Well, good morning, good afternoon, and good evening. Welcome to English. So we get to
do a lot of writing in here and I am going to be your instructor: Brandon Rocke. So, a
couple quick things, real fast. Number 1: Let's make sure we get the books, alright?
Even though we're not on campus we still need a read things. So, you have two course
books. You have a textbook and you have a novel. Alright? We're going to talk about that more later
on but the big thing is this: whether you get it actually in person because you
love flipping pages, or you want to get digital copy of them, that's fine.
I just needs you to read, alright? Secondly, you need to manage your time
for this course. We're going to have a lot of things to do, a lot of time is going to be
taken up on your end. So, even though we're not meeting in class every day, you
still need to make sure we get stuff done. Alright,
You're going to have journals, quizzes, assignments to do, discussion boards to post to - it's going to
take more than just three minutes to do this stuff, so make sure you plan ahead.
We want you to pass, but you've got to plan ahead. Alright? So, before I get
going a couple more things, let's look at the course page itself. If you've not
gotten used to Canvas yet, you'll probably want to start getting used to
looking at it. This is what your Canvas page should look like in some respect,
alright? I've done a few things for you to help you out. Number one: this is your
home screen. It looks delightful. It has all the kind of navigational things you will
need as we go through the course, alright? Additionally, if you go over to the
left-hand side, you click on Modules . . . What will happen here is the course will be
laid out for you, alright, week by week. So, every week we have information going
I will have things posted for you. Your assignment will be found through here.
Your prompts be found through here. Your quizzes will be found through here, and
you'll be basically relying on this every week to kind of navigate the
course and get through it. So, you'll want to keep an eye on that.
Additionally, look over at the syllabus here. Pull that up real fast.
You'll notice I've saved it in a doc and a PDF just to make this easy for you.
However, this is the big thing. So, you will need to take some time to cruise
through the syllabus, make sure you understand it. By all means, if you have
questions, make sure you ask. I would rather you know more about the syllabus than be
confused by it, but you will need to take a quiz on this. So, suggestion is we look
through it. I gave you all the course requirements. I gave you what reading
responses we'll need to do. Different other assignments, discussion boards - I'll
come back to that. At the very very bottom as well,
alright, you will have a map of basically everything we're doing, every
week. So, if you don't have a planner, probably should buy one. I have what
needs to be done, what discussion posts need to be done as well as what
assignments need to be due. Alright? So, keep an eye on all of these things. Now,
the last little part I want you at least understand is where the discussion board
is - one of the first thing you've got to do this first week. Click on discussions,
open it up. The first one you have here I have the little instructions for you, so read
them, make sure you post. Alright, good rule of thumb in discussion boards, if you
think it's too short, I'm probably I think it's too short.
So, put yourself in the position of instructor. Is it long enough, alright?
So, hopefully, that's it for right now. You'll be seeing my face more as we go
through the course but welcome, learn Canvas a little bit, and you'll see me soon.
