Waching daily Oct 21 2018

It all began in my grade 12 year. I was sitting in my world issues class, a

class that always seemed to grasp my attention. And on one particular day in

class we weren't going over any ordinary topic, we were talking about people in

history who have made massive changes in the world. People like Malcolm X, Martin

Luther King, Gloria Steinem, Lewis Tappan Solomon Northup, William Wilberforce,

Gandhi, the list goes on and on. We took these amazing people and we broke

down their lives, looking for common characteristics that they all shared.

What we found was that there's a bunch of unique traits that made them very

different, but there was one thing they all had in common. They all took small

consistent actions towards the attainment of their dreams of their

goals. That day in class my teacher proved to

us that we can make a change in the world by committing to a small

consistent action. So I left that class with a burning desire within me to

make a change within my community. At the age of 17 years old I didn't know how I

was going to do this. I mean how am I going to change the world? So on my

walks home from school, every day that passed I had the question running

through my mind, how am I gonna change the world?

And one day it hit me, literally as I stumbled over my first piece of garbage.

And on that day I picked up my first coffee cup. Every single day that passed

after I picked up that first piece of garbage I would put my teachers theory

to the ultimate test. I would take the small consistent action of picking up

garbage and put it to practice. It began with a plastic bag. I'd fill up one to

two bags on my walks home from school. Then it led to two or three plastic

bags, and about five days before summer break my best friend, and co-founder

Dillon Mendes saw me while he was driving home, he pulled over, rolled down

his window and he said "Sam what are you doing?" I explained

it to him this theory that, small consistent actions lead to massive

changes. Dillon was intrigued and then he made the statement that changed both

of our futures forever, he said "Sam let's do something with this!",

and that was the day that PickWaste was born. Pickwaste is a community initiative

that was started out of the necessity to clean up our common home. We clean up for

one hour, once a week and spread awareness about the pollution solution.

We do this through speaking at expos, high schools, elementary schools, and

universities. We empower people that they have the potential to make a change in

their society. You know we believe that small consistent actions will have

massive global impact. And unless you're Elon Musk, and creating electric cars, we

believe that you have to start small. We believe that you have to start with PickWaste.

At PickWaste we believe that the vitality of humanity is a reflection of

the condition of the environment. Think about it, what are the three major

resources we need to live? Water, food, and air. The water we pollute is ultimately

the water that we drink, and the fish that swim in it is the food that we eat!

The soil we pollute grows the vegetables that we eat, and the air we pollute

becomes the oxygen that we breathe! This common misconception that the

environment and humanity is separate has been going on for generations.

At PickWaste we're striving to bridge that gap.

That's why we're leading these clean ups, and empowering individuals, telling them that

vitality of humanity and the environment is one in the same, and empowering them

to act on this knowledge. Since our inception of July 1st 2017 we have

completed over 45* cleanups and have collected over 550* bags of garbage. We

now have over 4,000 followers on Instagram, and have a volunteer base of

over 200 people in the city of Pickering. We've received incredible community

recognition from mayors across the Durham Region, and Pickering news advertiser.

We would love for you to become a part of this initiative, and PickWaste.

It's our time to put these words into practice, let's go PickWaste!
