StopGap in the Community: The Stroller Video - Duration: 3:08.

[background music]

Getting around with a stroller has completely changed Toronto to us.

Like the landscape of the city, you know, we love, and I love, especially before I became a mom.

It's suddenly different, like I'm not able to go the same places I could normally, you know.

There definitely have been times recently that I've just-

"Ah, maybe I'll go in there" but then I see how many steps there are

and I'm like, "ah, I'm not even gonna bother"

What has limited the accessibility of going to restaurants,

and shops, and, you know, doing certain things especially in this Queen sector.

Every trip is at least 50% longer, if not more, than if I didn't have a stroller with me.

I have to plan everything out in terms of where stairs are, what stations are accessible,

what stroller I'm using, if I need to carry it.

One of the strollers I have doesn't fit on streetcars.

It's very inconvenient.

I'm a single dad, so I have to take the kids everywhere.

So every errand I run, I have the kids with me.

Yeah, so I use it all over the city.

'Cause I am - I am walking everywhere with her.

I'm using my stroller every day walking to all of her, um, programs

I'm walking to the grocery store, the shops, coffee shops,

So just the daily errands - running those is more frustrating.

When you go to a building, any building, you have to like, plan it out.

So you have to figure out which entrance is accessible,

and you have to walk around and find that entrance and then go in that way,

and then you have to find the elevators.

Being able to lift the stroller on the stairs

and get the door open

um, would be pretty much impossible.

The challenge sometimes though, also is that that next step is so narrow

that if there isn't a way electronically to open the door

um, you're trying to hold on to your stroller and keep it from going off the edge

and trying to pry open the door at the same time and navigate your way through the doorway

so that can be a bit of a challenge as well.

We see StopGaps around the city a lot.

Near my house, there's a lot of, uh, StopGaps that I see on the street

and I always appreciate seeing the StopGap because I can get into the building without worrying.

Where there are bigger steps, it's been most helpful to have StopGap

make it easier for the stroller to push up onto the higher level step.

I've also to be quite honest told many, um, shops to get one.

So like if it's just one step that's getting in the way,

I said, "hey, have you heard of, uh, StopGap?"

And they're like, "no", I'm like, "tell your boss!"

*laughs*

"tell the person who owns this place"

because it will just make other people's lives so much easier

and I'm more likely to come into your shop.

For me, and I know for other people using different types of mobility devices

it's the difference between running an errand and not running an errand sometimes

and just making moving around the city with something with wheels easier.

Cap and Gown Video - Duration: 1:47.

I just picked up my cap and gown, but I just kind of pretended that it was a

thing in a plastic bag. I didn't really look at it. It's definitely going to be hard

because it's really, I've had a really positive impact being here, but I think

that I am ready to move on to a new chapter in my life, which is I think

really good that Merrimack has prepared me.

It feels surreal to graduate from college.

I really can't even believe it's already been four years, but I guess that

really speaks to how great these four years have been for me. Everybody says

when they come out of high school that these are the fastest four years of your life, but

I'll tell you college is that much faster. Make every moment count and

really leave without any regrets. It feels crazy. I feel like I blinked. And

you know everyone says that it goes by so fast, but I think, you know, as you're

actually living it, you realize how fast it is going by. It's really sad, you know,

I feel like I've grown to love Merrimack and get to know all these, like the

faculty and staff so well. So it's kind of crazy to see it go by so fast.

The biggest advice that I'd give to upcoming freshmen would be to not be afraid to

reinvent yourself or get involved on campus. You really should do the things

that you thought you never would.

There are just so many things to try, and I

really recommend trying anything even if it's scary. It's such a great way to make

friends and expand your time here at Merrimack.

If I could send one message

to my parents, I'm getting emotional because you know I can't express

how much that this opportunity means to me and having been able to be at

Merrimack, and I would not be able to be here had it not, you know, been for them.

It helped me get to this point in my life, become the person that I am today,

and without them, I really don't know where I'd be.
