Teaching Tip Create a Video Slideshow Part 2 Record Your Video - Duration: 6:26.

>> Hello! I'm Liz du Plessis, the instructional designer in distance education at SRJC.

Welcome to Part 2 of our video series How to Create a Video Slideshow.

In this video, I'll show you the free Screencast-O-Matic recording tools as well

as features that come with the pro version,

and I'll show you two approaches for recording a slide show.

With the first approach, you record voiceovers and your slides simultaneously

with the free version of Screencast-O-Matic.

With the second approach, you use the pro version to record audio and slides

in segments for a more polished result.

Let's get started!

Basic recording tools are free on the Screencast-O-Matic.com website.

First, click the Start Recording button.

If it's your first time, you may be prompted to download the screen recorder launcher.

When the recorder launches, you'll see a black and white frame

with a menu for the recorder controls.

You can choose to record just your screen, webcam, or both using these buttons.

Using the webcam even just a little increases your teaching presence

and humanizes the video for students.

Select your microphone using this button.

Media services at SRJC has high-quality USB microphones

that you can plug into your computer.

Click on your selected microphone to use Auto Adjust

to set the volume level before each recording session.

Click the Record button and all the action inside the frame will be captured along

with your voice.

You can pause and resume the recorder, preview your recording,

and delete and restart if needed.

Click the Done button when you're finished, and save the recording

to a video file on your computer.

You can use basic Screencast-O-Matic tools to record a slideshow

with speaker notes and PowerPoint.

Open your PowerPoint file and click the Slideshow tab.

Select Use Presenter View and play the slideshow.

Drag and resize the Screencast-O-Matic frame

to record only the slides and not your speaker notes.

Click Record and read your speaker notes as you advance through your slides.

When you're done, click Pause and Done.

Select Save As Video File so that you can upload your video to 3C Media for captioning.

With the free version of Screencast-O-Matic, you can record and save

as many 15-minute videos that you like.

Now I'll show you one of the pro features that you get

for $15 a year called Scripted Recordings.

The Scripted Recordings tool is especially useful if you don't have a script

and speaker notes or if you're recording something other than PowerPoint slides.

With Scripted Recordings, you input a script and record your audio and video in segments.

This makes it really easy to re-record segments of audio or video.

To get to Scripted Recordings from the Screencast-O-Matic website,

log into your pro account, browse Recordings, and click on the Scripted button.

If you've installed Screencast-O-Matic on your computer using the download install feature,

you won't need to log in, and the Recordings window is the first thing you see

when you launch the application from your computer.

Give your script a name by clicking at the top and entering a name.

For this example, we'll create a short lecture video using our PowerPoint slides.

The script contains multiple sections.

You will input your script and then record audio for one section at a time.

To add more sections, hit the enter key or click the add section button.

You can rearrange sections by clicking the Section Number Box at the left and typing

in a new number for that section.

Once you're ready to record the audio, select a section by clicking on it.

Make sure the correct microphone is selected, and when you're ready, click the Record button.

The section will turn red and then become green when you should start talking.

While recording audio, you can click Pause, Next to go to the next section,

or Redo if you need to re-do the audio.

And you can play back the audio using the controls at the bottom.

You may have to unplug your microphone to hear playback

or change the audio preferences on your computer.

Any time you modify the script text or audio, the changes are auto-saved.

You can un-do your last action, and if you change your mind, re-do it.

You can also see your edit history to restore a previous version.

After your audio is ready, it's time to add video to each section.

Select a section and click the Record Video button to open the recorder.

You'll a box that displays the script text.

This box won't show in the actual recorded video.

When you're ready, click the Record button.

You will hear the audio you recorded so that you can follow along while you record the video.

After the audio runs out, the recorder will continue to record, adding silence to the audio

in that section until you click the Pause button or move on to the next section.

Click the Next button to move to the next section and continue recording.

Once you're done recording, click the Done button.

Clicking Done takes us back out to the script editor, which now shows icons that both audio

and video are recorded for a section.

Click the drop-down for more options, including ways to edit silence at the end of a section.

After the audio and video are ready to go, you can move on to editing the video,

which we cover in the next video in our series.
