Warning viewers, this might be a little bit boring but hey at least we tried.

Hi my name is Ashley this is Presley as you should know and we just had an

earthquake! (not really) Okay, we wish we could of recorded it for you but we had some

technical difficulties with it being an earthquake and all. Luckily, before the

earthquake happened, I was working on a small model of a seismograph so it

recorded all the seismic waves that the earthquake had to offer. But Presley, I don't know what a seismic wave is.

Ashley, we're scientists, you should know this!

Anyway this might jog your memory. There are three different types of seismic waves.

Wait wait wait, hold up, okay I remember this. We have those S waves, the surface

waves, yeah, and those P waves I, I just don't remember the order they go in or

what they mean I just know their names. Well knowing the names is a start but P

waves are the waves that arrive first and they are the fastest waves. S waves are

little bit bigger and they come right after the P waves. Surface waves are what

causes the biggest lines on the seismograph or the seismogram (my bad!) (or for

some people, the paper) anyway back to the model I was talking about. Right! That contraption

that you were working on last time. Okay so I couldn't figure

out what it was last time right I just saw you put it together like with this

pen in it and we've got this box with papers stuffed inside i'm like, dude, I

didn't want to interrupt you because you were in your work space but

I couldn't figure out what it was Well, I mean, thanks for not interrupting

me but so this right here is called a seismograph it's honestly just a

worst version of a real seismograph because we don't have that kind of

technology if we had all the materials and the technology to to make a real

seismograph one of the things we need is a drum that could vibrate during the

earthquake and cause the pen to record the seismic waves. Other items are needed

but... they aren't that important we don't need them were better

than them. That's not what I was gonna say but I

guess that works. Okay here we go

okay so if you can't see, right here we have the P waves yes I almost forgot

oh gosh I'm so sorry. Bad memory? Yeah, we have those S waves. And then we have my buddy surface waves.

those are the really big waves. Yep, Yep, okay so I do have a serious question for you,

though I don't know if you're gonna be serious with me but are we the only ones who

experience earthquakes? Well if you're really being serious I'll answer it

seriously. No, because there's a whole other section of the earth that you're

leaving out there's these things called plate tectonics. Earthquakes are

caused because of them. Right, those plate tectonics, the ones in Earth's

lithospere that are in pieces that are being in a constant motion by the convection

current in the mantle? Look, people, I have a bad memory, you should know this but

I'm really trying. Yeah, yeah. The Pacific Ocean is surrounded by them

this area is called the Ring of Fire! Not the song by Johnny Cash everyone. It's

okay if you didn't know, well it's really not. Anyways, I took the liberty to print this

right, one of these maps okay. It's the map of a seismograph that

scientists have recorded from the past to know earthquakes have occurred on

Earth. I'm sure it was a challenge for you to print

that... Rude. Also, even with the data that every single that even every single

scientist in the world has collected, they still cannot figure out when and

where an earthquake could appear. But right here this is the Ring of Fire it's

backwards (It was backwards on the camera) but it's the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is between North America

and Asia. Okay, let's not forget my buddies

can't pronounce it, I think that's right the only reason I chose them it's

there's many other plates in the Ring of Fire but... Anyway earthquakes

don't just happen in the Ring of Fire though, earthquakes like they happen all

around the world they're really dangerous! One of the most powerful

earthquakes happen was in like it was in Japan on March 11, 2011 and the really

bad thing about it was it started a tsunami and then it destroyed a bunch of

stuff you know with just the water coming in but that nuclear power plant I

think it was (yes) and all that stuff and it just literally destroyed everything

and now it's still like really bad area over there with a whole bunch of toxic

stuff and so many people died during it! Fun fact. Oh, it was a very fun
