That quote that you just heard is everything when it comes to a music video.
Music videos are critical to a band or artist commercially and represent what that song
is about.
If an artist puts out a music video to advertise their song, chances are it will do better
than songs that don't have a music video and give them more sales and views and so
on, even if that music video is bad.
Your favorite song probably has a music video, and if it doesn't, then it should because
it would be way more popular.
Now of course this is disregarding a specific genre, such as saying "Rock has the best
music videos", because in all honesty, a music video can be great regardless of the
genre of the song.
In this video you may think I'm going to talk about aspects of what make a music video
great, which I'll talk about briefly, but also why it's essential in any genre of
music and to that artist.
When I say a famous song, you may think of the lyrics to that song, but there are some
who may think of the music video or a live performance of that song.
In this video, you are going to hear from me what I believe makes a great music video
such as the 5 essential elements that the audience looks for, some examples of these
elements being used in excellent music videos, and my opinions.
I'm also going to show you what not to do in your music video and bad examples of what
a music video should be.

Ok so in a music video, the artist should have shown effort, energy, intensity, stage
performance, and meaning with personal context.
So essentially a physical side and a mental side.
All of these should be at the best level possible, there is a lot of money that of course goes
into a music video but if the artist nails down each of these five aspects, then they're
solid.
In my opinion, the best music video of all time is Dirty Little Secret by The All-American
Rejects, which was recorded in 2004 and released everywhere including the music video in 2005,
and I believe it's the best without question.
Now why do I think this way?
Well the video of course accurately reflects the song itself, which is that everyone has
secrets.
There may be music videos on relationships, but not everyone is in a relationship or has
been in one, but everyone has secrets that they keep from everyone else.
So the personal context which is defined as an individual's internal environment derived
from his or her gender, values, beliefs, cultural background, or state of mind is fulfilled.
Making a song that emotionally connects with the audience is critical and Dirty Little
Secret talks about a relationship with another and also the secrets that both of them hold,
so right there you have two themes, one on relationships and one on secrets.
Meaning and personal context in this video and song are fantastic, and these aspects
should be subtle as they are the mental side and the audience has to interpret what the
song means through the video if we assume they are watching just the video, the other
aspects such as energy and intensity being physical and what the audience sees immediately.
I have to say, Tyson gives it his all in this video and you can feel the energy and intensity
he gives off, and when writing a song about your personal experiences, you should always
display the emotion of how you felt at the time and give it your all.
He's also moving around a bit while singing which shows just how much effort and exertion
he's giving.
So in terms of energy, intensity, and effort, a big yes.
As for stage presence, I absolutely have to say it, but massive shoutout to the film director
Marcos Siega who has also worked on many other pop punk music videos and with other bands.
Siega is an expert music video director and knows where to place the camera and at what
moments would be best to place the camera on the singer and the other members of the
band and so on.
Notice throughout the whole video how the camera is almost always on the frontman, as
it should be.
It cuts towards anonymous people holding up postcards of their secrets and the video was
actually based on a website called PostSecret which basically is this site where people
post their secrets regardless if it's good or bad and remain anonymous all the while.
The frontman or lead singer or artist is usually the person singing the song, and if the camera
is not on them, then there is an emotional disconnect with the audience.
When you're singing a song, whose part do you usually sing?
If you answered the lead singer's part, which I imagine most people would, then the
camera must be on them for that emotional impact to take place.
It just adds that emphasis and emotions of what that singer is feeling when you have
the camera on them.
The song itself reached #9 on the Billboard 100 in 2006, insane for a pop punk band, and
well deserved too.
Now moving on, Welcome To The Black Parade needs no introduction, it's regarded as
the greatest music video of all time and of the century, the song itself also reached
#9 on the Billboard 100 along with Dirty Little Secret and is regarded as one of the greatest
rock songs of all time that shaped Rock and Roll.
The theme is death, and all I have to say is watch all 5 minutes of this masterpiece,
you will feel so many emotions at once and by the end it'll be like you just watched
an amazing movie and the ending left you satisfied.
Every member in this video gives more than 100% and all 5 aspects are excellent.
The video starts with a patient which the audience follows throughout the entire video,
while a parade continuously marches forward.
This black parade symbolizes death and the fact that it keeps moving on shows that even
after death your memory carries on and the world moves on and it also symbolizes movement
from death to the afterlife.
Everyone experiences death whether directly or indirectly, whether you've seen someone
die or you will eventually die yourself.
I know, deep, but the song itself is very deep because it effectively touches on a scary
and sad subject, death.
Moving on to Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye, this is a song that focuses around
relationships and heartbreak.
The camera is almost always on Gotye's face throughout the entire video, and he starts
off soft and then builds towards the climax which is with Kimbra, the second singer in
the video.
Note that Gotye himself went through a breakup to make this song and also with his launchpad,
this video is interesting because it introduces another singer into the mix with a different
perspective, so Gotye at first is blaming it all on the woman and then Kimbra places
the blame on the man what with their bitter and sour tones throughout the song, and also
their depressed looks.
The mosaic behind them symbolizes a relationship, and when Gotye gets painted he enters the
relationship, and then when Kimbra becomes unpainted, she leaves the relationship and
Gotye.
The song has all 5 aspects nailed down, but what's even better is the creative concept
that Gotye introduces which is the subtle meaning and personal context with the mosaic
and being painted.
Romance and relationship songs tend to attract more people because people naturally like
drama, it spicens things more.
Many people have been in a relationship or maybe are in one right now, so these type
of videos and songs would appeal to them.
Overall, Somebody That I Used To Know is amazing as a music video for these reasons.
Now you guys know I couldn't not talk about Bohemian Rhapsody, and why in its time is
so good.
The song is mysterious in general as only Freddie knew what it was about, we can see
him playing the piano, all 4 members playing their instruments in their iconic formation,
but how they nail down each of the 5 sections in the song, acapella, ballad, opera, rock,
and coda.
The transition from soft to loud is clear and vice versa.
The song is a masterpiece and the music video goes with those sections.
It's an exception because most songs have just one section, rock, pop, rap, so imagine
how difficult it is to do 5 for a music video.
All aspects are met except meaning and personal context, because there really is no meaning
or message, it was a song Freddie wrote really by himself, but whenever you say "Oh man,
Bohemian Rhapsody really hit me in the feels", what exactly do you mean by that because this
is a song without any real meaning but it is still effective with the way it is portrayed.
I saw the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, one of the best movies of the decade for sure and
I definitely want a sequel.
But yeah, watch all 6 minutes, the amount of emotions you will feel is crazy.
Also, the editing is spectacular for a music video made in 1975, and additionally in my
opinion this music video makes this classic song truly timeless.
Now of course I can't end this video without talking about the rap genre, now personally
I don't think there are any good rap music videos, as most rappers just use too many
hand movements which I find to be off-putting and even at times rude and obnoxious.
(In editing software just say to not overdo the gesticulations).
But there are two rap music videos which stand out from the rest and both of these songs
were nominated for best music video, one actually won best music video with a message, and the
other didn't receive any awards just the nomination.
The first is Joyner Lucas' I'm Not Racist, where both sides give their argument on the
other's race's flaws, such as when the white man blames blacks for their treatment
by the police, and the black man saying all lives matter and how the country is run by
whites.
They end up hugging it out after hearing the others story and the powerful message is conveyed
which is to listen to others and their perspectives and stories before you judge them, listen
to their point of view so that a bond can exist despite differences between those individuals.
All aspects are met even without Joyner in the video because the two men in the video
kind of fill that missing spot.
The second is This Is America, which you absolutely have to see, even if you're not a rap fan
because I certainly am not in an era where it's mainstream.
But I do indeed love watching Donald Glover as an actor and as an artist because his music
videos have powerful messages behind them.
This Is America has so many messages and meanings and even hidden meanings, but for the most
part it talks about gun violence, racism, the media, and overall violence in America,
and by the end of the video you're really wondering if America is really safe for its
citizens.
It also talks about the media with people in the background running around while Gambino
and his crew dances in front of the camera which is supposed to distract you.
This won best music video with a message, which is an understatement because there are
so many in this one video.
All 5 aspects are met because of personal context being living in America and the messages
in the video, clearly Gambino has a stage presence and effort and so on and his music
videos are very fun to watch.
Now there's a good question I know I'm going to get asked, which is well what if
a music video is animated, is it still good?
The answer for me is kind of, if you visually make the animation entertaining to watch.
All 5 aspects are pretty much lost but instead you really only have 2 aspects, is it visually
appealing, and is it entertaining which is at this point completely subjective, but like
I said, animated music videos tend to not do as well as normal ones cause the audience
could get bored and loses that energy and intensity that the singer gives off.
None of the band is in the video, at least not physically.
I know I'm really giving them a lot of praise and promoting them, but The Galacticas'
song Diagnostics is honestly one of the best animated music videos I've seen in a long
time and it may even be the best, because the robots fighting each other and the action
overall makes for a very entertaining video to watch.
It makes me feel great because I like action and rock and pop punk music, so it makes you
feel like you have to focus on the animation while listening to the music and think of
it like a gameplay commentary, you watch the gameplay or in this case the animation and
listen to the commentary, it naturally hooks you, same goes with great animated music videos.
Ok now I know you guys may think I just chose my favorite music videos and talked about
how good they are, but I simply chose out my favorite and explained in detail why they
are so good, what makes them so memorable in our minds, and how this could apply to
other music videos.
Thank you guys for watching, and if you enjoyed this video please drop a like, share this
with others, comment your thoughts, and subscribe with those notifications turned on so that
you never miss an upload.
Thanks and as always, have a good one.
