CABAT TechBytes iOS series video 2: A Tale of Two Voices - Siri Vs. VoiceOver - Duration: 6:50.

Hello and welcome to the second, uh, video for the CABAT TechBytes.

Today's video is "A Tale of Two Voices: Siri vs. Voiceover."

Voiceover is the 'reader'; Siri is the 'doer'.

Give you a minute to let this sink in; Voiceover is the 'reader', Siri is the 'doer'.

We're not going to spend a lot of time on Voiceover this video...

... that's going to be next video where we learn how to turn on-and-off Voiceover, and other things like that.

But this video is going to be working with Siri.

Siri is ...

... an application that will allow you to get things done...

... more automated.

You don't have to do it manual; you don't have to type in those text messages, type in those emails, ...

...type in that appointment, or that reminder.

It also can give you information like the weather, the time, the sports scores, ...

... all those kinds of things.

It's that assistant that you never knew you wanted; but once you have it, you never want to give it back!

So, there are several ways to invoke or utilize Siri.

But, before we do that, think of this: ...

Using Siri is a conversation; it's a call-and-answer, a back-and-forth.

You ask it something, it responds to you; asks you something, you respond to it.

But, you have to think of a few things...

... pronunciation, cadence, the way you speak, and the phrases you use.

Now let's spend some time, uh, giving you a few examples , of how to make Siri work, uh, best for you.

The first thing is, how do we invoke Siri?

There are several ways to to it, the first would be...

... if you're running an iPhone or an iOS device that has a Home button down at the bottom...

... you just hold that down...

... and you'll hear a tone, like this [*tone sounds*]

[*second tone sounds*]

Now, the first tone tells you that Siri's listening...

... the second tone tells you she's done.

That's one way to do it. If you're running an iPhone 10, you use the home button on the side of the phone.

You hold that down, and you'll hear those same tones.

If you're running an iPhone 7 or later, or, uh, one of the newer iPads...

... you can invoke the "Hey, Siri" [*tone sounds*] - there you go - setting, in your Siri settings, ...

...and, if you say that phrase, like I just did, it'll activate Siri for you.

The next thing we're going to talk about is, what can Siri do?

I'm going to use the button for this example, and I'll ask it a question.

[*tone sounds*] What time is it? [*second tone sounds*] [Siri's voice:] It's 4:12 pm.

[*tone sounds*] What's the weather today?

[*second tone sounds*] [Siri's voice:] It's currently clear and 42 degrees in Richmond.

[Siri's voice] Expect mostly cloudy skies, starting in the afternoon...

[Siri's voice] Temperatures are heading down from 42 degrees this afternoon to 35 tonight.

Now I did that: I held the button down, got the tone I wanted, let the button go, and I can ask my question.

I'll show you how we can use this with a text, but this time, I'll use the phrase.

Hey, Siri [*tone sounds*] Send text to Greg [*second tone sounds*]

[Siri's voice] What do you want to say?

Hey, comma, thanks for being my camera man on this video, exclamation point, really appreciate it, exclamation point.

[*tone sounds*] {Siri's voice] Your message to Greg says, 'Hey, thanks for being my camera man on this video...

[Siri's voice] ...really appreciate it.' Ready to send it? [*tone sounds*]

Yes.

[*tone sounds*] [Siri's voice] OK, it's sent.

Notice that only invoked her the first time, and we had a kind of a conversation back-and-forth.

I told her what I wanted, she asked me a question, I responded... and so on and so forth.

Another cool thing you can do is schedule apppointments.

But, before we do that, think about the way I phrased my questions, or the statement I wanted, to Greg;

I spoke the comma and the exclamation point.

If you want punctuation in your messages...

... so that people don't know that you dictated them, & it looks like you really spent the time writing them down...

... SAY your punctuation, like 'comma', 'period', 'new line', 'question mark', 'exclamation point'.

The next thing we're going to talk about is scheduling an appointment, ...

... because who wants to forget that all-important dinner date or meeting with the boss?

Hey, Siri [*tone sounds*]

Schedule an appointment for tomorrow at 9am entitled, "iOS Video Three".

[*tone sounds*] [Siri's voice] It's on your calendar for tomorrow from 9am to 10am.

[Siri's voice] The appointment is called, "iOS Video Three".

Let me know if you want to make any changes [*tone sounds*]

I don't, so I cancelled that. I didn't cancel it, I just made it so she wasn't listening anymore.

But, what if I don't remember my appointments?

Hey, Siri [*tone sounds*] When's my next appointment?

[*second tone sounds*] [Siri's voice] Your next appointment on Saturday at 1pm.

[Siri's voice] It's called, "Sabers vs. Flyers"

Not exactly true, let me see if I can do it a different way.

Hey, Siri [*tone sounds*] Do I have an appointment tomorrow?

[*2nd tone sounds*] [Siri's voice] I didn't find any appointments for tomorrow.

Well, interesting, because, as you saw, we scheduled that appointment.

And yet it still didn't go... uh, didn't go on my calendar.

So sometimes, having a quote "Smart Assistant" like this, doesn't always do the best job.

Thanks for tuning in...

... that'll wrap up this video on "Siri vs. Voiceover: a Tale of Two Voices".

Join us on the next video where we really dive into What is Voiceover...

... how do I turn it on, and how do I make it stop?

Uh, feel free to follow our videos at ...

Audition Prep Intro Video - Duration: 2:22.

Hi, this is Julie Hennrikus from Your Ladders Your Ladders is an online school that I've created to help performing artists get over

obstacles in their path. Business obstacles, administrative obstacles, that they either don't have the tools to deal with or they don't wanna

deal with so they're avoiding. But they're starting to get the way of their paths. And so I have created a series of videos call Five Arts

thoughts to talk about different administrative tasks that artists can think about

to help move them forward, to produce work, to produce work better, to level up their career. And I wanted to do a video about auditioning

If you're an actor or dancer or singer, you are your own small business, and a part of that business is often auditioning.

And I have been on the administrative side of auditions several times. I have run them.

So I have a sense of from that standpoint where there can be challenges or obstacles that get in folks path to success. And I wanted

to create a 5 Arts Thoughts video to help folks avoid those challenges

But there were more than five-in fact there's a fairly substantial video. So what I did is I created a page on my site. If you go to

YourLadders.com/auditionprep, you can see the whole video and there's also a

downloadable checklist that you can have in front of you as you're preparing for auditions.

Again these are the administrative side of auditions. I leave the monologue choices, the song choices, what you wear, all those things

to your coaches, to whatever group you have that helps you figure out how to best put your best foot forward artistically

I'm here to help you put your best foot forward administratively and that's what this video and

this download are about. So go to YourLadders.com/AuditionPrep

Download the worksheet, the checklist, and break legs. The world needs you to do your work. I'm here to help you do that.

Thanks so much
