Since its first year as a small data mashup event in 2009, GovHack has grown into an international
competition, which brings over 2,000 people together across Australia and New Zealand
to come up with creative and innovative solutions by combining the skills and knowledge of talented
change makers with the power of open government data.
In Australia, we welcome back many familiar faces as well as many new GovHackers to experience
the very special environment that happens when people get together to bounce ideas and
create clever new things for a better world.
You are part of Australia's biggest hackathon, which for the first time in 2017 has events
in every Australian state and territory, including every capital city as well as regional and
remote centres across the country.
Welcome to Darwn, Alice Springs, Casey, Brimbank, LaTrobe Valley, Broken Hill, Albany, and Karratha
all joining GovHack for the first time in 2017, and not forgetting our pals in New Zealand
who are stepping up with eight events of their own across the north and south islands.
The only limits to what you can create is your imagination.
Some fantastic entries from previous years have included a tool to make government expenditure
easy to understand at the click of a button as well as an app that uses photo recognition
technology to help people match photos of their loved ones with photos archived from
World War I, an app that makes searching for missing persons easier by creating heat maps
of already searched areas.
There's also been projects that make travelling easier for pedestrians with limited mobility,
and even an app for keeping Pokemon Goers safer on the roads.
We're looking forward to seeing the great ideas that come out of this year's GovHack
weekend at the end of July and we can't wait to see you there.
You'll find everything you need to compete in the competitor handbook and the Hackerspace.
You can find these at govhack.org/handbook and 2017.hackerspace.govhack.org.
After watching this video, the next thing to do is form or join a team.
Your local host can help with this.
Then, head to the Hackerspace to create your Team Project page and get access to information
about the award categories that you are eligible to compete in.
You might also want to head to the Hackerspace pages from previous years to see a list of
amazing projects that your predecessors have come up with.
As well as competing on state and national levels, we also have international level award
categories that are available to both Australian and New Zealand competitors.
We've also been shaking things up with some great new major categories to challenge our
Australian competitors.
This year, we'll be using Slack to form teams, communicate with mentors and coaches, communicate
competition details, and especially to support our remote competitors.
To join Slack, go to slack.govhack.org.
If you've joined Slack last year during GovHack, you can find it again at GovHackHQ.slack.com.
More information can be found in the handbook.
A very special thanks to GovHack volunteers behind the scenes who make GovHack the event
it is today.
Thank you to all our national, state, and event sponsors who make GovHack possible through
the provision of data mentors, awards, and event funding.
The competition has now commenced and you have until Sunday at 5PM to submit your entry.
Good luck and play fair.
