10 Tips for Great Gogokid Classroom Lighting - A Gogokid Brand Contributor Video - Duration: 22:06.Hey guys, Teacher Janice here - it is the season of love
We're all excited for Valentine's Day, and I wanted to check in with a lighting video today
So this lighting video is for you if you are an established online teacher whose lighting was good enough to get started
but it's just not right - maybe something about your classroom changed
maybe you're just ready to upgrade or look at your lighting one more time and see if you can make it a little better and
This lighting video is definitely for you
if you are going through the hiring process, so this video would work for anyone who is being referred by me at gogokid
Or maybe a friend shared this link with you or you found it on YouTube
so I hope it's really helpful to you as you setup your online classroom for the first time or
If you're looking for some tips to kind of look at your classroom and see if you can improve your lighting today
I have 10 things that I like to talk to my referrals about as they set up their online classroom and think about their lighting
This is meant to be a little bit of a checklist. Just check on these products, reflect on them,
See if they're a good fit for your situation
Pause the video, rewatch it, go shopping. Look at your lighting, play with it
This is a very hands-on learning topic - 10 tips to take a look at your gogokid classroom lighting
Let's go - step 1
If you haven't learned a lot about photography
You might have to learn a little bit to really get this just right but lighting is all about angles
So it's not how many lights do I need? Where do I put them? This is not a one-size-fits-all topic
this is really individual to your
particular space and the challenges but one of the most thing helpful things I found out about my online classroom was the idea of
Angles and pointing my lighting in an X across my face
So I have two lamps right on the back of my camera right behind my webcam and I have one
pointed in an X this way across me and one pointed in an X that way and so this is what
eliminates the shadows in my classroom. So one light no matter where I place it is going to create a shadow on the other side
But I want to cross my face in an X
And so that's a tip that I use in my classroom for lighting
But the light you have right now might even be the right light
You need to move it all around and really play with the angles figure out where the shadows are and I hope it's a light
That you can really move put it close to your webcam far away to the side next to behind
This is an angles game
So as you look at the lighting ingredients that you currently own for free
I want you to take a moment and play with the angles. Move them all around your classroom as you play with them
I wanted to share two of the most helpful YouTube videos that were helpful to me two years ago
When I started as an online teacher, so I'm going to share them right here. And then the links are down below
So you're gonna see some great examples
about
Overhead lighting and how its positive or negative in your classroom, and you'll also hear some great tips
From someone who has a photography background, which is just a wonderful resource
So these are two of my very favorite online teachers and I want to share out their video and give a shout out
To learn all about the game of lighting and really understand the journey that we're going on
Step Two - Again, if at all possible, I don't want you to have to spend money on this project. We're here to make money not to spend it
So maybe your current lighting is okay, but maybe you can change out the lightbulbs
So white light bulbs for daylight bulbs can make a big difference
you might be able to take the lamp that you're already using but change out the light bulbs and
Not have to buy a whole new lamp - white light can make a huge difference in your lighting. So step two
I would try changing out your light bulbs to be daylight bulbs
step 3
So many online teachers use this lamp - they use this lamp because they already have it in their basement from their days of college
So many of us spent fifteen, twenty, twenty-five dollars on this five arm floor lamp, maybe we got it at Walmart
Maybe we got it at Target
But many of us already have this five arm floor lamp hanging out in our house
so I have seen some teachers place this behind their webcam and actually shine the light away from
And bounce it off of a wall to have a soft glow back at them that doesn't have shadows
I've seen other teachers turn it around pointed right at their face, but maybe not all of them right in their eyes
Maybe all of them pointed a slightly different direction
Again to kind of cancel out all of the shadows
but this
five arm floor lamp can go right in back of your webcam and have so many options of ways that you can position the lights and
You may already have one in your garage in your basement that you haven't even used in a long time
Try it as is try it many different angles and if it's not working
Try switching it out with the white daylight bulbs. You might already have a lamp that you can use for this project in your house
Hopefully by step four you're getting a little bit closer
But maybe there's still a shadow in one place in your classroom a dark spot something
That's not quite right and no matter how you position the lights you have. You just can't fix it
So you might want to look at a fill light. So a fill light is a small light
That's just going to target that one area rather than having the job of lighting up your entire space
I've seen some great fill lights used. I actually use a fill light in my classroom
I have the two main lights that I already talked about coming across me as an X and then actually over here I teach in
our master bedroom and this is our bedside table and we have another lamp here and
Sometimes I don't think of that lamp as my online classroom
But that lamp although it isn't back far enough for my webcam. It actually does shine on my face
So it is part of our house lighting situation
My master bedroom does not have any overhead lighting on but that bedside table lamp on
My husband's side of the bed does have to be on for my lighting to be balanced in my online classroom
Let me show you what it looks like without the fill light. This is my online classroom without that third fill light. It's okay
There are parts of my face that are well lit, but the lighting is not even and there definitely are shadows
I can definitely see my hands a lot more as I move my props and there are definitely dark spots in my classroom
So the lighting is very uneven. I'm going to turn that light back on some great options for fill lighting. . .
I've seen teachers go to their garage and get small work lights that they might have already in their garage and
Actually put them at the base of their classroom on the floor and shine them up on their background
Many teachers can get their face nice and bright but maybe their background is really dark and full of shadows
So some people have a separate light just for their background
This is also very common in teachers that are doing green screening or using manycam
They might need to light up their backgrounds separately to have an even backdrop for their digital effects
Another great fill light that I've seen is this one. This is also a great light for travel
So the next two fill light options are also great travel options
This light is really thin it folds up when you're not using it and it can spin in many many different tilted directions
So if you're trying to target one tiny area of your classroom
It's hard to get a big lamp to point where you need to go
But these little tiny lamps can go all over the place and they have different settings for how bright the light is
so that you can really balance out the lighting in your classroom and
They're super easy to take with you on the go if you're a teacher who travels?
Another great travel option would be the clip-on selfie light
So I do have one of these I have never used it shining directly on my face for my personal health needs
That is too bright for me
That would really bother my eyes
But I've used the selfie light pointed away from me bouncing off a wall or a piece of white poster board
Coming back at me with a nice warm light that takes up a lot of space all diffused
So that can be a really great option, too
And if that's the lighting you're used to using that's lighting that can travel with you on the go
That's also lighting that you could take with you to fill in
imperfect lighting as you travel because
Often when you're traveling, you're not sure what the lighting will be like when you get there and you can get it all straight
But you wish you had just one more light
So the selfie lights are super inexpensive and they can solve a lot of problems for teachers whose lighting is close
But not quite good enough
Do take a look at the battery life of the selfie lights though - mine comes with a very very short
Charging cord and it doesn't last a super long time
So if you're a teacher who teaches all night or a long morning of classes
Really, really look when you're shopping for selfie lights if that is your classroom
lighting for the whole day or the whole night or the whole session
Decide whether you need to have two on deck that are always charging
Or if you could upgrade to a model that has a longer battery life - another great option to warm up your classroom
Just tweak the lighting a little bit and fill in some of the shadows can be Christmas lights
I've seen some teachers that are able to hang Christmas lights in their classroom, and it just really
Cancels out all of those little pesky spots that were left that had shadows
So again, you might have Christmas lights already on hand
If you have nice white Christmas lights, those can really warm up your classroom and provide a homey warmth all year round
So maybe go down to the basement, up to the attic, out to the garage, wherever you keep them
Bring them into your online classroom regardless of what time of year it is
Hang them up and see if they can help you out with your lighting if it all possible
We'd like to use things that you already have on hand. So if you are still with me at Step five, it's possible
You don't have anything in your house that is going to work to properly light your online classroom
And maybe you're off to Amazon to go shopping. I totally get it.
I had to invest in some lighting in my classroom as well
So one thing that I didn't shop for but that I've seen a lot of teachers have a lot of success for is a professional
photography kit and I would have assumed that would be much more expensive than actually this umbrella kit can work really really well because
They already have a built-in diffuser. So I'll show you what I use for diffusing my lights in a little bit
I do not use the umbrella style photography kit, but the idea what diffusing light is that it's not pointed straight at your face
But it's spread out over a larger area
So that's much less harsh for your eyes and creates a much better final product
So the umbrella lights take up a ton of space which is why I can't use them in my personal classroom
But if you have the space for it
and it's a dedicated area for teaching the lighting from these can be excellent and
The cost really isn't that great. Step 6, these are gooseneck lamps. This is the personal choice that I made in my classroom.
In my classroom
I have a very skinny space. You've heard me say this on this channel before it's about the dimensions of a bathtub
So what you see is what you get
This is pretty much my entire classroom
But I have an IKEA table right underneath my computer that goes back to the wall and that is the end of my space
it's like a mini college sized dining table and there's about two inches on either side of my desk where I can fit a
really skinny gooseneck lamp
So that's what I have is I have one on the floor
Coming up on both sides of the little teeny space next to my desk and I love the gooseneck
lamp because I can turn it many different ways and I do adjust the lighting in my classroom a few times during the year
Based on the window that I have behind me - windows are not helpful in your online classroom
But the space that I have does have a window so I keep the blinds closed
365 days a year and try to limit that lighting coming in and further
Messing up my perfect lighting that I have. You don't want overhead lighting on you don't want window light
You don't want natural light at all
You really want to be able to keep the lighting in your space consistent
Especially from the first class you teach to the last one and sometimes I teach at night - sometimes I teach in the morning -
I don't want the lighting in my classroom to change - right now
I'm filming in the middle of the afternoon while my daughter takes a nap and
If I was to set up my lighting right now and get it just right
But then come into my classroom tomorrow morning when it's dark
The lighting isn't going to be the same if I'm using the window as part of the equation
So that's a quick side note that's relevant about windows, but I use two gooseneck lamps because they're so flexible
And anytime my lighting is not just right
It's just a simple twist of the light that I can do in my classroom
particular gooseneck lamps that I bought also have light bulbs that don't ever need to be changed and although that's a tall order and I'm
Not sure if I believe it it sounded very appealing to me as an online teacher
Because I don't want my lighting to go out in the middle of class.
If you are using regular light bulbs
please make sure that you have an emergency kit next to you for either a backup lighting source till class is over or that you
could change those light bulbs super super fast while you're teaching
I have two different lights and I can reach them from where I am. So here's number one. And here's number two
so right now all I have is that light that we talked about on our bedside table and
This is not sufficient to be hired. This is not going to get me a job as an online teacher
this is not going to get me students if I film my profile video like this and
Parents are not going to come back to my classroom. It's way too dark
So just know that when you see some of our example videos
This is not the lighting you're looking for
If I add one lamp
Which I did when I started, it's better,
But there's definitely still a bright side to my classroom and a super, super dark area over here
So it's not right - if I turn that light off and I turn this one on
It's just a little bit of light because these lights have multiple settings - is it better than it was?
Absolutely. Is it ready for Showtime?
It's not and I also have a lot of shine, a lot of glare, and a lot of shadows
So we're not there just yet. I have the lighting off - just a little brighter again. We're getting there
I have a fill light on my bedside table. I have light on one side of my classroom but angles for the win
I really do need to create the X to have a bright warm classroom.
I promised I would talk more about diffusing. I do not have fancy photography umbrella lights. I have these gooseneck lamps and right over them
They have shopping bags - regular grocery shopping bags and some parchment paper
Inside and that's what I use for my diffuser
It does make a big difference in how long I can stay in my classroom lighting in terms of my eyes - Step 7
You must be getting really close - if you haven't already done, so please take a picture of your current setup
Take a picture in the classroom if at all possible
as close a picture as your actual online teaching
Dimensions and lighting that you'll be teaching or interviewing in and send that picture to the teacher who referred you to go locate
They are ahead of you in this journey. They have fought the struggles. They have ridden this struggle bus
They have been through this journey
They have tips and tricks and if they look at your lighting they can help troubleshoot what's left for you?
So get it as close as you can do your homework, do the hard work, but please use that referring teacher as a resource
They are usually very happy to help you
So if you are going through the hiring process and you don't have a referral teacher yet
Know how to reach me
my referral code is down below and my email address - send me pictures of your classroom after you've signed in with my referral code
And I'm happy to help you troubleshoot your lighting and get it across the finish line
So you're ready to go through the hiring process?
If you didn't choose me as your referring teacher, and you used another teacher
Make them earn their money and go ahead back and ask them send them a picture of your lighting
Sometimes you're not sure what you can ask them for help with - you can ask them for help with anything on the way to getting
Hired most teachers that I know are happy to help other people
Troubleshoot and get set up an online teaching because it's just such a rewarding career
Steps eight and nine are related
If you can't get your lighting right another thing that often improves lighting is that lighting might not be the problem at all
It might actually be the quality of your camera
so I personally teach on a MacBook Pro and I have my built-in camera is what I use for teaching I own a
Logitech external camera. I personally have chosen not to use it. So
External webcams are all the rage - people show before-and-after photos all the time of how they magically transform their lighting
It might be the best solution for you
My laptop moves all over the house all the time. And so me having to plug in an external camera every single day
It's like a last resort for me if my lighting can't be fixed in any other way
I will move to an external webcam if I need to - I'm glad to have it as a backup option
I was curious to see what a difference it would make in my lighting. So I did purchase one but
Personally since my laptop moves a lot
I was not comfortable with having an external camera as my final solution
Also, I feel like every time you plug in one more thing to your computer
It's one more thing that can be loose or go wrong or malfunction
And when I'm troubleshooting in the online classroom
I want to have as few things to check that could possibly be the root of the problem as possible
So my logitech external camera is something I have in my bag of tricks that I do use
Sometimes but it's not my day-to-day online teaching camera. It is just a backup item that I've explored and tried
This is the logitech external camera that people really, really like so I'm sharing that out to you
You might want to try it people rave about this camera
If you are going to invest in an external for online teaching, this is probably the one seems to be unanimous in the teacher community
Officially speaking,
gogokid does not recommend using digital software in the classroom - many cam cam twist - webcam x - sparkocam
all of the things in the genre are not officially recommended by gogokid
They can cause lag in the classroom. They can cause an additional level of teacher IT risk
So let me say that first - that being said if you are a Mac user
You might wish to dabble in cam twist - cam twist has some built-in lighting features as well and cam twist is free.
There are teachers who are able to run digital software in the classroom
We are not prohibited from using it
But if you are going to go live with digital webcam software in the classroom
You need to have a plan B ready to go. There's any lag in that classroom
There are any problems going on you need to change back to your regular camera.
You need to go with the slightly darker lighting and you need to continue that class
but if you're a Mac user, what a great time to download the free software and sit in your classroom with your regular lighting and
Adjust the couple of settings that there are and just see what a difference it makes for your lighting.
Your students may not even know that you're using cam twist as your webcam that day - you are using it to improve your lighting and
You don't need to do all the things you can still use your regular 2d 3d props your same friendly reward system
You can still use all the things that you're used to you
Don't need to go down a giant rabbit hole and become a 100% digital teacher
But a lot of people don't think all of that is for them
But they don't realize that cam twist can be really helpful as one way to upgrade your lighting
So in this video, I gave you some tips to explore in your lighting
I hope that there's something in here for everyone whether you're setting up your online classroom
Or you're an established online teacher looking to change your setup and upgrade it in some way
Step 10 is to share with the community as you're looking for solutions to your lighting
You love to see before and after pictures of other teachers
And so I encourage you to kind of pay it forward for the next generation of online teachers the next people that are searching lighting
Facebook group show them a before-and-after with your webcam take a picture of your favorite light - drop an amazon link if this video was helpful
Share it in a Facebook group
There's always someone with a silent struggle with lighting who's afraid to say something about it
But every time they can see what is working for you what you finally got working and what your solution was
It is encouraging and it helps them go back to their online classroom and fight the good fight and try again to get their lighting just right
so our student base is the strongest when all teachers have the best lighting and when all teachers have the best teaching
We want all students to be getting the best class experience they can so they stay at our company
And continue to take classes with all of us
So anything you can do to pay it forward after you get your lighting
People love seeing before and after pictures of your lighting and if you don't want to share before it's fine
but share a picture of your classroom share a reward system share your seasonal background share something and
Often people will say hey your lighting is fabulous
How did you do it? and you can share out with them and give them some tips
People will be so grateful if you take the time to share
But you have worked really hard if you're still watching this video and applying all of these tips
You've worked really hard to get your online classroom
Just right - you are a tremendous resource to other teachers - consider sharing out. What did work for you?
So other teachers can reflect on their setup
I'll leave some of my favorite Facebook groups down in the description box below as great places to share
I love when you share your lighting on Instagram and you tag me. I love to celebrate the journey
you've been on. share this video with anyone who might help and don't forget to subscribe to this channel for future online teacher content
Thank you so much for stopping by for lighting tips today. I appreciate all of you. Happy teaching!
