Hi everyone, my name is Kim I am a registered

dietitian; Welcome to my channel. So today

we'll be talking about when is it time,

how do you know it is time, for you to

see a dietitian? So this can definitely

be a very tricky question. So there are

two reasons why I am making this video.

The first reason is, is because a lot of

you have been emailing me and asking me

questions about your personal health and

it is very, very hard to answer those

questions so that's why I always defer

you to go to your primary care provider

and see a dietitian. Someone is able to

look at your labs, look at your history

and physical and fully assess you and

give you counseling and advise from that

point. The second reason why I'm making

this video is because seeing I am a

clinical dietitian, I do work in an

inpatient setting and I also do see

outpatients. So I just wanted to share

with you from my personal experience the

times when individuals do come to me. The

information that I am share with you

today is my personal opinion; other

dietitians out there may not agree with

me other primary care providers may not

agree with me so everything in this

video is reflective on my own personal

belief. So the first reason why I think

individuals should see dietitians is

related to weight management. So it can

be anything from weight gain to weight

loss. So individuals which MAY need to

see a dietitian for weight gain are

individuals which do suffer from an

eating disorder. Now with seeing a

dietitian for weight gain for

individuals which do have eating

disorders there are specific types of

dietitians. Not all dietitians are

well-versed in handling

individuals that you have eating

disorders because of course you know

there is a whole entire psychological

component that goes along with it. So an

experienced dietitian is the way to go.

As well for individuals which want to

lose weight there's some dietitians

which do have certifications in weight

management and this weight loss could be

something as non-invasive as dieting and

exercising to something a little more

invasive such as gastric bypass surgery.

Dietitians can help individuals lose or

gain weight or even if you're an

individual out there and you've been

doing everything right you're exercising,

your dieting and you're still not losing

weight or you're still not gaining weight a

dietitian can help in that aspect as

well. The second reason an individual

wants to see a dietitian is if you have

a new diagnosis and the diagnoses that

I'm focusing on is diabetes,

hyperlipidemia or hypertension. Those

three seem to be the big boys. Something

I didn't want to say it is very tempting

if you're diagnosed with a new disease

to go on the internet, to go on the world

wide web and research some things on

your own and then put it into play in

your personal life. The world wide web

does have some credible websites and they

do have some websites that are not

really scientifically, evidenced-based. So

the world wide web is not your personal

dietitian so that is another reason to

sit down and see a dietitian if you are

diagnosed with a new disease state. Another reason an

individual one to see a dietitian is for

GI gastrointestinal issues.

And this can range from anything related to

constipation to celiac disease and

everything right in between

there. A lot of individuals do have

some stomach upset and I'll tell you the

truth, stomach upset is not something

pretty! It can definitely alter your

social life. Seeing a dietitian to find

out what foods can help you manage your

bowel disease a little bit better is

worthwhile. So the fourth reason why you

need to see a dietitian or someone would

want to see a dietitian is if you have

any food intolerances or food allergies.

Knowing what foods you can and can't eat

if you have any type of food

sensitivities is a reason why you

want to see a dietician. A dietitian

will be able to equip you with the

necessary skills that you do need in

order to decipher "is this something that

is safe to eat if I do go to this party

or is this something safe to eat if I do

go out to this restaurant?", so knowing

what your options are a dietitian can

definitely fill you in on all of that.

The fifth reason and I think this is the

most unknown reason why someone would

want to see a dietitian is just really

to check up on your general health. A lot

of people don't realize that they can

visit a dietitian just to make sure that

they're eating properly. So for

individuals just like you or I who want

to know you know "Am I getting the

adequate intake of the different

vitamins as well as different minerals?"

that's one you would want to see a

dietitian. A dietitian is able to break

down the nutrients in your food and

assess it, compare to the recommended

daily allowances to see if you're

getting the proper amount of food. I wanted to say

that this list that I gave you is not

exhaustive because individuals that are

pregnant or trying to get pregnant,

individuals that may be training for the

Olympics or training for some type of

sport may need dietitian intervention

as well. Individuals that have cancer can

see dietitians as well. People that have

tube feedings may need to see dietitians

as well. So there's a multitude of

different reasons why individuals can

see a dietitian. So let me say when seeing

a dietitian one-on-one it can get a

little pricey I'm not even gonna lie.

Some insurance companies depending on

what type of insurance you have can

cover you for treatment. As well there's

some dietitians who are in private

practice that do take cash payment so

when you guys are looking to see

what dietitian I do want to see first

call your insurance companies and see

will they pay for you to see a

dietitian. I wanted to tell you

dietitians they're very underutilized

but, they are an integral part of your

overall health. Some dietitians are more

experienced than others in certain

realms like for instance, I would say I

have no idea where I would start in the

realm of being a sports dietitian or a

community dietitian that is something

that I do not practice on a daily basis

but, when it deals with the clinical...(I GOT YOU). So

guys this was just another video to

encourage you to see a dietitian I'm
