Due to your generous donations from last year's giving day
UMW libraries has been able to update specific equipment and workspaces
and provide more resources for our students
see an example of your funds at work in the digital archiving lab
Opened in 2014 the digital archiving lab supports digitization projects and
instruction across campus. The lab continues to grow in its services thanks
to the generous support of our donors.
Our rare book scanner is designed specifically for the digitization
of bound or fragile materials and has allowed us
to collaborate on projects such as the multi-year undertaking of
scanning the biology departments herbarium collection.
As well as working with local community partners to preserve our heritage such as
the Mason's 1668 Bible upon which George Washington took his Masonic oath
and the National Park Service's Civil War Diaries.
Our flatbed scanners and software offer the ability to digitize not only documents
and prints, but photographic film negatives and positives as well.
Slides and film can be safely set in templates for high resolution scanning.
Our most recent addition is a high resolution DSLR camera.
This camera has allowed us to digitize items
that were otherwise too large for most scanners with the
assistance of students the majority of the library's World War 1 posters were
digitized and added to our accessible online collections. All equipment and
support services are available for student, alumni, and faculty use.
Over the five years this space has been open it has been exciting to see students
learning new technical skills as they work on complex digitization and data projects.
Outside the digital archiving lab is our convergence gallery where
interactive touchscreen kiosks allow us to showcase these student and faculty
projects as well as our own digitized collections as part of these larger exhibitions.
Come by and visit us and we will be glad
to assist with your next project or exhibition.
Thank You for Giving to UMW libraries
your support is appreciated.
