Sisters and brothers, our rights are under attack.
Wealthy CEOs and corporations, teaming up with right-wing politicians,
are pumping millions of dollars into an orchestrated effort
to roll back the freedoms of proud public service workers like you.
They've now taken another step in their dishonest, scorched-earth campaign.
The Supreme Court just announced
it will hear a case called Janus versus AFSCME Council 31.
The Janus case threatens to overturn 40 years of precedent allowing us to stand together
in a strong union, to negotiate with the boss for a fair return on our work.
If we lose this case, the entire public sector will be right-to-work – coast to coast,
in all 50 states.
This is a political power grab, pure and simple.
It's about the corporate special interests making themselves stronger by making us weaker.
Why?
Because when working people have the freedom to speak up together,
we have the power in numbers to make life better for everyone.
When we have that freedom, we stop our enemies from rigging the rules of the economy
even more in their favor.
They don't just want to trip us up; they want to knock us out.
Don't take my word for it.
The head of one corporate interest group backing this case has said
they want to "defund and defang" us, delivering a mortal blow
to public service unions.
Over the last few years, we've made a bold commitment to organize, so we can strengthen
our communities and our union.
Now more than ever, we have to continue that work.
Talk to your co-workers one-on-one.
Get active and get involved.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Janus case early next year
and hand down a decision in the spring or early summer.
No matter what happens, we will remain a dynamic force.
But we need all hands on deck.
We need everyone to raise their voice, to be AFSCME Strong, to fight for our union and
for the freedom of all working people.
