William Deutsch 17-18 Video Board Brief - Duration: 3:02.
Behind me is the construction of a three-story building -- soon to be a
one-of-a-kind school here in Prince William County. And actually in the
entire Commonwealth of Virginia. Hello, I'm Willie Deutsch, School Board
Representative for the Coles District. Our three current alternative education
sites, New Directions, New Dominion and the PACE East program will merge to become a
single school named Independence Nontraditional School. Students from
Kindergarten through Grade 12 will attend, and I'm excited about the range
of services and options for these students. Our non-traditional learners
will have courses not available to many of them before including music and arts,
foreign language, advanced placement classes. They will have Career and Technical
Education opportunities like internships that'll prepare students to enter the
workplace in areas such as plumbing electrical, and construction. The campus will
have digital learning labs, science and project-based learning classrooms, as
well as a multi-purpose stage, gym and full-service cafeteria. So this building
will be an example of the School Division's commitment to educating all
students. Many students have had challenging pasts or difficult life
circumstances and our non-traditional programs open the door to tailored and
accelerated education that meets the needs of all of our students. Every year
students graduate from New Directions as overcomers in Prince William County.
And, we believe in second chances and the importance of making sure every student
has a future after graduation. I'm excited to see what will happen as we
open this school and expand our non-traditional offerings under the
leadership of Bob Eichorn. independence is set to open in the fall of 2018.
The 2019 budget process is underway and residents should be on the lookout for
events and information related to the upcoming budget year. We have the second
largest school division in Virginia and every budget involves weighing what we
need and what we want for our students and how much money we have to spend.
Our Capital Improvements Plan will be reviewed as we look at what construction
projects need to happen. And, we will have budget work sessions as we
prepare a budget to present to the Board of Supervisors. As always, let us know
what you believe needs to be addressed in the budget. Are there ways we can save
money? Are there priorities that need to be
addressed? I greatly appreciate your thoughts.
I consider a privilege to be the Coles District School Board representative .I
greatly appreciate the hard work of our teachers and staff that work tirelessly
for approximately 90,000 students. I'll continue visiting our buildings as much
as possible and supporting our staff and our parents and students. It's one of the
most rewarding parts of serving you on the School Board. With the holiday season
near, I'm looking forward to attending our student concerts and performances
and hope to see you there. Have a great year and keep studying hard!
