Video Games and the World S2E13 - Female Developers and Protagonists in Video Games - Duration: 28:11.
Hello gamers!
This is Gian, host of VGATW.
To all the female gamers and developers, Happy International Women's Day.
We all know what International Women's Day is all about.
It's to celebrate the social, political and economic achievements of women around the
world.
Last year in Season 1 of Video Games and the World we talked about women in video games.
From Damsels-in-Distress to strong female characters, debunking the claims of Anita
Sarkeesian and also demographics of female gamers.
In this episode, we shall talk about female developers and protagonists and also mention
why they are so good and how they do not pander to the types of people that harp about "Muh
privilege" all the time.
Let us begin, shall we?
There was a time where in most games of action and adventure the leads were mostly male.
Of course, there still lots of male leads.
But what about female leads?
Yes, we've had female leads, lots of them.
Starting with the very first one: Samus Aran.
Samus Aran was the very first female protagonist and she is the main character in the hit Metroid
franchise.
Her story is this; she was born in the Earth mining colony called K-2L to Rodney and Virginia
Aran.
One day, during a mining operation, the Space Pirates appeared and killed most of the residents
including her parents.
She was the only survivor and was found by the bird people called the Chozo.
She was infused with Chozo blood and became a super warrior and athlete.
She was trained in the ways of fighting and survival and became part of the Galactic Federation
Police and was mentored by Adam Malkovich.
She later left and became a bounty hunter and now she fights against her enemies, the
Space Pirates including the murderer of her parents, Ridley.
Samus Aran was based on Ellen Ripley as Metroid is based on the famous Alien franchise.
Samus being revealed as a woman was an iconic moment in gaming history which struck a blow
for gender equality.
And her popularity paved the way for various strong female characters such as Chun Li,
Sonya Blade, Kitana, Lara Croft, Regina, Aya Brea, Joanna Dark, BloodRayne, Kate Archer,
Ayame, Hana and many more.
Now, there have been strong females as sidekicks.
But are they all sidekicks?
Someone I won't mention seems to think so.
Short answer, no.
There have been tons of strong women who worked solo or were the leaders of the group.
Here's a list of game series where women have lead a party and also mentored not only female
characters but male ones as well.
Fire Emblem has it's share of strong women like Caeda, Vanessa, Tana and many more.
But are there female leaders of a unit and protagonists?
Yes there are.
And here are the examples: In Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword for the Game
Boy Advance we are introduced to Lyndis, or simply Lyn.
Lyn is from the plains of Sacae and goes on a journey to meet her grandfather, who is
a noble lord named Hausen.
Not only would she avenge her tribe against the bandits, but she would also meet two knights,
Sain and Kent.
They were both sent to find her and bring her before her grandfather, although they
were ordered by a power hungry noble called Lundgren to kill her.
They decided to bring her before her grandfather and ignored Lundgren's orders.
Lyn then leads a group not only fightning bandits, but also against the forces of the
power hungry Lundgren.
During this journey, she realizes that her mother was from Caelin and her father a nomad
from Sacae and they fell in love against Hausen's wishes.
But then Hausen realized he cannot interfere in his daughter's happiness because everyone
deserves to be happy.
In the next part of the story she joins with Eliwood and Hector to fight against the evil
forces of Nergal, who seeks to release the dragons and wreak havoc upon Elibe.
Another interesting thing about Blazing Sword is that gamers can decide whether the strategist
is a male or a female.
Some of the female villains also lead their own group such as Limstella, Sonia and there's
also Ursula of the Four Fangs, which is the elite group of the Black Fang criminals in
the game.
In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Eirika is also a leader and in her own story before
her brother Ephraim's story.
Eirika is the princess of the kingdom of Renais.
When she escapes, she can hold on her own and even becomes leader of a group with her
second-in-command, Seth.
Selina is a Grado general, although an antagonist, she seems to be questioning herself and the
kingdom, but she dies bravely in combat.
L'Arachel is a troubadour that leads her own small group and joins with Eirika as well.
In Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, there's Micaiah.
She is the de facto leader of the Dawn Brigade, which seeks to free the kingdom of Daein from
the Begnion Occupational Army, which rules the kingdom with an iron fist.
Before her role as leader, she was a fortune teller and later after the events of Path
of Radiance, she led the Dawn Brigade and people saw her as a symbol of hope due to
her powers.
She succeeds in liberating Daein, but it's only the beginning of her troubles due to
the Blood Pact that Pelleas unknowingly signed during peace talks.
At the end of the game, she becomes the queen of Daein.
In Part II of Radiant Dawn, Elincia is the queen of Crimea.
However, many people seek to overthrow her such as the rebel leader Duke Ludveck of Felirae.
But she reminds him that strength alone does not make a great leader but also conviction
and compassion.
And also, revenge against Daein will not bring those who died back, it'll become a lot worse.
Lucia can lead a small unit to spy on Ludveck and learn of his plotting to overthrow the
noble ruler of Crimea.
Also noted in terms of female leadership are Apostle Sanaki from Begnion, Sigrun leads
a unit of Pegasus Knights along her second-in-command Tanith.
And in the series, Pegasus Knights are universally female.
But in Fates, Shigure is the first male Pegasus Knight.
Lucina in Awakening can be the main protagonist instead of Chrom depending on the player's
choice as well.
In Fates players can decide if their avatar is a female as well.
However, the main protagonist of the game is Azura.
The Perfect Dark games are very memorable, and many gamers including myself wish to see
a reboot or a new game.
Although not as popular as GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64, this game is a memorable rare
gem.
In this game series, Joanna Dark is the main protagonist.
She is a very skilled agent and proficient fighter who embarks on many missions fighting
terrorist organizations and the hostile alien race called the Skedar.
According to lore, her father Jack Dark taught her how to fight when she was seven years
of age and also how to operate firearms.
She briefly attended an American school in Beijing, China, but was expelled after hospitalizing
another student following a bullying incident.
As a result she was home schooled by her father, including some online and remote teaching,
and tutoring by AI lecturers.
Her innate curiosity filled in most of the gaps.
In Perfect Dark Zero, prequel to the original game, Joanna assisted her father on her first
field op, but things don't go so well and she has to rescue her father in which she
succeeds.
She is later rescued by Jonathan Steinberg who becomes her sidekick in the second game
and later becomes employed by the Carrington Institute.
In the first game, she rescues an AI called Dr. Carroll from Datadyne and later her boss
Daniel Carrington.
She would later be rescuing the President of the United States, a Maian alien named
Elvis and even defeat the Skedar.
Many old school gamers would love to see Joanna Dark return for a new game or a reboot.
But only time will tell gamers.
Dino Crisis is like a mixture between Resident Evil and Jurassic Park, yet it is a very loved
survival horror game.
The main protagonist in the first two games is Regina.
Regina is part of a paramilitary group that has a mission to rescue Dr. Kirk. on Ibis
Island.
Kirk, a leading energy researcher believed to have died tragically in an accident some
years prior, had been identified by Tom as the facility's lead researcher and supervisor,
though it appeared that the main research project at the facility was not in weapons
development.
Upon arrival on the island in search for her CO, she is ambushed by a dinosaur and she
investigates further.
She discovers that the research facility has been attacked by dinosaurs and Dr. Kirk is
the culprit due to an experiment known as the Third Energy gone wrong.
A rift in space was created and a pocket of the island from their time was exchanged with
the same from the past, bringing dinosaurs back into their time.
In the second game, due to the use of Third Energy, time is being altered and the dinosaurs
are becoming rampant.
Regina must leap into action once again and save the world.
Cynical, sarcastic and sardonic, Regina treated missions and people in a detached, cool manner.
Unfazed by gore or horror, she consistently proved herself an effective agent.
Despite her unattached mannerisms, Regina cared for her team and the people they encountered,
worrying about wayward agents and comforting dying men in their last moments.
Regina seems to have a habit of interjecting humor into serious situations, such as when
Gail finds blood and believes there was fighting and Regina jokes, "I still say you could have
done this."
The Resident Evil series has it's strong women such as Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Ada
Wong, Sherry Birkin, Helena Harper and Sheva Alomar.
Not to forget all the women from the Outbreak games.
In Resident Evil 3, Jill fights to escape the doomed Raccoon City and joins forces with
Carlos Oliveira of the UBCS mercenary force.
When Carlos seems to lose hope, Jill smacks some sense into him to not give up.
Claire Redfield is more of a main protagonist in Code Veronica X than Chris himself.
Steve joins with Claire to escape from Rockfort Island.
Some would say he is a sidekick, but they work together as a team to escape.
I would not call Sheva Alomar or Helena Harper sidekicks, but mutual partners with Chris
and Leon.
Sherry can also be the lead depending on the player's choice.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City has a female lead and the leader of her own squad.
Her name is Karena LesProux, also known as Lupo (which is Italian for Wolf).
Lupo leads the Wolfpack Delta Squad and her mission is to destroy any incriminating evidence
against Umbrella due to the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City.
She also has to kill any survivors and witnesses.
She can have a choice to kill Leon and Claire, or let them escape.
She eventually married, but her husband proved to be a violent man, although she tolerated
his abusive nature for the sake of their children by relying on her training and discipline
as a former soldier.
However, she ultimately killed her spouse with her bare hands when he began abusing
one of their children.
And that's instant karma because, I hate domestic violence.
The
very first female protagonist in the series is Terra from Final Fantasy VI.
She was born half-human and half-esper and was taken by the Gestahlian Empire, which
seek to revive the destructive force called magic, which destroyed the world a millennia
ago due to the War of the Magi.
She later breaks free from her collectivist past and joins with the group to fight against
Gestahl and Kefka.
She leads her group and Celes can do so as well.
In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna is more of a leader of the Gullwings than Brother.
Why some would say that Yuna leads the group?
Because she is more qualified to lead a group due to her calmness, her voice of reason and
does not back down from a fight.
Her two companions are Rikku and Paine.
They can both advise her and comfort her whenever there are tight situations.
The good memories and her friends are what keep her going.
And she is seeking for her long lost love, Tidus.
Final Fantasy XII has Princess Ashe, who leads a resistance army against the Archadian Occupation.
She with Vaan, Basch, Penelo, Balthier and Fran journey around Ivalice to find a way
to defeat Vayne.
If Vaan interferes in a conversation she would tell him to shut it.
Final Fantasy XIII has Lightning who leads the group on a journey to overthrow the Sanctum.
At first she is cold and distant, but she proves to be a caring person and even mentors
Hope Estheim in toughening himself up.
Thanks to Lightning, Hope learns that being tough is not just about throwing a punch and
lifting heavy stuff, but also think wisely.
In Final Fantasy Tactics, although an enemy at first and not a protagonist, Meliadoul
leads a force in Bervenia against Ramza to avenge her brother.
It is shown that her unit consists only of women.
Since 1998, Silent Hill has been one of the most iconic horror games ever made and instead
of a zombie biohazard type of game, this one is more about the supernatural and various
religious references.
The game has it's own strong females like Cybill Bennett, Anne Marie Cunningham and
many more.
In Silent Hill 3, the main protagonist is Heather Mason, adopted daughter of the protagonist
of the first game, Harry.
Heather is a seemingly normal and carefree girl who loves to shop.
She has a few rough edges and tends to be blunt with others.
One trait of Heather is that she is moody and loses her temper quite easily at things
that frustrate her, which are considered normal traits for a teenager.
Heather has a sharp tongue and can be very snarky, sarcastic and humorous such as her
"joke" to Douglas in the normal ending.
Heather has a great love for her father, as he raised her on his own.
She jumps to Harry's defense when Vincent criticizes him.
When Harry dies, she is completely distraught.
After Harry's death, there is a very noticeable change in Heather's personality.
She gradually becomes reflective and somber.
If Heather examines a movie poster in her room, she comments, "I always liked that line,
but now it just seems stupid," regarding staying hopeful in despair.
According to the character's voice actress: I liked the character Heather.
She is sort of a bad-ass and a bit of a tomboy.
Although she was very young, she was quite fearless and strong.
Heather was really interesting and a great character to play.
—Heather Morris Aya Brea is a bit of a complex character.
For the most part, she is portrayed as a strong-willed, intelligent and honest heroine.
Although quiet on the surface, she can be very stubborn and unyielding, occasionally
entering arguments with Daniel because of her stubborn nature.
Aya is meek and modest in nature and does not boast about being a hero or possessing
superhuman powers.
While Aya is mature where it counts, she also tends to be pretty sarcastic, cold, and brooding,
with a sardonic sense of humor.
She sometimes cracks silly jokes, likely to cope with her awful predicaments.
It doesn't help that Aya has a bad habit of not being able to take people seriously sometimes,
particularly when they express any sort of interest in her; she tends to brush them off.
Sometimes it's easier for her to pretend that people are just being insincere most of the
time.
When Kyle says she has a pretty smile, her reaction is "W-What?
...Hey!" which says a lot about her.
In the first game, she only went with a "date" with someone simply because he kept pestering
her about it - she only chose the opera as a setting.
Aya can be sensitive, compassionate, kind, and she is fairly forgiving.
She can gentle and nurturing, almost maternal — especially with children.
She does like kids, regardless of the fact that she's never had any herself and she treats
Eve Brea in a caring and almost motherly manner, although Aya prefers to thinks of her more
as a sister than a daughter.
She approaches with a welcoming nature to most people.
Eve and Kyle are essentially her "family".
Aya is shown to have very humanitarian and altruistic attributes.
Aya couldn't care less about things like race, class, and all the other things humans divide
themselves with when the extinction of all life is at stake.
There
are various other female leads that are very memorable such as Max Caulfield for her friendly
and calm nature and how she uses her time travelling skills for good.
But messing with time can have severe consequences.
Cassie Cage has a very brash and cocky attitude like her father.
But she is shown to care about her teammates and her parents.
She would not let Shinnok kill her father and she defeats his corrupted form at the
end of Mortal Kombat X. Chloe Price is dealing with tough issues such
as not getting along with her stepdad, the loss of her father, adapting without the presence
of her friend Max and even falling for Rachel Amber.
Ayame of Tenchu changes from a laid-back girl into a more mature, accepting woman.
Princess Zelda in Ocarina of Time can mentor Link as Sheik.
And leads a band of pirates in The Wind Waker as Tetra.
And it is also known that in MMORPG and other RPG games players can decide if their avatar
is a male or a female.
Or in games like the Pokemon series since Pokemon Crystal, players can select the trainer
to be female.
Although not a protagonist, in the first Metal Gear Solid video game, Meryl Silverburgh was
a sidekick.
But in Guns of the Patriots, she leads a small unit called Rat Patrol 01, and ends up marrying
one of her teammates, Johnny.
And from Resident Evil Zero there is Rebecca Chambers, a rookie police officer who teams
up and works together with Billy Coen.
The more she learns about him, the more she believes in his innocence and we see that
she has a strong sense of justice.
Is game developing a mans world only?
Of course not!
There have been and there are female game developers that are influential in the gaming
industry in the most positive way, won various awards and made best-selling award winning
video games.
Others have said how games can make a positive influence in ones life.
These are the most well known female game developers that created such fantastic games.
Dona Bailey is the first female game designer.
Along with Ed Logg in 1981, created the arcade video game Centipede.
As a young programmer Bailey was hired by General Motors and trained in assembly language
programming.
She worked there for two years on displays, and microprocessor-based cruise control systems.
She became interested in Space Invaders and the world of arcade games, another application
of the work she was doing at GM.
She found out that Atari was using the same microprocessor in its games.
In 1980, Bailey joined Atari's coin-op division, where she was the only woman.
In an interview Bailey recalled that Atari had a notebook of possible game ideas at the
time.
Of the 30 or so entries the only one without "lasering or frying things" was a short description
of a bug winding down the screen.
"It didn't seem bad to shoot a bug".
Bailey left Atari in 1982 and went to work at Videa (later renamed Sente Technologies),
founded by three former Atari employees.
In 2007, she was the keynote speaker at the Women in Games International Conference.
Bailey holds M.Ed. and M.A. degrees and taught as a faculty member in the department of Rhetoric
and Writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock until her retirement.
Carol Shaw is one of the very first female video game developers of the video game industry.
While working at Atari, Inc. in 1978, Shaw designed the unreleased Polo game and designed
3-D Tic-Tac-Toe the same year, both for the Atari 2600.
Shaw's official job title at Atari was Microprocessor Software Engineer.
Later she joined Activision, where she programmed her best-known game, River Raid.
According to the River Raid manual, she is also a "scholar in the field of Computer
Science."
Brenda Romero worked in the industry in 1981.
She climbed the ranks to become lead designer on the influential and award-winning RPG Wizardry,
and went on to work for Atari on the Dungeons and Dragons series.
She currently serves as the Program Director for the Masters of Science in Games & Playable
Media program at UC Santa Cruz and has developed a series of non-digital games, as well as
being active in the study of sex in video games and in historical game archiving.
Kiki Wolfkill is the current executive producer of the Halo series of games at Microsoft.
She also served as an art director for Microsoft projects including Project Gotham Racing,
Mass Effect, Gears of War, and Forza Motorsport.
It has been her task to spearhead the 343i team not only on Halo 4 and beyond but also
to keep track of the spin-off comics, novels, and other material that make up the franchise.
Wolfkill's next work will presumably be the sequel to Halo 4.
Amy Hennig is one of the most loved and appreciated video game developers due to creating these
best-selling games such as Uncharted and also contributed to the Jak and Daxter series of
games.
Recently she was planning a Star Wars video game.
Unfortunately the project didn't go into production, which EA put it's nail in the coffin with
Star Wars.
Jane McGonigal is an author of the book "Reality is Broken".
She is also well known for advocating the use of mobile and digital technology to channel
positive attitudes and collaboration in a real world context.
Aya Kyogoku is known for games such as Animal Crossing, Four Swords Adventure, Twilight
Princess and the Wizardry title, Tale of the Forsaken Land.
Corinne Yu is also known for games such as Borderlands and was hired by Microsoft's 343
Industries division as Halo 4's lighting designer and facial animator.
She now works for Naughty Dog as a graphic programmer.
Jennell Jaquays is well known for her work with games like Dungeons and Dragons scenarios
after starting out as the editor of a fanzine, then moved to the video gaming world in the
1980s, where she designed conversions of many popular games such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong
for the ColecoVision home arcade console.
She has also worked for Electronic Arts and other large game companies throughout the
1990s and 2000s, including doing art design for Halo Wars and Age of Empires III.
More recently, she was the lead level designer for the World of Darkness MMO and is a founding
member of Olde Skuul, a game development studio formed by four female veterans of the video
game and tabletop game industries.
Rhianna Pratchett worked with Heavenly Sword and was a main writer and co-story creator
for Mirror's Edge and the lead writer for the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider.
She also wrote the script for Overlord for Triumph Studios and penned comic book tie-ins
for Tomb Raider and Mirror's Edge, as well as writing background dialogue for BioShock
Infinite and Prince of Persia.
There are even several female developers who did an amazing job with various games like
The Sims and many more such as: Lucy Bradshaw, Kellie Santiago, Anna Anthropy, Helena Santos,
Elizabeth Sampat, Kim Swift, Aurelie Debant, Jade Raymond, Anna Kipnis and many more.
CONCLUSION And finally in conclusion, I must say that
if you think that women are not represented enough in gaming, here's my advice: Pick up
a controller, turn on your console and play.
Also, when it comes to female characters, I don't focus solely on their bodies but on
how they are developed and what I like and don't like about them.
Female game developers have done awesome jobs with producing, writing, desigining and many
more.
Game design and development is for everyone.
Ask any gamer any real gamer!
It don't matter whether you're male or female or what game console you're playing.
Gaming is gaming!
Until next time gamers!
