Robot Hand Video - Duration: 3:02.

Today's society faces all sorts of

challenges and many of them can be

improved with clever engineering, from

problems relating to unsafe emissions to

the corrosion of structures necessary

for everyday life. One challenge that

doesn't get so much publicity but is

still important is how to help children

with autism succeed. It's

counterintuitive that engineering could

help with something like this but

studies have shown that human-like

robots can help trigger social responses

out of young children with autism better than human therapists.

Our project hopes to build on this area of research.

We wanted to build a three fingered hand

that would be part of a robot torso and

a robot arm so they could eventually

interact with children with autism. There

is a chance that the hand could be used on a

UAV as well, so we wanted to also make

sure that the hand could take on functional

tasks too. To challenge ourselves we set

three main goals for the hand: 1) that

it could handle a five kilogram object,

2) that it could satisfy a weight

requirement of three-quarters of a pound

or less, and 3) that it would appear human like

We designed the hand so that, like a

human hand, there would be three joints

for the pointer and middle fingers and

two joints for the thumb. We use the term

middle finger because the hand appears

like a human hand but without the ring

and pinky fingers. On the current

prototype the fingers, thumb, and motors

are attached to a main center piece of

Delrin plastic around which a casing

acts as a guard for the motors, as a

surface for the hand to grasp objects

against, and to add a more human-like

appearance. Finally, there is a female

dovetail attachment so that the hand can

connect to a robot arm. All of the parts

except for the centerpiece and a few key

parts of the finger and thumb were 3d

printed with ABS plastic.

The motion of the hand was important to us too,

we designed the hand so that the pointer

finger and thumb pinched together, while

the middle finger is free to curl on its

own. We decided to go with this design as

opposed to say the pointer and middle

fingers pinching against a thumb since

we thought it could offer more

variability in grasp types. The fingers

and the thumb rotate by linkage

mechanisms with each finger and thumb

having their own servo motor to provide

the necessary torque to collectively

manipulate a 5 kilogram object.

The thought of this hand being used to help

children with autism or being used on a

UAV is very exciting; we accomplished our

main goals and are glad to have made a

working prototype. We thank Dr. Ramirez-Serrano

and the University of Calgary

for the opportunity to work on this

exciting project through the capstone program
