area and I want
to be a little bit more low-key with how
I'm shooting. When I was traveling in
Japan for example a few years ago and I
was in Tokyo and I was in some areas
that I was a little bit unfamiliar with
where I didn't want to look like I had a
giant camera system with me and I wanted
to capture people in their environment
doing candid things - I ended up shooting
the majority of the photos that I shot
for that assignment with the RX100 III
which is the previous version of this
camera. And that's because it was small
enough that I could just take it out of
my pocket, shoot the photo that I needed
to shoot, and quickly just sort of hide
it in my hand. That way I wasn't
drawing too much attention to myself
well I was traveling. The other thing
that I used this camera for a lot is for
vlogging. And the reason that I use it
for vlogging is because it has this
awesome flip-up screen which makes it
really great when you are talking to the
camera. There's nothing that you want
more when you're vlogging than a screen
to see yourself in so you know how you're
framing yourself and you know what's
happening in the background of your scene.
The fact that you can shoot 4k video now with
a camera that is this big also makes
this a really great camera for YouTube
and for video and for vlogging and for
all of those things that you're trying
to do where you may not always want to
bring a bigger camera or multiple lenses.
The other really great thing is that the
RX100 V has the world's fastest
autofocus system. This is great for
people who are learning photography
especially because if you're learning
photography and you're trying to, for
example, photograph people and you really
want to make sure
that you're nailing the focus - because
the camera has the world's fastest
autofocus system it will nail the focus
almost all of the time. It shoots at 20.1
megapixels so these are enormous
beautiful crispy files. And the f-stop
that you can shoot at is 1.8 which is
going to give you that beautiful blurry
background bokeh that so many people love and
adore. The learning curve for how to use
this is quite small. It does have an
electronic viewfinder. This means that
anything that you adjust on the camera
you can see in the viewfinder as it is
happening. This is so invaluable when
you're trying to learn photography
because it allows you to understand
exactly what's happening when you adjust
the shutter speed or the f-stop or the
ISO. An alternative to the RX100 V is for
a hundred dollars less you can get the
RX100 IV. It has the same form factor
which means it is the same exact size - it's
still going to sit in the palm of your
hand. It also shoots 4k video. What they
did differently between the IV and the
V is that they greatly upgraded the
continuous shooting and the focus. Of
course I also recommend the Sony RX100 III.
That is the first RX100 series camera
that I started shooting on and it's
really wonderful. It doesn't shoot 4k and
it's about a hundred dollars less than
the RX100 IV. I would say that the RX100
III is more of a camera that you would
get if you're just really in a pinch and
you really want to have a great camera
again with that electronic viewfinder
and all the fun things that you get with
the RX series but just remember you're
not going to be able to shoot in 4k and
you're also not going to get a lot of
the perks that came with the IV and the
V. The second
camera that I recommend is the Sony
a6500 - right here. The Sony a6500 is a
great camera to start out with if you
really want to learn how to shoot on an
interchangeable lens camera and you're
looking for a camera that is small that
you can travel with that will not be
huge and bulky to carry that will also
give you all of the perks of any other
interchangeable lens camera. The a6500
shoots at 24.2 megapixels so you're
getting again beautiful crispy clear
image quality and just like with the
first camera that I recommended the
a6500 also shoots in 4k. So you're getting
an interchangeable lens camera that
shoots 4k video for under 1500
dollars. That is almost unheard of
currently! And you are also getting an
amazingly fast autofocus system as well.
Something that Sony really excels with -
with their cameras is their focusing
systems and when you're starting out in
photography or even if you're just
traveling and you're looking to capture
really great moments, you really want a
camera that is not going to fail you
when it comes to focusing. The other
really great thing about the a6500 is
that it's got in-body image
stabilization. What does that mean? That
means that if you have slightly shaky
hands, which I know a lot of us do, (I do!).
Because it has five axis in-body image
stabilization, it's going to stabilize
your shots which is phenomenal for all
of us shaky handed people. A little quick
thing about why image stabilization is
so good... Image stabilization is the
reason that I'm able to get so many of
the snow photos that I shoot at night
with low shutter speed. So photos like
this I have shot at extremely low
shutter speed so I get that beautiful
snow effect but I'm able to do that
because of the in-body image
stabilization. Typically if you do that
with a camera that doesn't have that
image stabilization the image will come
out quite blurry and nothing will really be
in focus especially if you combine it
with shaky hands. If you can get a camera
like that you should! It's one of the
best perks I think that comes with this
camera. I have one alternative to the
a6500 and that is the previous version
which is the a6300. You can currently buy
the a6300 with the kit lens which is
the 16-50 mm lens for around
$1250.
The a6300 also shoots 4k video.
It's got an amazing autofocus system as
well. Sony put a lot of effort into their
focusing system for the a6300 and the
a6500 so it's very difficult to go wrong
with the focusing on both of these
cameras. I find both of these cameras to
be equally as awesome for travel as well
as for beginning photography and also
just for all-around photography needs. I
hope that you found all of these
recommendations helpful in this video. If
you did, please feel free to comment
below and also feel free to subscribe to
my channel. I upload two videos a week
about all different kinds of topics and
I'm going to link a playlist up here of
all the recent videos that I have
uploaded to my channel so you can take a
look around and see what my channel is
all about. I hope that you're doing well
wherever you are in the world and I will
see you in the next episode of Coffeetime
later this week. Bye!
