Welcome back to Psych-Minded my name is Kalley Marie and if you're currently in
college and thinking about taking a statistics course or heading in that
direction then this video is for you. Stay tuned I'm gonna give you my top
tips on how you can succeed in statistics.
Thank you so much for joining
me today. On this channel I get a lot of psychology students and a lot of
college students coming to me and wondering how to succeed in class and
how to get through some of their courses. One of the biggest questions I get is
about statistics and how can we pass these courses, right? Because they tend to
be a little more advanced and a little more conceptual than just basic math
that we've learned up until this point. If you are currently a college
student or you're thinking about going into statistics class -- especially if you
are interested in psychology, then this video is for you. Because we do know that
for psychology students, even though we deal so much with theoretical concepts,
we do look a lot at research and statistics. So understanding what's going
on with our research studies in psychology is really important. So let's
dive right into it. So right off the bat the good news is that statistics is
relevant! :) Like I mentioned, we're looking at research studies in sociology,
psychology. It's applicable to a lot of different things that are relevant and a
lot of different studies and things that definitely influence treatment plans and
other things in the mental health and other fields. So you're probably not
gonna find yourself saying "this is ridiculous." You're not really gonna have
to worry about that because a lot of the problems and equations that you're gonna
be working out in statistics are either from actual studies or they're made-up
studies to try to basically understand the concepts. To me that was really
fun. That can be really exciting because you know that you're learning
something that you're going to be able to carry with you You're gonna take the
definitions and the concepts to other areas in your study. So hopefully you
will not find yourself as frustrated as other math classes or feeling like
you're never gonna use this, Because you totally will. So the next bit of advice
is to show up every single day. For something like statistics, you really
can't skip class or skip a lecture. You really have to make sure you're on top
of it and this is the case for most of us with math classes. But with statistics
especially you want to show up and you want to show up early. You want to make
sure that right at the beginning of the week, you know what's expected. You
know the timeline of your assignments and homework. Really work to get on a
schedule that is going to make it so that you have plenty of time to get your
work done. Next you really want to focus on -- and
this sort of goes along with showing up, is you want to make sure that statistics
is a priority. This should be the first class on your mind if you're -- if you're
nervous or you're worried about passing. It should be your number one priority
for the week. The good news is, is that if you are in a good schedule you
can get all of that hard work done right at the beginning of the week and sort of
know if you're gonna need some extra help as the week goes on. That's another
thing is, you're going to want to speak up early. So if you get into a lecture or
you're starting to get into notes or a chapter and you have no idea what's
going on -- don't wait around to try to just understand it. Be sure to ask
questions right away, talk to your classmates. By planning ahead organizing
and diving into it early and as soon as possible, you'll have plenty of time to
make sure that the work gets done. Along with that you're going to want to
use all of your resources. So don't just limit yourself to your professor or one
or two classmates. You're going to use a lot of different resources in college
math. So look at online support groups, look at online videos, look at whatever
you're going to need that's gonna help. You may need one-on-one tutoring. You may
need somebody who is right in front of you and able to sit down and do the
equations with you. So be sure to speak up and use a lot of different resources.
Keep trying until one clicks. One really good resource is Khan Academy.
it's spelled K-H-A-N. If you go to Khan Academy, they have some amazing
videos that are outlined for pretty much every level of college math. So if
you go to the statistics section, very sequentially, they have the concepts
and examples. I loved watching those videos along with like my supplemental
lectures from my statistics courses because
it helped to have someone else explain it and have a different perspective on
it, to sort of watch and go along with what I was already learning. So even if
you are understanding the concepts, looking at a secondary resource can be
really helpful. So make sure you're really organized, as well look at things
at the beginning of the week, look at the syllabus to make sure that you are
writing down emails and important dates and anything that is going to be
pertinent to your success in this class. Organization for this kind of thing is
critical. So really make sure that you have a planner or some system in
your phone or an app that is going to be able to remind you and help you stay on
a schedule with keeping up with your lectures and class times and all of that
good stuff. One thing I found particularly helpful in terms of
organization with math is color coding my notes. So if there are specific
formulas or specific definitions, I usually have like four or five different
pens next to me that are different colors and are bright colors or
highlighters so that I can highlight really important concepts. Or I can go
back and see exactly where the definitions are. One other thing I
do is for any definition I always put it in a box. So if the definition was
correlation for example I would put correlation in a box and then a hyphen
and then the definition. So going down my notes I can see anything in a box is
gonna be a major, important concept in that chapter. It's gonna have the
definition there for me with probably some examples of how to do it. So really
make sure if by now you're in college and you don't have an organization
system -- statistics would be the time to make sure that you are very organized
and you're looking at the class from the span of a week and able to go day by day
in little chunks to achieve what needs to be done. I know you can do it!
Statistics does not have to be scary. It is super fun and I encourage you to keep
going especially if it's for psychology! If you have any questions for me
