We all know that there are specific things to look for when trying to determine the authenticity of a script
But how should we as pharmacists handle a questionable situation should it arise?
Let's take a look at one way to properly recognize and react to a fake situ prescription
I'm here to drop off a prescription.
Okay, do you have your license with you?
Yeah.
Okay, it will be just a couple minutes, we'll get that ready for you.
I think you might want to take a look at this.
So the first thing that is wrong with this is that it has refills on controlled substances
Another thing to look at is that it's from out of state this is from, California
It also has an unusually large quantity, and there's two controlled substances, which is also a red flag, so
I'll have to call the doctor on this one and find out what's going on
Hi dr. Smith the pharmacist, and I just got a prescription from a John Doe for
Norco and dilaudid and I just wanted to verify that prescription of you
Oh you never wrote that prescription
Okay, well, thank you have a nice day
Now that doctor confirmed that the prescription was fake, what do we do?
Well the most important thing in this situation is to not fill the prescription
I would also recommend before calling the police if possible if that's not your stores policy then just do whatever your store says
We're gonna call the police quietly so that John Doe doesn't upset with us and try to avoid an confrontation
This is the pharmacist on duty if someone just came in with a fake prescription
Yeah, I'll try to stall him until you guys come in all right, thank you
Here's a recap there are several red flags that had our classmates questioning the authenticity of this prescription
There are refills for c2 substances Norco and dilaudid which are never allowed there are also
Uncharacteristically large quantities for both of them and this prescription is from an out-of-state prescriber
After having called and verified that the prescription was indeed a fake they followed their stores protocol and contacted the police
This is an example of a way that we as future pharmacists may lend a hand in the fight against the opioid crisis
