Don't Ruin Your Videos! | #EasyWins - Duration: 4:01.

(light, jazzy music) - To get a win,

sometimes you have to learn

from the mistakes that have been made.

So in this easy win, we're going to look at five things

that will ruin your video in the hopes

that you don't make the same mistakes.

Number one, lighting.

If your light's not right,

then your beautifully shot video

can quickly turn into a catastrophe.

Examples of poor lighting can be

too much light coming from either

behind or in front of your subject.

Or if there's not enough light,

your shot will end up looking

unintentionally gloomy.

And standing right under an overhead light

will add unwanted shadows on your subject.

To avoid these issues, you can make sure to have

a light source at an appropriate distance

in front of your subject so you can have the option

of moving it forward or backwards

depending on how much light you need.

You can also add lights to the background

of your shot to give your shot some more depth.

And of course, avoid those spotlights.

The video's not all about you, okay?

Or maybe it is, you know, what do I know?

Number two, audio.

Your audio quality will be a huge factor

in whether your video is a success

or less of a success.

Examples of poor audio can be

strange noises in the background.

- We're just going to be discussing a little bit

(man sneezes) of the things you may need to

- Forgetting to plug in your mic.

Using your camera's built in mic.

- Where our editing team takes your fridge

- Brushing the mic

(crackling noises)

And peaking.

- Shootsta we're all about helping companies produ--

- To ensure these problems don't give you

any grief in the future,

you can always make sure to check your audio

before you start filming, use an external mic,

find a quiet place to shoot, and put on a pair

of headphones so you can monitor the volume.

Number three, focusing.

This is incredibly important to your video

because if your subject's not in focus,

it will be distracting and probably ruin someone's day.

The best way to avoid this is simply

double-checking your own focus.

Whether you're in manual or auto,

take the time to double check and make sure

that your shot is crisp and clear.

The second thing to look out for

is movement from your talent.

If your talent rocks backwards and forwards,

then they will actually be moving in and out of focus,

resulting in a very distracting video.

Keep an eye out for this so you don't get

an unpleasant surprise in post.

Number four, talent.

If your talent's no good, then your video

will probably follow suit.

Take Nicholas Cage for example.

- Y'know, A, B, C, D, E, F, G

- Peter. - H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P

- Peter! - Q, R, S, T, U, V,

W, X, Y, Z, huh?! - Oh, Peter.

- If the best editors in the world

couldn't fix this acting,

then the only solution is to fix it

before you start filming.

To keep an eye and ear out for mumbling.

- Today's video we're just going to

shout about some statistics.

- Glancing awkwardly back at the camera.

- You may need to, to know about, when getting started.

- Straight-faced.

- Google recommends that companies separate their vid--

- And fast talkers.

- Companies may produce a couple times a year.

- Just to name a few.

A good way to solve these issues is to be

gentle and patient when giving feedback to your talent,

getting them to give a big smile,

and taking a few deep breaths to slow themselves down.

Number five, planning.

A video is only as good as the time

you spend planning it.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong

if you don't plan accordingly,

including batteries dying, forgetting gear,

shots not making sense because you didn't think

them through, not having a location

because you didn't let anyone know,

believe me, the list goes on.

How to avoid these problems?

Well make sure that you write a script

and plan out a shot list, prep your gear

before you leave, and notify the relevant people

to get approval for your filming location.

Your future self will be thanking you

for the time you spent in preparation.

Hopefully we have helped you avoid

some major inconveniences when it comes

to filming your next video.
