How to make the Star Flower crochet motif (US crochet terminology)
From www.mezzacraft.com
Start with a slip knot loop on the hook.
Chain 6
Join with a slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring
Row 1: Chain 3 (counts as 1hdc & ch1 space)
(Into the ring - hdc, ch1) 7 times
8 hdc & 8 ch1 spaces
Slip stitch in 2nd chain of beginning chain 3
Round 2: chain 10 (counts as 1hdc & ch8)
(sk 1ch, hdc in next st; ch6; sk 1ch, hdc in next st; ch8) 3 times
4 x chain 8 spaces & 3 x chain 6 spaces
Make final petal loop - ch2, tr into 2nd ch of beg ch10
It may not count as a double up. I'll explain why on the way back, and then we're going to double crochet
And we're going to half double
Then we're going to chain one
We're going to slip stitch
Into that chain two space from the foot chain ten from the previous round
Now going to fill in one of the bigger petals with a single crochet
half-double
Two doubles
Chain 1 treble chain 4
Yeah, it's getting snagged on something
Chain chain one two doubles
Half double single
And then a slip stitch into
The next half double so if you're not familiar
Working with half doubles you might think that
This stitch here is the top of the half double, but that's actually the first chain
Of this chain six section so the stitch that relates to the post of the half double is actually this
Funny little one on the side there this slip stitch into there, and now we're going to
fill in a short petal with a chain
half double
double chain two double
Half double
chain one
slip stitch into
the top of the half double from the previous round
And now we're going to fill in a big petal again single crochet into the chain space
half double
two doubles
Chain one treble chain four
Trouble
Chain one
Two doubles
Half-double
Single
Slip stitch into next half-double next short petal chain one half
Double
Double chain two double
Half double chain one
Slip stitch long petal
Single crochet half-double
Two doubles chain 1
Treble
Chain 4 treble
Chain 1 double
Double half double single
Slip stitch in the top of the
Half double
and the previous round
Get some yard free yard
Now I'm gonna make a short petal chain one single and not a single. That's a lie
Half double double
Chain two double
Half chain one
Slip stitch single crochet half-double
Double chain one triple chain 4 treble
Chain 1 2 doubles half double single
Slip stitch
So we're going to finish off this partial petal let me start at the beginning, so we're going to chain 1
We're going to
Single crochet, they're not going to single crochet. They're actually going to do a
Half double I need to turn my phone off because someone is being really annoying
Texting me constantly go away
And
then originally I said that this chain file if could count as a
Double crochet and a chain two space now what I found is that if I now just slip stitch into the third chain
To finish off the round it actually kind of distorts that petal and it ended up looking much better
if I just did another double and
then
slip stitched into that
chain three
It makes it look a lot neater, so
We're now going to do you should have you should have now four
four short petals and
four bigger petals
We're now going to do the final round so I'm going to change one chain one
Single crochet and
Make a picot chain 3 picot one two three I
Tend to go
From the back of the stitch through to the front and then slip stitch
There's lots of different ways to do a picot, that's just
The way I do it for this particular pattern, so you can use your preferred method of doing a picot that will be fine chain
eight one two
three
Six seven eight and then
Into the second
chain so you're not going into the chain space in this instance you're actually going into the chain just for these this first motif because
otherwise
The we're going to make a loop now. She's part of that where the flowers join when you join them all together I
Find that
for the the first motif unless you anchor down this these points they tend to slide around a bit and
spoil the shape of
for how they joined together
so single crochet into the second chain chain six one two three four five six and
Then single crochet
into the next empty chain
Which is the whole?
And then chain eight one two three four five six seven eight
Single crochet into the chain two space of the short petal and make another picot chain
Eight
Again single crochet into the second chain of the chain 4 space
Chain six
Single crochet into the next empty chain
Mess that up chain eight
Single crochet into the chain two space of the small petal make a chain three picot chain
eight
Single crochet into the second chain the chain four chain six one
And then single crochet into the next chain chain
Eight
Single crochet in chain two space of the small petal chain three picot chain
Eight
Next chain pool space single crochet in the second chain
Chain six one two three four five six
Hole crochet into the next chain
And now we're back to our very first
Short petal, and we're just going to slip stitch
Into the base of that picot and
Then it's finished
If I had a pair of scissors I would cut that I
Don't typically
Everything but 3ds hair clips staples one word sweets rulers
No scissors
I
Tend to cut quite a short tail
just because
When you're using something expensive, yarn like this light silk you
Can't really be wasting
yards of it on tiles so
Obviously this hasn't been blocked yet, so it looks a bit scraggy
but um
Once it's blocked
It's really quite pretty
