Homes and roads were flooded, Roofs damaged, Trees uprooted.
Hurricane Florence left its mark on New Hanover County, and while
Community is looking better on the outside, there is still a
a lot to take care of, we are still recovering.
From the start, the county has been there to help make
hurricane recovery a little easier.
Our Building Safety Department issued trade permits for
free through the end of December. That way, you could
get started on home repairs, without the extra cost of
permitting fees. We extended office hours and had a
satellite site to make sure contractors and residents could
get the permits they needed, when they needed them.
Building Safety inspectors were also out in the days following
Florence, assessing damage and helping the community understand
the extent of property loss. Their work helped shape the
county's plan as we moved into recovery.
Our Planning and Land Use Department worked with the Board
of Commissioners and Planning Board to amend the county's zoning
ordinance to allow for temporary relocation housing. We wanted to
make it easy for residents to stay on their property in a temporary unit,
either theirs or one from FEMA, while their home is repaired.
Immediately after the storm, our Engineering Department pumped
water out of neighborhoods and off flooded roads to help ease the
burden on our community. Their work continues today as they work
with residents to clear drainage ditches, repair sink holes, and
manage stormwater concerns. Most of what they do is beyond the scope
of what North Carolina counties are required to do, but it's important to
our residents so it's important to us.
Our Tax Department is also working with residents, to make sure next
year's property bill accurately reflects the condition of homes and
businesses. Your tax bill should be fair and that means reporting your
property's damage to our Tax office, so your 2019 property
taxes can be calculated correctly.
It takes all of us, working together, to rebuild. And New Hanover
County remains committed to our residents, our businesses, and
visitors, as we continue on the road to Florence recovery.
