My name's Alexis Moeller. I'm 12 years old. I'm going in 8th grade and my club is Lake 4-H.
I'm Zoe Stonebraker. I'm 13 years old and I'm going into 8th grade.
I'm part of the First Lego League for Cedar County.
All giving our opinion. They always support and say oh that's a good idea or if
someone's having a hard time with something that we're working on they'll
support them and say you can do this you've got it.
Well, they support me because they get like jobs for us and if making it hard
on a person that would be like getting one person for like a hard job but
instead of just letting one person to it they get like a couple of people or like
five to six people and then they spread the job out between all the people and
then it's much easier for them. They like to get us hard jobs but then spread it
out between people so it's not as complicated.
When my club is making decisions everyone no matter how old you are we
normally like get in an area where we can all see each other and we all
brainstorm and just say whatever ideas we can think of just to get them out
there and we all say ours and we kind of favor which one we choose and that one
we usually choose but if we can't choose, we'll compromise.
We have an agenda for each meeting because we have a meeting every month and on the agenda it's like what
we need to go through as a club and if we need to vote then they say all for
and raise your hand if you're for and then if you're against it you raise your hand.
And then if there's like an argument then the parents will get in
and like our leaders they usually don't talk that much unless it's like
kind of important meeting I guess.
Hi, I'm Justin Ball.
I am from Clay County and I'm the leader of the Lincoln Lions 4-H club, poultry committee member.
as well as a Clay County Endowment committee member.
I'm Linda Swanson from Clay County and currently a leader in the
Clay Raiders 4-H club.
Who empower the youth to engage them I feel is most important for them to
actually do and proceed with the projects, the running of the club the
decision-making. They need to actually be actively involved in that you know for
example myself,
my president of the club president and I create the agenda and he goes
ahead controls the meeting. I'm just back there for the leaders report you know he
actually does the agenda. He has this committee that you know they do the
treasurer's report, the secretary report. They hold the whole meeting we are just
there for guidance.
I feel that to empower our youth to be successful you have to have, let them
have ownership. So in our club we vote on projects. We let them research projects
and we also let them form committees and the method in which they want to
accomplish the project. And sometimes although you kind of know maybe it might
not work quite as you they help they hope but I think that you have to let
them have ownership. So, therefore even the successes are made
sometimes with failure of really doing a part of the project.
Probably the biggest things allow the, allow the youth the opportunity to lead.
Give them the guidance to start but then let them kind of create their own agenda to complete and
successfully complete it. Also apply different type of leadership roles such as you know
your traditional 4-H club has youth council consisting of president and vice
president, treasurer, secretary, etc but also what I found helpful is to involve some
committees or some chairs of those committees. This actually allows the
younger youth to become more involved with an actively involved with club and
partake in the proceedings of the club.
Some of the ways that I have found the clover kids to get empowered in our meeting
settings is just to give them the tools and the projects and let them explore with them.
Let them have that hands-on activity. They get excited, they work together.
It's interesting at that age to actually see them work together because
you have a lot of variances in age itself in the group and then abilities and
talents and working on that to finish the project together and it's empowering
to them to see those projects get completed and finished and excited to show their parents.
What has motivated me to continue, I look around and I have been 4-h leader for
over 30 years.
So as I look around and see young people going off to college, coming back into
our community and even creating their own businesses which I have seen and
being successful at I think there's nothing more that motivates a person than that.
The thing that inspires me probably the most about this age or ages
is just the fact that they love to learn. They like new things, they're
willing to try new things. They like to cook. They like to have the hands-on. They
like to go do community service projects. They're really even though they're not
able to do a lot of high-level they have a lot of energy to try new things and to develop those.
