Welcome back to Psych-Minded. I'm your host Kalley Marie and today we are going
to be continuing on with our spooky psychology series and discuss
parapsychology. What is parapsychology exactly? Stick around and find out.
What is parapsychology? Well, I had to do some research to really dive into this
field of psychology to find out what it is all about. Parapsychology is the study
of paranormal occurrences and phenomenon. Paranormal psychologists work to conduct
tests that attempt to try to explain some of these unexplained occurrences.
Parapsychologists study three main areas of paranormal phenomenon. Number one is
ESP. ESP stands for extrasensory perception or your sixth sense.
This could include intuition a sense of clairvoyance. They look into all of those
different possibilities and run different tests to try to see if there
is some sort of explanation. The next area of study that
parapsychology deals with is near-death experiences. So this would include any
sort of strange phenomenon surrounding near-death experiences or even
out-of-body experiences. Lastly parapsychology studies telekinesis which
is essentially being able to move objects with just your mind or
essentially with energy. Telekinesis is also called psychokinesis and this would
be some of those classic spoon bending experiments that you've seen people do
where people are able to bend spoons with their mind. That would essentially
be a parapsychology experiment. So really interesting stuff right there. So much
that can be involved in those three different specific areas that they study.
They really can get in-depth into some strange things. Parapsychology also
deals with things like astral projection or out-of-body experiences like I
mentioned and altered state of consciousness, even things like shamanism
and telepathy and other mystical experiences. The thing about
parapsychology is -- it's not a formal academic discipline. It moreso
encompasses the different studies and the different areas of parapsychology
that are looked at. You couldn't necessarily go to school for a
parapsychology degree. Thiis would be more something that as a psychologist you
might take a special interest in -- the specific subject.
If you want to go to college and major in parapsychology, unfortunately I
don't think that is an option yet. It comes down to more of a discipline and a
specialty. There's still a lot of bias I guess there. That was kind of
what I noticed in my research -- there was a lot of questioning as to whether this
discipline should be taken seriously or not. I personally think it's
fascinating and I'll get to why so stick around till the very end.
I mentioned they do certain scientific testing. How in the world
do we do a legitimate psychological test for this sort of phenomenon and that's
where the problem comes in and that's why the American Psychological
Association and even a lot of psychologists have a hard time accepting
this as a legitimate science. The testing actually does yield positive
results. They have done tests that have found that there is evidence that these
experiences are completely legitimate and real. However the biggest problem
that they found is that they cannot replicate these studies. These paranormal
occurrences tend to be a one-time thing or very specific to a person or a time
in place. When it comes down to psychological testing and even
scientific testing, that doesn't work. Unfortunately the way that scientific
tests are designed, is you have to have a control. So there isn't really a way to
have a neutral thing to compare those experiences to. So that's been one of the
major problems that they've seen the testing for. This really isn't the same
as testing for a human trait. We know that human traits tend to be universal
or they happen to multiple people or they at least happen to enough people
that like I said we can have a control group or a specific study group to look
at in science. With parapsychology we just don't have that
yet. That's why I mentioned that psychologists will typically specialize
in one area or look at certain case studies because it's really difficult to
make an entire degree out of it. So what is parapsychology NOT? You may be a
little confused because I mentioned that it includes paranormal phenomenon but
there is a certain criteria in parapsychology for what they constitute
as paranormal phenomenon. Some of the things NOT included in parapsychology
would be things like witchcraft or aliens or Bigfoot or the Loch Ness
monster. Even surprising, astrology is not included. So we want to
be really careful when we refer to paranormal phenomenon in parapsychology.
Like I mentioned there are those three specific areas that they look at.
So my favorite part about studying this and learning about parapsychology is the
implications. Even though it's not formally recognized as a discipline we
can still gain a lot of knowledge from the researchers and the studies that are
done in parapsychology. There are about five or six dedicated journals in the
psychological field that are dedicated just to parapsychology, so it is gaining
more traction and is gaining more publicity. Maybe in the future we'll
see a little bit more of a turnaround for this field but as it stands now
there are some really cool implications for the research that has been done.
When we get positive results from a parapsychology test we suddenly realize
that the lines between what we know and what actually exists may not be what we
thought and that is so exciting. I love that. I love that it opens up our minds a
little bit and opens us up to the possibility that more exists beyond what
we can see. That brings me to the human capabilities -- when we find positive test
results in this field, we learned that the human capabilities may have been
underestimated. We may be capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit
for or we actually are led to believe. Another thing that was found in my
research about the implications of parapsychology is the mind-body
connection. We also under estimate that. We underestimate our influence on our
surroundings and the power our minds can have on everything around us this proves
that there's more of a link between the mind and body -- this proves that there's
more of a connection between ourselves and other people and nature. Of
course the spiritual implications of these studies is pretty miraculous.
Depending on what you believe you can take it any way you want but it's really
incredible to see science catch up with some of the things we've attributed to
miracles in the past or we maybe not have had an explanation for. So what do
you think about parapsychology? I was so stoked to study this and I can't wait to
learn more. If I do I promise I will share with you all.
