One of my fav TV series of all time is Weeds. I loved Nancy and her misadventures.
I loved the blue Prius she drove and wanted one as well.
But wait, this isn't Prius, it's a Hyundai Ioniq!
Ioniq is Hyundai's first attempt at mass produced hybrid and electric cars.
I drove a hybrid, but there's also electric version available.
The hybrid in this case means the electric motor and the petrol motor run together in order to produce optimal output.
In some cases, the car can run on electric only, on short distances
In other cases, petrol engine is not only running the car but also charges the electric batteries to use it later, while accelerating.
Let's take a look inside
443 litres, no hooks that I like so much, but there's an elastic net, very practical if you want to put a small shopping bag or a bottle of wine in the boot
The opening is high.... Ah, there you go.
And a slide preventing the world from peeking inside
The car has a lot of room in the back - especially of the driver is not 2 metres tall
Nothing special, huh? Except for this: heated back seats!
There's also an arm rest, a place to put one's mug etc.
So, let's see how it feels behind the wheel of Ioniq
This version comes with electric seats with memory function
What else does it have? Quite a lot of space inside
Here, for example
My phone fits here - moreover, it can be charged wirelessly!
My sunnies fit here
There's my coffee mug
And here's sth I don't usually find in cars. This is instruction manual, but a tablet will easily fit in here - excellent for traveling salespeople.
I drove most of the Priuses, including the newest one.
And sadly, my love of the eco-ugly duckling subsided a bit.
Because a Prius is slooooow.
Or rather - that's the feeling you get because of the CVT gearbox, the one that makes noises like a lawnmower
So any acceleration feels like an inconvenience.
Ioniq is equipped with a dual-clutch gearbox, so it feels more dynamic.
Although it's slower than a Prius
I drove Ioniq in the city and to the suburbs, and yes, dynamic driving is possible.
As for visibility, it's OK, A pillar is not blocking my view entirely
Which is not sth I can say about many cars
As for backwards visibility, there's no problem thanks to the camera. If there was none, this strange, dual glass would be a concern, probably.
But with a camera, there's no problem at all.
Hybrid cars are supposed to be cost-effective and eco-friendly.
Opponents remind about the problem with storing used batteries.
But first hybrid cars are still fully functional, and on original batteries
Also, every car manufacturer has a way of re-using old car batteries
For example for storing energy from solar panels installed on roofs
Oh, and by the way, LiPo batteries are used not only in cars (they're used by Hyundai and KIA), but also in smartphones, electric drills and e-cigarettes.
And I don't see anybody complaining about it.
Price-wise, Hyundai Ioniq is similar to Skoda Octavia with 1.0 TSI engine I reviewed recently.
Fuel costs will also be similar, because fuel consumption in 1.0 litre 3-cylinder Skoda engine and in hybrid Ioniq engine are almost the same.
So, there's no obvious upside to buying Hyundai Ioniq
But Hyundai looks futuristic, and Skoda... like a Skoda
