Hello, I'm Donna Rodriguez, director of the Testing Center at Victoria College.
I'm so pleased you've chosen to begin your higher education journey here at Victoria
College.
This brief video will cover the importance of the TSI assessment, where to find sample
questions to prepare to take the TSI assessment, Developmental Course options after receiving
your scores, and institutional and community resources.
TSI is an acronym for Texas Success Initiative.
It's a statewide tool designed to assess a student's skills in Math, Reading, and Writing.
The TSI is a placement test designed to place you in the most appropriate college courses
for your specific needs, so it is important to take your time and do your best.
Our core value at Victoria College is student success, and here, at the Victoria College
Testing Center, we are committed to making your testing experience as stress free as
possible.
Hi, I'm Amber Baker, Testing Specialist for the Testing Center at Victoria College.
I'm here to provide you with some important details concerning the TSI.
The assessment is a computerized test containing three sections: a Math section, a Reading
section, and a Writing section.
Each section has multiple choice questions, including the writing section, which is comprised
of multiple choice questions as well as an essay.
You must answer each question in the multiple choice section to continue testing.
You cannot go back to change your answers.
This test is adaptive -- meaning your next question is dependent on how you answer the
previous question.
Answering harder questions correctly will earn you more points toward your final score
on the TSI assessment.
Do not rush through it.
You have plenty of time to take this assessment.
The assessment is untimed but you should allow at least five hours to complete the entire
assessment.
Remember, though you cannot pass or fail this exam, your semester course placement is determined
by the scores you receive on the TSI assessment, so it's important you do your best!
If you feel your scores do not represent your best work, you can always take it again at
any of our VC locations: on the Main Campus and our Gonzales Center.
You are more likely to be successful in your classes when placed in the correct level of
course work.
Depending on your scores you will either be placed in College Level courses, Developmental
Education courses, or Adult Basic Education courses.
Not taking time to prepare to take the TSI assessment can result in being placed at a
lower level course.
Being placed in a lower level course will result in more required courses – costing
you more time and money.
You may have to spend an additional one or two semesters in developmental education courses
that cost approximately $240 per course.
This is why it is very important you do your best on the TSI assessment.
Not all students are required to take the TSI assessment.
Please see the Advising and Counseling page on Victoria College's website to determine
if you are exempt from taking the TSI assessment.
Developmental education courses are designed to help students progress to college level
courses in the areas of math, reading, and writing.
Victoria College offers course-pairing, non-course based, and bridge options for developmental
education, as well as financial aid, tutoring services, veteran's affairs, and supplemental
instruction.
Please refer to the Student Resources page on Victoria College's website for more information.

This is where you will see sample questions for each of the three sections.
You will not be allowed to take the TSI assessment without completing this Pre-Assessment Activity.
The first question on the TSI assessment will be: Were you given information and/or an activity
to help you understand all of the following: (1) importance of this assessment, (2) sample
questions, (3) course options, and (4) resources for students?
Answer "Yes" for this question.
If you answer No, you will not be allowed to take the TSI Assessment.
You will receive your scores immediately after completing all three sections of the TSI assessment.
Take your scores to a Victoria College advisor.
An advisor will help you enroll in the appropriate courses based your TSI assessment scores.
All information from this video can be found at the end of this Pre-Assessment Activity.
Good luck!
