ARTYOM DERVOED Artistic director of the festival Hi! It's Guitar Virtuosi festival number XII,
day three, and tonight
we had
Spanish and Latin American music
in the first half played by
Jose Antonio Escobar from Chile,
and in the second half, it was Antonio Rey, Mara Rey
and José Treviño from Spain.
Jose Antonio Escobar (Chile)
It was a first time we had a
guitarist from Chile
and it is such a great pleasure to see
all this different personalities
different schools,
different attitudes
to the music
to repertoire, to the guitar,
and this variety makes
every night special.
For me, it was very interesting to listen to Russian premiere
of the piece by Javier Contreras,
Chilean composer,
and it was very nice mix of
some South American
tunes and
modern rhythms.
It was first time
during out 12-years history
that we have this authentic flamenco
at the Guitar Virtuosi festival.
Of course, we had some
flamenco concerts, but tonight
it was very special and it was
pure flamenco magic
and I think, all the flamenco lovers
went crazy this time.
So, let's talk to the flamenco trio!
It will be
in Russian and Spanish, but
the guy behind the camera
promises to put the subtitles
pretty soon.
I would like to welcome you in Moscow
At our festival, during its 12-year history,
it's the first time we have such an authentic flamenco,
I am very glad that is was
really
remarkable performance
and
we all enjoyed it very much.
- Muchas gracias, thank you very much.
Can you please tell us about Spanish gypsies culture and tradition,
which actually flamenco is.
It is a very beautiful culture,
as you know, we are gypsies
on the part of our mom,
out father is just a 'regular' Spanish,
the whole big family lives in a house
all together,
as one heart,
everyone in the house are artists, they sing,
dance, play guitar,
and
this beautiful culture is dedicated to the music,
to the dance, to the singing,
this all makes the everyday life better,
so we think, this is a very beautiful culture.
We also think, it is very beautiful,
Today, I had a feeling, on the concert
there was such a lively Spanish landscapes
drawn by music in the Thaikovsky hall...
Antonio,
what are the commons and differences between
flamenco and classical guitar?
The common thing between these two cultures, classical and flamenco, is,
that we both create the music,
but this music is different!
Different sound, different harmonies,
different rhythms, that's it.
And of course
the technique - especially right hand.
All these rasgueado, alzapua, etc.
Also the guitar type is different,
the strings are closer to the frets, and you also play louder.
Did you ever try to play classical guitar?
Yes, and I like its clean sound very much.
But rasgueado does not work on classical guitar
because the result is not a flamenco,
no matter how hard you try, on classical guitar you get classical sound.
Rasgueado, bulerias - all this does not work.
But of course it is just perfect
for tremolos, for classical tunes.
Are there any differences in construction of classical and flamenco guitar?
Yes, the classical guitar has bigger body and
the space between strings and frets is more than on flamenco.
Usually, flamenco guitar is made using
cypress and spruce.
Are you attending live classical guitar performances?
Sometimes, sometimes I do,
but more often, I listen to
CDs and music videos.
It was a great pleasure for me to play in the same concert with
John Williams,
in Italia. He was playing in the first half,
I played the second. A classical guitar genie!
What are your first impressions about Moscow, did you have a chance to see anything here,
but the Tchaikovsky hall?
Unfortunately, we did not see it a lot,
we only came yesterday,
so we are about to run now to see the Red Square,
and probably we'll have some time tomorrow.
But we would be happy to come back here and have more time next time we are here,
but the Tchaikovsky hall is fantastic!
This building - it has
its own special magic,
we can feel it.
About the Red Square - my feeling is,
I like it much more in the night time,
so it is worth of
visiting it tonight.
And also tomorrow you'll have the time during the day,
And of course I hope
it is not the last time we meet in Moscow
so thank you very much for coming,
tomorrow we'll gonna have a great
gala concert featuring nearly all the
this year's festival's participants
as well as some other instrumentalists, so
tomorrow we'll have also very interesting concert.
Please tell Artyom,
that I would like, once, to play together with him,
and to make some classical+flamenco performance.
I will be glad to do this!
My last question is,
please advise something to our
Russian flamenco performers.
Flamenco is very popular here,
so we have lots of our own flamenco players,
not amateurs, I mean, but professionals,
so what is your advise for
your Russian colleagues?
The only advise
to the Russian flamenco players is, if they love flamenco
so they have to do it with all the love and soul they have,
they have to really love what they do.
And, please, invite some more flamenco performers to Russia.
Of course we hope, it is not our last visit to Russia,
but please bring here more real professionals,
who really really love what they do, this way
we will multiply the presence of the flamenco
in the world,
so, it will never end.
We do invite to our festival only the world's best performers,
and we are happy that
we had a chance to see your concert tonight. Muchas gracias!
All right guys,
It's gonna be the last night tomorrow,
the final Gala Concert where
all the participants is gonna
perform
solo and together with
other instruments. You'll have
Ksenia Bashmet on piano,
Gayk Kazazian on a violin,
and Alexander Ramm on cello.
And,
I have to practice as well, so -- see you!
