Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Graduate Video - Duration: 3:15.

(upbeat music)

MAN: I started with a Bachelor of Political, Economic

and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

Then a couple years ago I moved to ANU to do

a Masters of International Affairs.

MAN: I studied a Bachelor of Business,

majoring in Accounting and Management at Monash University.

WOMAN: Prior to joining the Department,

I was working as a sessional tutor at the Cairns

Campus of James Cook University.

WOMAN: I worked for the State Government in Queensland

and also for a community legal centre.

WOMAN: I wanted to work in the Department

because I wanted to be able to combine my skills in law

and journalism in a way that would actually

make a meaningful contribution.

MAN: I wanted to work for the Department

because I saw that the knowledge that I'd gained

from my science background would help in developing,

say, policy and program delivery in the Department.

The big drawcard for me for the graduate program

was the ability to rotate through different placements.

Having placements that go for about five to six months each

gives you a really deep understanding of what each

section does and how that section

meets the Department's objectives.

The most interesting project is

obviously the graduate major project.

We just work as a group of grads and get given

a project that's relevant to Departmental policies.

So, it's a great chance to do a bit of stakeholder

engagement, both internally and externally.

I also like the fact that we get to do

Graduate Certificate of either Management or Economics

at the University of Canberra in our second year.

I think that's a great opportunity.

It was about less than two months on the job here

at the Department that I got the opportunity

to go down to Melbourne and sit in the room

while they negotiated a free trade agreement.

They were updating the implementation and I got

to sit in the room with representatives

from all of the ASEAN countries, New Zealand, and Australia,

see how the process works, which was quite interesting

having studied it for the better part of five years.

I've had a very rare opportunity of undertaking

a secondment at the Minister's office

and it really gave me a great perspective to see

how the work the Department does helps

the Minister and his staffers.

Moving assistance that the graduate team provides,

that allowed us to set ourselves up and gives you

enough time to find somewhere to live which was fantastic.

Each new graduate is assigned a graduate buddy,

so a person from the cohort of the previous year

gets in contact with you before you move

to Canberra just to check in with you.

They might offer some insights about working

in the Department but also about living

in Canberra more broadly.

So, we also have the grad chats

where someone from the Department does a talk

about what they're doing and that's very insightful

because then we have a better idea

of what we might want to do next.

Moving to a new city can be quite challenging in itself

because, especially for someone like me,

I didn't know anyone down here,

so to have that immediate graduate support network

is so vital because you come in with 47 friends.

I've really enjoyed the grad program.

I think it's highly beneficial, both to me personally

in my own personal growth and development,

but also in terms of my future work

in the Public Service as well.

In the eight or nine months that I've been here,

I've had the chance to do so much more

than I could ever have imagined.

Industry is a very interesting department.

Science and innovation is currently at the forefront

of the Government's agenda and you definitely

feel that coming across in your work.

So, definitely give it a shot.
