Oberwerk Video Series Episode #3: Wooden Tripods - Duration: 1:44.
For the last eighteen years, we've been importing our wood tripods from China.
It's an important component of a large binocular like this that weighs 28 pounds.
We're having some issues with the quality of wood coming out of China and some other
things going on, so I decided that we're going to build these tripods here in Dayton, Ohio.
So, this is some raw walnut, this is maple, and this is poplar.
And this is the finished poplar, it's kind of a medium-brown finish.
This is the maple, this one's unfinished.
This is the walnut, ready to go.
So what we're doing is we engrave a scale into each of the legs so that when you adjust
the height all the way around, it's very easy to get them all exactly right.
These tripods have some improvements over the imported tripods.
For one thing, the leg angle is adjustable.
This is called the spreader, and we can adjust the length of each spreader arm.
The other thing, these tripods have a safety feature called Slip-Stop, which we patented.
It's a very simple idea, if the humidity drops and the wood shrinks a little bit- I'll simulate
that by just loosening the clamp- you can see it just started to slip.
It'll only go so far before it's tight again, because this is gradually widening.
I think it's an important safety feature for your expensive optics that this tripod is
basically crash-proof.

Impact Video Late for Class - Duration: 4:13.
- [Interviewer] Okay, what's your name and your grade?
- I'm Virginia and I'm a senior here at Big Sky.
- [Interviewer] Okay.
And Virginia, what's the impact
when students are late for class?
- The impact for students being late to class,
the teacher has to re-explain things
and it gets drawn out
and then the student themself gets affected
by not getting the full instructions
in the class.
- You missed class time and lessons
and when you come in,
you interrupt the class,
slowing down the lesson for everyone else.
- When students are late for class,
it's a disruption and a distraction for the whole class
because it gets everyone off task
while they're trying to learn,
when you just walk into the room.
- It interrupts the class when they come in
and they're behind in what's going on.
- I feel like it disrupts your learning
because when you're not there on time
and the teacher is teaching something,
you missed a certain part
of what you're learning.
And it also disrupts the class
when you walk in late.
And if you're always late,
it'd just be a problem
because you would be missing a lot
of information that the teacher gives you.
- The impact, I guess is just
that when students are late,
they usually miss a lot of stuff
and it really wastes a lot of teachers' time.
I really think that being on time
is very beneficial for people.
That's all I got to say.
- I guess you miss out on the lesson
and then you have to get caught up.
You have to find the time, during lunch
or after to school, to catch up.
- The impact of when students are late for class is
that they miss out on the time,
lessons that are missed
when the teacher's already discussed them.
- You can miss something that the teacher is starting
the lesson with.
And then you can just be behind the entire lesson
which can then lead to you being behind
for a couple days when it's the start of a big project.
- You miss the introduction to it
and then you're just kind of lost.
- You miss important material
and you make the teacher mad
and the whole class gets mad too.
- It definitely makes it a lot harder for us
to get started on time,
and it kind of sucks because then you're sitting around
for the first 15 minutes
and I'm like, "I'm ready to get started.
I don't know if everybody else is,
but we're just sitting around."
- I think it just puts you far behind
and it just makes harder to get caught up.
- You could be behind on your work
and it's disruptive to other students.
- They're unprepared and not ready for schoolwork.
- One impact is they don't know what's going on in class
or they could get stuck behind everybody
and they just kinda get harder to catch up.
- I think it messes up your grade
and gives you a bad reputation.
- They're unprepared
and their grades aren't as good.
- I guess teachers don't really like them anymore.
I guess your grade kinda gets screwed up a bit.
- It builds a stronger class
and if you make a habit of it,
you can be late to work,
late to a job interview.
- [Interviewer] Thanks.
- The impact is that they get in the mindset
that they're showing up late every day
and it's okay to,
but, it actually has a big impact
because they're missing a bunch of stuff
at the beginning of class they're not there for
and it slowly starts to affect how,
in the future, if you're late for a job,
it's fine, but it's not
because you're just
gonna get fired anyway.
